An interesting contrast to Davrath's version - not as mystical but also superb. Also, I think that several super-great sopranos don't sing this as well as Moffo or Davrath. Even the great Victoria de los Angeles.
Thank you for sharing. Always a delight to hear her luscious voice - like de los Angeles bangs in the middle of the note, nothing adjacent and proper vowel sounds right at the top not just, 'aw, aw', loved Mattila too but personally Moffo's sexy, cheeky pusscat just tips it for me.
I do like this version, the best among those by opera singers. My favorite though is by Natanya Davrath, also posted here on YouTube. What do you think?
This recording won a Grand Prix du Disque award. Say what you will about Moffo, she was really good about sharing billing with her conductors. This was one of two albums she recorded where photos of both her and the conductor appeared on the cover.
Quond onorèn o lo fièïro, ié! Quond onorèn o lo fièïro, ô! Li onorèn tuoï dous, l'Antouèno! Li onorèn tuoï dous. Croumporèn uno baquetto, ié! Croumporèn uno baquetto, ô! La croumporèn touï dous, l'Antouèno! La croumporèn touï dous. La baquetto séro méouno, ié! La baquetto séro méouno, ô! Lèi cornoï sèroun pèr bous, l'Antouèno! Lèi cornoï sèroun pèr bous!
I've hear the other versions of these songs on youtube and they all sound so vulgar in comparison to this one. I know to each his own but I am curious as to why no one seems to come even close to singing it as well as Moffo.
Agree that this is the best version of Chant d'Auvergne on YouTube. However in term of what's out there, Frederica Von Stade's rendering of Bailerò slightly edges that of Anna Moffo. IMPO
moffo's voice is perfect for this piece. She knows exactly how to handle it. She obviously knows that it's not always about a big sound as much as conveying the spirit of the piece. Beautiful
@village13guy absolutely..it's about whether a piece suits a voice type. Also, there's what mood the listener's in etc The endless "mine's better than yours" on here can take focus away from the wonderful musicians.
Even tho u may not have been speaking to me, I think I was wrong in calling others' versions vulgar. When I hear Moffo singing these two songs though, my heart just floods and I think of how happy I am to be alive. It's somehow a personal thing. I am not even a fan of hers but she does something to me here that neither a conductor, Canteloube nor another soprano can do.
hey she's my fave by a very long way..I don t know why I wrote that..I think I did a typical You Tube thing, got annoyed with comments from another thing, listened to this, loved it, typed the old comment in my head or something. love this and don't know why they don t even mention her name at college, such a pity. Hers is such a rich tone but not heavy.
Amazing. THIS is singing . . . listen to that glorious voice trumpeting effortlessly over the orchestral textures at the conclusion of "L'Antouneno." She communicates the dreamy, almost misty nature of "Bailero" so well. Moffo's singing and Stokie's orchestra paint such a stunning sound portrait that you know exactly what this beautiful region looks like, even if you've never seen it.
LOL i meant i love how her breaths are seamless she is seems to sing the whole song in one breath she has the supernatural quality that reaches the soul
che bella voce...listen to her Rachmaninov Vocalise, too.

this type of music is played on GOAT SKINS in the Auvergne part of france.
Yeah - goat skins!
in southern ireland, they playa goatskin type of drum!!
in the jewish church, they read from manuals PRINTED ON GOATSKINS!!!
Good God, how do VEGETARIANS feel about all this? What do THEY use when they want to play this type of music. I HOPE THEY REJECT IT.
And the worshippers in the Synagogue, too.
PLEASE.

This woman is fast becoming my favourite singer on Youtube. And to think I have not heard many recordings by her before...!
Stokowski is not bad either.
I once had to play the piano arrangement of this in a concert. Phew!

btw does anybody know the story behind "Bailero"?, what it's saying?

see Karita Mattila's "Bailero" on youtube. It has lyrics.

It's about two lovers calling to each other across an impassable river. I love this song, and have used it in choreography for my ballet students.
