I shared a flat with two girls, but at least we all had our seperate rooms, so we got around the surprise sex-scenario, and the debates on principles of tidiness/iness ('cept the bathroom, of course. I always forgot to clean that)
My freshman year roommate was the most disgusting slob that I've ever known. It was so bad that my room was deemed uninhabitable by my friends. I slept there, sometimes, nothing more.
My first roommate was a slob/non headphone user, but not a sexiler. Nope, she just decided I was asleep so she'd have sex about 5 feet away from me. Then I moved in with a neat freak/bible thumper. I'm so ready for this year to be done.
My first roommate was by far the best. We were friends from high school, but not like best friends. We knew enough about each other to be comfortable, and were able to make a plan for who brought what, but we still had a lot to talk about over dinner. We were equally neat/not-so-neat, We both had other friends on campus, and we worried about each other equal amounts and weren't bugged with the "when will you be back?" texts. Very important when living in Detroit at 18 so you know when to worry.
My first roommate wouldn't talk to me, like ever, and I was a transfer so hello awkward. And she would blast Daughtry on her laptop and then leave the room for at least an hour at a time. And heaven forbid i shut off her sound on her laptop. And then she never locked the door and her friends would take her things. Guess who got blamed for that, and also guess who got blamed (...and reported to the RA for that and not closing the window in the dead of winter). Don't be that roommate, just don't.
Do all Americans live in dorms where they don't get their own rooms when they go to college? I'd have thought the US large enough that you don't have to leave home to further tertiary education and even when you do, I'd baulk at being a young adult and having to share my room with another. I had to move to a capital city for tertiary education in Australia but never shared a room with anyone, just a house. Even that was like the movie he died with a falafel in his hand.
@Dnomyarification it depends on what kind of college/university you go to...some have single rooms, some have double, then there are also quad style (4 rooms with a living room). I'm sure there are variations to those as well, but those are the ones I've seen most commonly. I, for example, share a relatively small room with another girl. She's cool, we're friends. It gets a little claustrophobic sometimes, but you get used to it after awhile.
I've got a slob and a really bad one too. I mean, seriously, who leaves dirty dishes in the sink when we're leaving for WINTER BREAK? Come on! You can totally leave them for a couple of days when you're currently living there, but when you're leaving for a long break: Don't. One: we could all get fined for it. Two: Even if we don't, do you know how much that will stink when we come back? Why is it so hard for people to think about the others they live with? >.<
i had to drink water out of a champagne glass the other day because there were no regualt glasses left. the "private school" jokes came flooding in... :/
I was in college. My dorm mate used to borrow and play my guitar a lot. Which, isn't necessarily a problem. Except, he often borrowed and played my guitar at 4am. 4 FUCKING AM! I was forced to cut the strings on my own guitar.
What kind of roommate are you, Hayley? I could see you being the internet shut in type who makes references that people don't always understand but they end up liking you anyway. ;)
I wash and fold my roommate's clothes... among that, making his bed, vacuuming, cleaning everything, and organizing his stuff, he doesn't seem to mind...
These videos are so accurate. I am the slob, but I always kept the shared areas clean. I had the neat freak, "Who moved the cinnamon?!" I also still have nightmares of my first roommate for various reasons, but the biggest one that haunts me. The Nelly and Kelly song that was on repeat, no headphones, even when he wasn't in the room. I turned it off one time when he was gone for a few hours and he came back and asked me why I messed with his speakers >.>; ON REPEAT!
My suite has a passive-aggressive girl...you know, the kind who leaves bitchy notes all over the place (on the trash can, sink, inside of the suite door, OUTSIDE of the suite door) and never says a word to you or your friends, just gives you dirty looks when she walks by.
My friend is my roommate, and she just got a boyfriend. So. At least my friends (who also live in my suite) have a triple with an extra bed. I sleep in it almost as much as my own...*le sigh*
Ah, the good old "what are headphones?" roommate. What fun that semester was. I was the "never leave the room" roommate, which didn't seem to be a bad thing until I was paired with another "never leave the room" roommate.
My first roommate would have his girlfriend stay over all the time. And they would wait until I was asleep to do it. Only she was loud and I'd wake up. Awkward. Once, while drunk, they invited me to join them. I slept on the couch.
Hahaha oh god. Being Canadian, there's a chance I might never move into a dorm, although I REALLY hope I do. The experiences sound pretty...interesting. xD
Also, you don't want to be the roommate who habituallty goes hooverhead on the last slice of pozza when they didn't even throw in for the pie. People really hate that!
I live in an apartment but my roommate is weird. I came home from class one day to her spraying Pledge furniture polish in her hair. When I asked her why she was doing that she said "Well my hair smelled bad and it says 'conditioner' on the can so I thought I could use it for my hair..."She also has this habit of leaving the leftovers to whatever she makes in the pots and putting the pots back into the cabinet where we keep them...yeah... -_- luckily I can just lock myself in my room all day
I went into college knowing I could NOT handle co-existing with someone I had never met before that semester. I'm too much of a loner, need my quiet time, stay up late watching Dr. Quinn, sewing my Halloween costume until 3 a.m. kind of person. Thankfully my ACT score was high enough to get me a free doom room...so all my folks had to pay was the $70ish per semester to get me a private room.
whenever i see that you've got a new video out the first thing i do is head for the kitchen and grab myself a champagne flute full of water. <3 don't stop being so awesome :)
@rachinapotter Lol really you don't have too much to worry about, as we Brits find accents and things interesting too (even though we come accross as a very racist, grumpy country.) As long as you're polite, wear warm clothes (REALLY warm when you first arrive,) and are willing to immerse yourself in the culture, you'll be fine. Oh, and DON'T enforce any stereotypes you may have heard about Brits. We often make fun of our own country, but others probably won't take it too well if you join in.
I live with two other girls, and while one of them and I arrived about a week before classes, the other girl didn't move in until the night before classes started. We had unpacked the kitchen already and organized everything, but when we went to make food the first day of classes, we discovered that Roommate #3 had rearranged the ENTIRE kitchen after she had arrived. Needless to say, this was the first of many problems we have had with her.
Funny enough, the earpiece on my phone is broken, so the only way I can talk on it IS on speaker phone, so I am that roommate. However, I live in an apartment, so I can go into my bedroom and shut the door if I get a phone call.
my roommate freshmen year not only made my bed, but she cleaned off my desk, organized my books in a way i didn't organize them, and hid everything that I usually left out in random drawers that i didn't even use. I couldn't find any of my toiletries the next morning -_-
I didn't go so far as to making my roommate's bed, but oh my gosh I was a complete and total freak about cleanliness when I was in the dorms. Someone two doors down gets a case of athlete's foot was enough to make me liberal and vocal about and with the use of lysol. Thank goodness my roomie and I tolerated each other's weird quirks and could bond over our love of video games and horror movies.
You should do a video about what kind of student to not be. Like there's always that one annoying kid in class that asks the dumbest question, or that non-traditional student that asks "You mean, we have to type it?" lol.
I have had the lineup of bad roommates: the "Um, are those your crumbs on the counter and oh, BTW, I'm so paranoid about mice and mold and you burning down the house that I'm going to make regular checks of your room"; the "I'm going to spill sangria on the floor in front of you and then not clean it up for three weeks"; the "I'm going to spend my days in the living room staring silently into space and sighing contentedly, until you need the kitchen, then I will cook a feast for one."
I'm living in a dorm while studying abroad in the US this year, and all I can say is that I'm so glad I got a single room. I'm sure having a roommate can be great, but I'm just too fond of my privacy.
Exception to the 'don't make your roommate's bed' rule: If they normally make it and they're running late and leave in a hurry. My roommate did it for me once and it was such a nice surprise to come back to after a crappy day. It all just comes down to intentions, folks.
Great suggestions. I had a roommate that was a complete slob but as long as his creepy crawling clothing didn't make it's way over to my side and strangle me at night, I had no problem. You should do a roommate on the top 5 ways to eat healthy in college.
My sis had the "refuses to turn the volume down roomate". So to get back at her she wld take her stapler and put it in a different drawer every couple of weeks... her roomate thought she was going insane lol
suggestions on where to look to apply to college? I'm a junior and am starting to freak out about where i should be looking for scholarships and have NO CLUE on how to pick a college
1. Don't panic. It will all work out. If you were a senior, freaking out would be warranted. Luckily, you still have time.
2. Talk to your school's guidance councilor. They'll be able to tell you about where to get scholarships at and what school's in your state (and maybe out of state) offer your major.
@EmoVince101 I wouldn't go to Chicago if I were you. U of I and UIC are really poor and don't give out any scholarships. My sister applied there and she had a 32 ACT and a 3.8 GPA from IMSA (a private school in Illinois) and they didn't offer her a scholarship. For those schools, I think out of state is around 50,000 per year.
You help so much Hayley! I'm in my first year at uni right now haha and everything you've talked about is everything I want to know. Aaaaand it all seems accurate and has helped. So thanks ;)!
I have heard some roommate horror stories and thankfully I really like my roommate. We used to hangout all the time when school first started, but we really don't do that anymore. We talk a little bit, not all the time, and I'm really happy and lucky for this situation.
I'm so glad I don't have a roommate.. although some of my flat mates make me a bit inside due to their mess in the kitchen.. but I try not to make a song and dance of it..
Luckily my roommate is more of a suitemate 'cause we have our own lockable rooms. I like to think this makes pretending he doesn't exist completely acceptable. It helps that he's at home for like 5 hours a week tops. I actually have no idea where he goes...
advice on waiting out the time before admissions decisions come in? cause none of my decisions are sent out until late march and i am DYING! and i'm super scared that i just won't get into any of my schools and it will be too late to apply for more.
what do you do if flat mates constantly ignore you and when they do talk to you they just say really annoying things which you have no way of responding to. I am quiet and friendly so didn't think I would have a problem but my flat mates are all loud and offensive which really isn't my thing so now I have been leading a lonely life in a flat of seven because I like to sit with wine or tea and talk. I don't like having my name shouted at me every time I enter the hall by my flat mate.
A friend of mine went to university this year ad her room mate was a girl she knew and went to our school (I'm a grade underneath them) and apparently this girl takes the latest classes, sleeps all day, is a huge slob, and is the depressing whiner Skyping all day..all I hope for is a decent person as a room mate..
I was with my friend when he went into his dorm to get something and, when he got in there, he discovered that his roommate had disappeared without warning. Is there any special etiquette on leaving your roommate? Because I think the roommate in question did it the really rude, careless way.
The girl I lived with in freshers year was definitely a number one/two/three combo. But I was a bit of a four in response. And to those of you UK-ers saying you don't have roommates... don't speak too soon my friends -- my university accidentally accepted 300 too many people and hey presto, single rooms became double rooms.
Yes there is worse than the "surprise". My friend who studies in the Netherlands still (like 3 years later) tells the story about the time he had the surprise - across a language barrier with everyone yelling.
I have three number two's on my floor. I would add a number six also; two guys (brothers) sharing a 12m2 room next to your room. You don't want that. Oh, and since I live in the Netherlands I guess I might as well add number seven; stoners.
my first roommate and i knew each from high school. by the end of the year we just never spoke to each other. we liked each other, but we didn't like LIVING with each other.
you should make a video on getting involved or being social: 2 things i suck at
i totally had the number 2 roommate, except she would go in our makeshift closet to talk... it wasn't soundproof. and she would often be crying on the phone or having really tearful upset conversations and then come out like nothing was wrong and just say "fine" when i asked her how she was or "no" if she wanted to talk. very, very awkward.
My first roommate and I could not stand each other. I was a messy (I can admit it) and liked things quiet and she was a neat freak who didn't understand the idea of headphones. Like, my college could not have matched two people less suited for each other! Haha. It was a good learning experience, though.
@EmoVince101 I did that. I'm from WV but decided to come to UT for uni. Honestly, its not that bad. Even the people from here didn't really know anyone. Also, most colleges have "Welcome to Uni" activities the first weekend, so freshmen can meet new people and get adjusted to being away from home. For me personally, living in the dorms was a great way to meet people. Good luck!
So glad I don't have a roommate! I do have neighbours though, so I try to be considerate of them, and I'll have housemates next year... We're all pretty easy going though, so no arguments... I hope...
Luckily, my roommate is not any of these! And I am not any of these either. I really lucked out because of lot of my friends got these types of roommates. I love my roommate!! We're currently sitting on our respective beds, watching videos on our laptops. Perfect.
BAMBI!

BaileySandwich22 1 month ago
@BaileySandwich22 A few tips.
1. Don't panic. It will all work out. If you were a senior, freaking out would be warranted. Luckily, you still have time.
2. Talk to your school's guidance councilor. They'll be able to tell you about where to get scholarships at and what school's in your state (and maybe out of state) offer your major.
3. When all else fails, google search.
Good luck!

Luckily my roommate is more of a suitemate 'cause we have our own lockable rooms. I like to think this makes pretending he doesn't exist completely acceptable. It helps that he's at home for like 5 hours a week tops. I actually have no idea where he goes...

Haha. I just cleaned the bathroom for my suit. This was excellently timed. Not I feel like a great person.

Another rule: Don't be the drug dealer who constantly has people traipsing through everyone else's living space to collect their substances.

what do you do if flat mates constantly ignore you and when they do talk to you they just say really annoying things which you have no way of responding to.

Because I think the roommate in question did it the really rude, careless way.
muffinbandit13 1 month ago
The girl I lived with in freshers year was definitely a number one/two/three combo. But I was a bit of a four in response. And to those of you UK-ers saying you don't have roommates... don't speak too soon my friends -- my university accidentally accepted 300 too many people and hey presto, single rooms became double rooms.

Yes there is worse than the "surprise". My friend who studies in the Netherlands still (like 3 years later) tells the story about the time he had the surprise - across a language barrier with everyone yelling.
Loreki 1 month ago
I have three number two's on my floor. I would add a number six also; two guys (brothers) sharing a 12m2 room next to your room. You don't want that. Oh, and since I live in the Netherlands I guess I might as well add number seven; stoners.

i totally had the number 2 roommate, except she would go in our makeshift closet to talk... it wasn't soundproof. and she would often be crying on the phone or having really tearful upset conversations and then come out like nothing was wrong and just say "fine" when i asked her how she was or "no" if she wanted to talk. very, very awkward.

My first roommate and I could not stand each other. I was a messy (I can admit it) and liked things quiet and she was a neat freak who didn't understand the idea of headphones. Like, my college could not have matched two people less suited for each other! Haha. It was a good learning experience, though.

LAshlieH 1 month ago
@EmoVince101 I did that. I'm from WV but decided to come to UT for uni. Honestly, its not that bad. Even the people from here didn't really know anyone. Also, most colleges have "Welcome to Uni" activities the first weekend, so freshmen can meet new people and get adjusted to being away from home. For me personally, living in the dorms was a great way to meet people. Good luck!
