There are three seasons, each of them clocking in at 13 episodes each, along with a special episode. Thus, the whole anime has 40 episodes. The first season (Minami-ke) is definitely the strongest, the second (Minami-ke Okawari) isn't as great as the third (Minami-ke Okaeri,) but they're all sweet imo. I recommend you watch the first season and see how you feel after that. If you're really interested after that, check out the second and third.
