In response to Eyalbass, he used high output pickups into a moderately driven bass amp running with a number of horns in the cab, resulting in his rather unique raunchy tone. He often used a little chorus or flange, but the effect you are referring to is likely the Fernandes bass sustainer(like the guitar sustainer they make), as far as I know it it was a prototype and he had the only one, the little bass solo is running on the 5th harmonic mode.
One of the greatist bands of all time I remember seeing them in 2009 their second to last show greast show of my life. Rip Peter save me a seat when i get up their where gonna jam
On the album that kick ass amazing slow part is sung by Kenny. I love Peter to death but Kenny is better for that part. Whenever I saw them live Peter sings during that section. I guess Kenny can't sing that live.
One two, fuck you~! Awesome! And to the dude who commented that they ripped off Aqualung at the beginning: There are actually rifts throughout the song. And considering what a great musician Peter was- it's more like a tribute to Jethro Tull. Think about it.
Peter Steele: “After my mother passed away last year and a couple of other things happened, I pretty much got back to my faith. I was born Roman Catholic. I go to church on Sunday and I do read the Bible. I went to confession for the first time in 30 years. And the priest was very happy that I had come back to church.I’ve always thought that the meaning of life was to try to find something to live for. Now I realize, all this time, it is finding something to die for. I will die for my faith.
@TheCekoz666 Peter Steele died from heart failure NOT from an OD or HIV, he was clean and healthy for the 1st time in a long time, so it doesn't make sense to any REAL TON fan that he died... Grow up dude
@anniebabeblues And if you know that a friend of mine recently had a heart attack at 20, while sitting behind his desk at work... Kinda makes you think about how easy it can be to get a heart attack, even under absolute normal circumstances.
No drugs, no alcohol, no nothing, BAM, heart attack, reanimation, now he's in a coma...
sorry to hear that and 6 months ago i would have thought, "no way, not at 20". but recently at 30 i had a high blood pressure scare that hospitalized me for a few days; now, i can see how it can happen to anyone. doesnt matter what you do really.
peter was that way as well. amy winehouse's death gets called a tragedy, but everyone had to have seen that coming. peter died and no one saw that coming. that's what a tragedy is supposed to be. not the expected.
Oh, yeah, I've got an update on my friend! HE LIVES! :D
He's on a pacemaker, but he's doing fine :D
So apparently he initially kind of... DIED, got reanimated, went in that coma, got out of it and now lives on as if nothing happened during those 5 weeks... He's indestructible...
@anniebabeblues yes he was clean when he died, but the damage was done. Between Coke, alcohol and steroid abuse over the years, his cardiovascular system was wrecked. There was also an Anomaly in his heart that may have contributed to his death. you reap what you sow, it is sad but we all forge our own destiny as we go.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what Pete painted his fretboard with? I'm going to be getting a bass soon and plan on painting it the same way. I might even do it with my guitar too.
You have no idea of how much of a Type O negative fan I am, but I only love the middle part of this song, I mostly enjoy their doomier stuff! Same thing with Some stupid tomorrow and We hate everyone.
do you know why this band never made it into the mainstream properly shit like linkin park korn etc.Because this bands image and lyrics were just to dark for the mainstream. But thats not saying there shit or anything they were an amazing band just sucks peter died if only they toured in australia.Probably last great/unique band we ll see in a long time.
"You probably noticed me playing bass one-handed there. Well, with a face as ugly as mine, you learn to do a lot of things one-handed..." - Peter Steele
@67675656565655656565 Who are you trying to convince? Me? My name is based on part of a Type O Negative song! Shit, even someone without extensive knowledge of Type O Negative and of Pete's glorious... er, uh, 'self-deprecating sense of humor', could just look at the video and see that he was joking. The man played up the whole brooding 'sex symbol' thing like a pro.
@JAVIER7864 He uses a bass chorus and an overdrive pedal. His basses tend to be very specific hard to find models too, which probably contribute to the sound as well, but a Boss CEB-3 and Boss ODB-3 and any old 4-string tuned BEAD will sounded close enough.
@nickrulez809765 i think so. type o always would play intros to songs just to kind of fuck with people. there's a video on youtube of them playing i don't wanna be me and after the song they play a badass intro of black sabbath's lord of this world
I'm 40-years-old and I totally dismissed this band back in the 90's when they were in their prime...a mistake I thoroughly regret. I had the chance to see Alice in Chains back in 1993 in Seattle and turned the offer down..."Only fools make mistakes twice".
This is by far my favorite version of this song...I think Peter's singing is much more melodic and heartfelt than that of Kenny's version on the album. He sounds like he's really pleading.
@kmsmith1210 I actually didn't fully appreciate this song until I heard this version. I liked it a lot before, sure, but I just can't get enough of it now. It moved from one of my least favorite Type O songs to probably in my top five.
@PeriodicTableware A totally underrated band...too bad Steele's gone. I had the chance of seeing them live here in Dallas like 2-years ago or so and passed up the chance because it was on a week day, and had to get up early for work the next morning. Big regret.
@kmsmith1210 I know, terribly underrated. I've been listening to them for years, and they're actually my favorite band. I never really took seeing them live seriously because I just don't do concerts, and because I always thought I could, you know, see them some time in the future. Not anymore. I cried when he died.
@PeriodicTableware I didn't cry, but I was really disturbed by his death...Just like I was when Michael Jackson died (Yes, I have EXTREMELY diverse musical tastes!). Everytime a Gen X era musician dies, It's rough on me. Symbolizes the death of my youth I guess...they were the soundtracks throughout different times in my life. Jackson was there for me during the early 80's, and Type O' and Grunge was there during the 90's. 2009-10...bad years for many Gen X figure heads dying off YOUNG.
@kmsmith1210 This is actually the first time I've had to deal with losing a... well, an idol. These guys were there for me more than my family ever was. I don't know how long it will be before I'm actually over it, or if that's even possible.
@PeriodicTableware I don't know that you ever "get over it". Music is powerful, Type O's was and is so powerful because of the genuine emotion behind it. They aren't some artist to those who they moved. They fell more like friends than anything if that makes sense. I've found it to be true for myself that when you feel connected through music they feel like a part of you. Peter was an exceptional person, one I'm grateful for. Wishing you the best.
@Buckyfanatic It makes perfect sense. They've been with me longer than anyone else, and they had a huge influence on me growing up. I don't think I'd be the same person I am without their "support" and that connection.
I'm both overjoyed and saddened to find someone who feels the same way I do about Type O, because you feel the connection, but you also feel the loss.
@PeriodicTableware Music for me has been the medium in which I find balance in life. My memories have music attached to them instead of people. All I can say is don't let go of the connection, it's still as important today as it was when it started. I wish I could say I didn't feel the loss. It's been so hard these last few months, Pete had a big part in forming my love of music, like you I miss him dearly and constantly. I have lost a few hero's both musically and in my family. Hugs
@PeriodicTableware I don't know that you ever "get over it". Music is powerful, Type O's was and is so powerful because of the genuine emotion behind it. What does Pete say between "In the shadow of the light from a black sun" and "Where are the frost giants I've begged for protection?" It doesn't sound like what is said on the album version and I can't for the life of me make it out.
@deafinit I realize that, but I was wondering if anyone could understand what he was saying here. I'm a freak about lyrics and my brain itches unless I know what's being said. Unfortunately for me, this is one of my favorite videos to watch on YouTube. :S
This song paints a picture in my mind of a dying norse warrior, freezing to death after a week long battle in the freezing grips of a snowy mountain, everyone slaughtered but him...yelling at the top of his lungs to the gods to let him avenge the death of his only son.
we started chanting it at their recent cincinatti show and peter about 30 minutes into the set goes..hey i heard some of you saying we sucked early, well you know what i have to say to that!....you really hurt my feelings! (acts like hes crying) then he says to punish you, we were just going to play an hour but now were playing 90 minutes! hahaha gota love em
Everyone knows the "You suck!" stems from Origin of the Feces because the "audience" chants it throughout the album.
Anywho, this performance of the song is amazing, I prefer it over the album version. I've only had the pleasure of seeing Type O once, but they're one of my favorites and I hope they tour again soon damns it.
whats ironic about this statement is when i saw type o the dude we all started chanting you suck you suck and this guy next to me goes you paid 15 american dollars to be here...and his friends were like what the fuck? and i lean to him and go AND WERE GETTIN PAID TONIGHT! and he laughs and says that guy gets it!. theyre one of my favorite bands also and theyre amazing live. now that peter is sober
Kenny sings a big part of this song on the album. Kenny is so awesome. Since Lord Petrus' decline, my appreciation for Kenny's abilities has increased.
i know type o negative show's are really good i remember when i saw them they started playing christan woman and everybody was singing along then they light part of the song came and everybody started moshing lol but i had a really good time
I love this faster version to this tune,Petes Little solo half way through iz amazing. To this fucking day i dont no wot he uses to get that kind of sound from his bass. Bizzare fest 1999!!
about that bass sound...im not sure what kind he uses but i wanna say it might be a boss distortion pedal that he runs through a delay. After that im jus guess but he might run it through a sustainer too
In response to Eyalbass, he used high output pickups into a moderately driven bass amp running with a number of horns in the cab, resulting in his rather unique raunchy tone. They usually reply to the "you suck" chant with something like," you paid 25 bucks to see our sorry asses, who sucks now?"
ikcinbaz 2 years ago 4
we started chanting it at their recent cincinatti show and peter about 30 minutes into the set goes..hey i heard some of you saying we sucked early, well you know what i have to say to that!....you really hurt my feelings!

I've only had the pleasure of seeing Type O once, but they're one of my favorites and I hope they tour again soon damns it.

whats ironic about this statement is when i saw type o the dude we all started chanting you suck you suck and this guy next to me goes you paid 15 american dollars to be here...and his friends were like what the fuck? and i lean to him and go AND WERE GETTIN PAID TONIGHT! and he laughs and says that guy gets it!. theyre one of my favorite bands also and theyre amazing live. now that peter is sober
hellyeahyousuck1984 2 years ago 2

an underrated band period. If you listen to the melodies and ideas they come up with, it's brilliant stuff

Peter is a much better bass player than he gets credit for. Nice to see him show off a bit in this one.

the intro Peter plays starting at 0.16 sounds a bit like "In the Hall of the Mountain King" or "Dovre gubbens hall" by Edvard Grieg.

Kenny sings a big part of this song on the album. Kenny is so awesome. Since Lord Petrus' decline, my appreciation for Kenny's abilities has increased.

No Problem Dude.
lurch6foot4 4 years ago
about that bass sound...im not sure what kind he uses but i wanna say it might be a boss distortion pedal that he runs through a delay. After that im jus guess but he might run it through a sustainer too
