Sturmovik series is the best, but Janes WWII Fighters was a great game, that was ahead of it's time when it first came out. And sadly, not as successful as it deserved to be.
i remember playing this when i was like 6 and i was a pro at it. on christmas break and on christmas eve me and dad would sit down and play it together. no way in hell does IL2 beat this game.. Janes WWII fighters is truely still the best WWII flight sim ever.

IL2 can go fuck himself, THIS game rocks. Been playing it for about eight years and it's still funny. You can control your plane much easier than in IL2 when you don't own a joystick.
This game was great, its freaking 13 years old. It was amazing graphics for the time. This was one of, if not THE first game of its type to model bullet holes, and damage like it did, not to mention the shell casings ejecting from the wings. Better than Il-2? No, but it was first, and innovative for its time. Still a great game, IMO.

the only thing i don't like about IL-2 (i only have the demo) is when you crash even if your plane doesn't blow up at first it does this veiw from long distance away instead of cockpit veiw and its retarded P.S. it is birds of prey not older ones.
Probably the reason you like this game over IL-2 is because it's so easy :S onscreen arrows and such, it's just not the way it's supposed to be. IL-2 has a less cluttered screen.
@Rossco139 you can eliminate all the ' helps' available if you so desire ( if I do not remember wrong), & make it into a super hard game. The uniqueness of this game are the victim window, the excellent special effects to put you right there in the combat . I did not say it is the best 'simulator' , did I ? Erm... no... No where near IL-2, especially with mods (a few of which I developed). You can't compare this to IL-2 (original), and you can't even compare the original IL-2 to 1946 4.09 with mods. "Violent explosions and vivid gunfire", as you would define them, are for movies like Rambo or Terminator, not sims. If a teaspoon more realism comes with a ton of difficulty and inconvenience, give me that realism, and keep your arcade cupcakes! :)
You can't really fairly compare this 1998 classic to a 2001-2009 game, created years later. At the time, this game was the best thing out there. You can't compare IL2 and WWII fighters because of the age difference, thats like comparing a model T to a jet fighter.
When this game came out, it was the best.

Best? Not even close to IL2...not even close. IL2 is the BEST WW2 Combat sim ever created. There is a reason I and thousands of other people have been flying it since 2001.
IL-2 46 DVD on sale for the low price of 9 US dollars. Do yourself a favor and pick this one of a kind combat sim up. Anyone that puts another WW2 combat sim ahead of IL2 has little knowledge of WW2 aviation and general history.
graphic card issues I think, I have many issues with this game as well, don't think it works well on new generation graphic cards. I've been having this problem since i upgraded from my Nivdia Geforce FX 5200, it was the last one I ever had that they game worked for and I've gone through two since.
u got bad accuracy ur not getting on any lead of the enemy and plus IL-2 is an amzing fighter & bomber aircraft simulator but my best is propably pacific fighters
Seriously, as I fly offline 99% of the time, and I have several years worth of experience with Il-2, as well as having played WWIIF by Janes a long time ago - the latter is a very fine game. In its day it was truly the best.
Now, no. When you remove all the map icons, HUD, subtitles and other such c**p from Il-2, you add the mods and the years of support it has, it's a far better game (yes, offline).
Besides, WWIIF has, like 90% of the other sims, NW Europe and a few Luftwaffe/USAAF planes.

To me this doesn't really look comparable to IL-2. IL-2 is a realistic simulation while this appears to take more of an arcade-like approach reminiscent to the likes of Ace Combat. Singleplayer or multiplayer, it appears to me to depend on whether the player wants a realistic simulation or a movie-like arcade game.

Ok, when it came out I really liked it and must say that the engine sound of the DB605 and RR-merlin have never been that close to the real thing. However the rest tends to be a little too arcade and if you look for simulation rather than game, Il-2 cannot be outclassed.

How come you were hitting the plane without even having a lead-angle? Doesn't that make the game a bit too easy? I mean, even BF1942 had more demands on accuracy than that. (which would be my prefered game if wanting to learn the basics dogfighting techniques in an arcady-setting.)
the newer IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 is way better, cause it has over 300 planes and it has more realistic features, this was a good game maybe like 20 years ago.
IL 2 is a great sim, but you can only play like, what is it, 64 players online!? And thats only on occassion. Aces High has hundreds of players most of the day. Even during the earliest hours(1am-5am) you can usually find at least a hundred guys in an arena. Aces High may not be as detailed, but it is built for massive multiplayer game play.
It sounds like your asking a question, but yea you have to pay 15 bucks a month. Big deal! It's worth it to play hundreds of REAL opponents 24 hours a day. Playing against the computer sucks. There is not a single sim out there that has AI that cant be beat or has as many people playing at one time;.the real competition is online.
This was my favorite simulator until il2 arrived... The missions were really great, i liked the background music and the radio voices. The live view of the targeted object was also impressive. I never forget those ground attack missions against wehrmaht units with the p47 or p38.
I got this game 10 years ago. I play it on my laptop. Nothing beats WW2 fighters. I see that you applied the cheats to the game. I also do it. They should have made an expansion for this game.
Dude, you had unlimited ammo on. I saw that the number of bullets didn't go down when you were shooting at that FW-190. They should remake this game for Winndows 2000, Vista, and XP. I have Windows Vista for my laptop and it works.
The music score & special sound effects are so good that IL-2 is NOT EVEN CLOSE in comparison. This is especially true for the opening Russian music score for the IL-2, which is so monotonous, low quality and anti-climactic. :)
I had the original , single player IL-2 which I hardly played any more because the sound was so lousy & boring. If you said the sound is so good, probably they have improved the IL-2 game since then or probably it is the internet version.
I don't what IL-2 you have played but at least i'm pretty satisfied with Pacific Fighters' gun sounds. Only gun sound what i dislike is the sound of .50 cals in exterior cam.
Sounds like shit gotta admit that. But other sounds are like candy to my ears :D.
And from that 37 mm i don't like that gun so much. It's muzzle flash nearly blinds you when you shoot with it. Gladly it's not autocannon. But it's raw power ALMOST covers it's bad sides.
Just recently IL-2 has become moddable, letting users add their content such as sound replacements, effects and even new aircraft! There's a great community called AAA which restricts modding so that you can't edit fligth models or weapons, keeping the game as clean as possible. After all, it was a perfect hit before it became moddable :) I sure get your point about old flight sims, I can even recall playing Microprose's DOGFIGHT from 1993 when I was young! :D
il2 does the enemy aircraft have limited ranges you can ajust.guns.from. so if i set my guns at 500 yrds does the enemys do the same. and altitudes whats the hihgest you can fly 10.00ft i have num 1 2002
Well, if you're looking for a good bundle to get all the IL-2 expansionpacks and patches as a single purchase, you should go for the "Il-2 1946" bundle which adds a few "What-if" late war planes.
Regarding your question, you can set your own guns, not the enemies though thats unnecessary, you can fly quite high.. maybe 30.000 feet or so with the right planes.. High level b17 escorts are great with looong contrails and the such :)
Umm..I really doubt that that is the best air combat game. There are many other games. One is battleground europe online. You can form air raids or bomb factories. And so much more stuff. While other ppl are playing infantry and navel.
because the graphic card requirement demands below GeForce2! It cannot handle T&L Architecture. Too bad none of the newer aircombat game has the 'carnage window' to experience the sight & sound of destruction up-close. Probably this feature is extremely program-intensive to make.

Best? Not even close to IL2...not even close. IL2 is the BEST WW2 Combat sim ever created. There is a reason I and thousands of other people have been flying it since 2001.
IL-2 46 DVD on sale for the low price of 9 US dollars. Do yourself a favor and pick this one of a kind combat sim up. Anyone that puts another WW2 combat sim ahead of IL2 has little knowledge of WW2 aviation and general history.

graphic card issues I think, I have many issues with this game as well, don't think it works well on new generation graphic cards. I've been having this problem since i upgraded from my Nivdia Geforce FX 5200, it was the last one I ever had that they game worked for and I've gone through two since.

Seriously, as I fly offline 99% of the time, and I have several years worth of experience with Il-2, as well as having played WWIIF by Janes a long time ago - the latter is a very fine game. In its day it was truly the best.
Now, no. When you remove all the map icons, HUD, subtitles and other such c**p from Il-2, you add the mods and the years of support it has, it's a far better game (yes, offline).
Besides, WWIIF has, like 90% of the other sims, NW Europe and a few Luftwaffe/USAAF planes.

To me this doesn't really look comparable to IL-2. IL-2 is a realistic simulation while this appears to take more of an arcade-like approach reminiscent to the likes of Ace Combat. Singleplayer or multiplayer, it appears to me to depend on whether the player wants a realistic simulation or a movie-like arcade game.

Ok, when it came out I really liked it and must say that the engine sound of the DB605 and RR-merlin have never been that close to the real thing. However the rest tends to be a little too arcade and if you look for simulation rather than game, Il-2 cannot be outclassed.

How come you were hitting the plane without even having a lead-angle? Doesn't that make the game a bit too easy? I mean, even BF1942 had more demands on accuracy than that. (which would be my prefered game if wanting to learn the basics dogfighting techniques in an arcady-setting.)

IL 2 is a great sim, but you can only play like, what is it, 64 players online!? And thats only on occassion. Aces High has hundreds of players most of the day. Even during the earliest hours(1am-5am) you can usually find at least a hundred guys in an arena. Aces High may not be as detailed, but it is built for massive multiplayer game play.

It sounds like your asking a question, but yea you have to pay 15 bucks a month. Big deal! It's worth it to play hundreds of REAL opponents 24 hours a day. Playing against the computer sucks. There is not a single sim out there that has AI that cant be beat or has as many people playing at one time;.the real competition is online.

This was my favorite simulator until il2 arrived... The missions were really great, i liked the background music and the radio voices. The live view of the targeted object was also impressive. I never forget those ground attack missions against wehrmaht units with the p47 or p38.

I got this game 10 years ago. I play it on my laptop. Nothing beats WW2 fighters. I see that you applied the cheats to the game. I also do it. They should have made an expansion for this game.

Dude, you had unlimited ammo on. I saw that the number of bullets didn't go down when you were shooting at that FW-190. They should remake this game for Winndows 2000, Vista, and XP. I have Windows Vista for my laptop and it works.

The music score & special sound effects are so good that IL-2 is NOT EVEN CLOSE in comparison. This is especially true for the opening Russian music score for the IL-2, which is so monotonous, low quality and anti-climactic. :)

Gun sounds in this game... sounds like someone blowing into thin pipe. IL 2 sounds...
When you pull the trigger of 37 mm cannon you hear just big bang and you can almost feel the whole plane shaking.
And since when music has mattered in games? I find it rather annoying if i hear some stupid music playing while i'm trying to consentrate into game.

I had the original , single player IL-2 which I hardly played any more because the sound was so lousy & boring. If you said the sound is so good, probably they have improved the IL-2 game since then or probably it is the internet version.

I don't what IL-2 you have played but at least i'm pretty satisfied with Pacific Fighters' gun sounds. Only gun sound what i dislike is the sound of .50 cals in exterior cam.
Sounds like shit gotta admit that. But other sounds are like candy to my ears :D.
And from that 37 mm i don't like that gun so much. It's muzzle flash nearly blinds you when you shoot with it. Gladly it's not autocannon. But it's raw power ALMOST covers it's bad sides.

Just recently IL-2 has become moddable, letting users add their content such as sound replacements, effects and even new aircraft! There's a great community called AAA which restricts modding so that you can't edit fligth models or weapons, keeping the game as clean as possible. After all, it was a perfect hit before it became moddable :) I sure get your point about old flight sims, I can even recall playing Microprose's DOGFIGHT from 1993 when I was young! :D

il2 does the enemy aircraft have limited ranges you can ajust.guns.from. so if i set my guns at 500 yrds does the enemys do the same. and altitudes whats the hihgest you can fly 10.00ft i have num 1 2002

Well, if you're looking for a good bundle to get all the IL-2 expansionpacks and patches as a single purchase, you should go for the "Il-2 1946" bundle which adds a few "What-if" late war planes.
Regarding your question, you can set your own guns, not the enemies though thats unnecessary, you can fly quite high.. maybe 30.000 feet or so with the right planes.. High level b17 escorts are great with looong contrails and the such :)

Umm..I really doubt that that is the best air combat game. There are many other games. One is battleground europe online. You can form air raids or bomb factories. And so much more stuff. While other ppl are playing infantry and navel.

because the graphic card requirement demands below GeForce2! It cannot handle T&L Architecture. Too bad none of the newer aircombat game has the 'carnage window' to experience the sight & sound of destruction up-close. Probably this feature is extremely program-intensive to make.
