At first when I watched this film I thought It was Tim Burton, because it is slightly reminiscent of The Nightmare B4 Xmas (and I'm not just saying that because it's an amazing claymation) But then I noticed it's not Tim Burton's typical style. Sure it's got a creepy intrigue, but it's not gothic, and it actually tries to SCARE you and it does so with an UNDERLYING plot. Anyway I was BLOWN AWAY by this movie and If I were at least 7 years younger It would be a childhood classic of mine!
woowooow .. i just happen to LOVE animation movies and MOST OF ALL STOP ANIMATION, cause it's such an amazing-hard.and,totally awesome mega foxy hot ART!
this is very creepy it kind of makes you think maybe just maybe we are not so different have you ever feet like someone is tuching you maybe someone is pulling your strings
See the DVD special features for more Henry Selick and crew in the making of this stop-motion animation (silicone, not clay) movie :)
Metal armatures with silicone hands, faces, etc.. Love it:) clay animation just doesn't have the same cool look as Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, or Coraline.
well, technically speaking not all clays dry out at the same rate. Certainly Play-Dough or ceramic clay dry out quite quickly if you leave them out, but there are also wax-based clays such as Sculpey which will not dry out in air: they have to be baked. Sculpey is very popular with amateur and even professional stop-motion animators.
Where as the Selick approach - Nightmare before christmas,James and the giant peach + Coraline have all used puppets as opposed to clay.
It's an aesthetic thing aswell as functional, with clay it can often look more amateur as fingerprints etc show up on the model. With latex foam or other such puppets (coraline) you can get what's known to animators as "chatter" or "boiling" its when you can notice little movements in the puppet outside of the intended
use your imagination. And you will see... if you can't think of atleast one way to make a movie via stop motion and clay.. then tv and internet has killed it.. if it has.. id go sit in a dark room for a very very long time.. it will come back :-) serious.. as long as you keep clay moist and/or in a moist enviroment it takes a long time to dry out. and as mystic says wax based don't dry out till baked. another thing is the craftman ship of the people that make these can sculpt them in minutes
He looks like the puppets in his movies, in a similar way that some people look like their pets. I think he looks creepy cool. I can't wait until this movie comes out!!! I'm really excited.
what materials was coraline made of?

It'd would have been AWESOME to be in this movie!!!!!!!! =D I sure wanted to play Coraline, I always do imitations of her when I'm bored :)

I love the little 'puppet vs. creator' montage. Coraline has so much life, despite being a puppet, it's almost scary.

Oh! I didn't know they were puppets! I thought they were clay XD

if they were clay they would dry out, and make it to hard to move the limbs as they do.

That's a really nice point of view. It certainly helps the animators to deal with the stuff they want to portray. Craftsmen to their bones.
