Great stuff YP. There was a lot of uncertainty with the new EPA regs regarding diesel engines so importation of the Lister clones(Listeroids) ground to a halt at the beginning of the year. Prices sky-rocket upwards of 4k-5k as supply dried up. I just received a quote from Anand Enterprises (They build the Powerline version) and it appears that individuals ARE successfully importing them from India for about $1300 to the nearest sea port. google poweranand for more info.
@shatheprodigy That depends on the actual situation. If I were struck by a tornado or a bad winter storm, where the power could go out for a couple weeks or a month. I can sit comfortably and help my neighborhood as well. If it's a Nat. Disaster long term, I have already made plans and people to work with defending what I have. Indeed, great engines those. I'm not sure on the quality of these Indian built coppies, but if you spend a little while going over the engine checking everything is correct then I should think they could last just as long as the original made here in England.
Very nice generator set you have there, it is one of my dreams to one day, have a home "off grid."

@rcvideogamer I actually believe this is a great unit for city of country. I have seen these rigged in city basements and country porches. @KesslersCross They are around, just have to keep looking, However, these are also made new as clones in india, as they are still very popular for isolated areas(Lister stopped making them in the late 80's ), might be worth checking out, I believe Listeroid is one brand!
Great set up. One question...you mention in the video using the "highest voltage possible in your battery bank, for the best effficiency" I guess Im confused...isnt the T-105 a 6 volt golf cart battery? @Archangel0804 Read the comments down to "CettoMicco" question, I answered that in three parts. No 12 volts are not better than 6. And there are some 2 volt batteries that are better than the 6.
@Yankeeprepper So sorry to hear that. My collie is 2 this June so he is still a pup. I will see if I can roll him into some footage sometime soon. I am due for a new vid. Keep yours coming love the info.
man i sure wished i had one of these.... not hoping for the worst too, but i can see what's rolling down the hill!
and not to mention you can use it to saw your firewood! in any kind of serious shortage you'd have to chop all of your firewood by hand, but get a circular saw and you will go throught any winter easier!
and the exaust is a great way to keep the moles at bay!

i love the Lister, I saw on for sale that ran off of natural gas. I was thinking about getting one and making my own methane to run it. Have you ever heard of anyone attempting that.
we live in the same part of the country! where did you buy your lister at? i am really intrested in the cast iron diesels but kind of hard to find anything around here. just wondering where you picked yours up at.
Im in awe my friend. I am new to the awakening. My wife and I are having a baby and are house shopping this month. I can not download and memerize your videos fast enough haha. We are starting phase 1 of the triangle. You are great inspiration. Thank you friend.
I have a question for you ...In a SHTF scenario (say EMP circumstances which I believe is most likely scenario )...without vehicles... how do you suppose you would transport large quantities of oil, diesel, cooking oil etc, needed to run your Lister? Have you personally addressed hardening your vehicle(s) for an EMP attack. Maybe build a HUGE "drive-in" faraday cage capable of storing a vehicle? Just a thought. Thanks and keep up the great posts.
Mr. Prepper I have what could be a silly question. Why do people who make off grid electric systems use 6v batteries? What is the difference between using 6v and 12v. great vids. Thanks.
1. Since they are connected together in series, they share any charge or discharge current equally (as all series-connected circuits do). This helps to ensure that they both carry their "fair share" of the load. Connecting 12-volt batteries in parallel lacks this advantage . This can result in shorter battery life, and less effective capacity from the pair of 12v batteries.
@CettoMicco 2. 6-volt golf cart batteries are exceptionally rugged, due to the harsh nature of their use in golf carts. Typically, they last a long time in RV service, yet aren't much more expensive than good-quality 12 volt deep-cycle batteries
i dont know that i'd want to attract that much attention to myself with a loud diesel engine rumbling in my basement. part of survival in such a situation is going un noticed so as not to entice others to want what you have. think i'll be going the solar route. sweet set up though.
One comment on the solar aspect came up. It would be a great supplement (trickle charger) For when your away. Or on low demand. Saves on your precious fuel!
@Yankeeprepper You just might be my new hero guru...just kidding I don't have heroes or gurus, but IF I did you da man. You're doing everything I *should* be doing at this point. Wow.
Subbed and thanks for making these videos my friend :)
By the way, gotta big creek running through my property and it only goes dry about 3 a month per year, but it raise way up and goes way down. Kind of a major gutter the runs off to a small river.
A VERY NICE VIDEO.. LOVE THAT DIESEL..EPA OR NO EPA.. THAT IS A NEAT ENGINE. YOU ARE USING ALL OF ITS HEAT..
SO WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE POLLUTION PER KWH.. IT CAN'T BE AS BAD AS THE NET RESULT FROM THE POWER COMPANIES.. WATER COOLED UNITS ARE THE WAY TO GO.. BUT THEN WHEN YOUR USING THE HEAT, THE EFFICIENCY OF THE MOTOR.. DIESEL OR GASOLINE DOES NOT MATTER.
hello i just wanted to ask what type of battery's thos were, are they lead plate sulfuric acid or gel ? i work at a auto shop and a little trick we use to keep our batterys from going bad (discharging) is to put them on wood this doesn't allow them to discharge as much just sitting there because of the temp, if the battery is on a cold surface the chemical reaction will slow down (concert floor or metal ) wood doesn't get as cold so its the best choice to keep a battery from discharging
Nice example of a Lister, I rebuilt stationaries from about 8 years old, A Lister D reverse rotation was one of my faves i worked on, they can kick out a nice amount of hp, and the running sound is lovely too. If your looking for a cheapy though a Villiers or JAP should do it. awesome for wells, lighting etc.
It is actually quite stupid that the EPA, the least successful, most hated division of the US government in history has banned one particular diesel generator. Diesel, as well as it's vegetable oil counterpart is actually more eco-friendly and efficient than gasoline. Take that EPA!!
Went to purchase my Lister Engine at Maine Central Diesel TODAY! They Still have it up on their Website. They say the EPA has Banned It! ...Lucky You! .. They said to Try Ebay? Can you tell me where You bought Yours? Did you Ban me from your website? I have written Many times... No reply... Maybe your too busy! Maybe I am in a Good Place... Banned by the EPA and the Yankee... But I don't Think So!!!!
@lastquest I have written you back twice but I don't think you are getting my replies. Is there a number I can call you, it would be easier for me. It is very hard to get a Lister now. The GOV. does not want you to be to independent. PM me if you can.
Just wanted to lyk that this video was the inspiration for me to go out and refit my own home, using a JKSON 6/1 as my auxiliary power supply! Can you help me with a couple of quick questions if its not a problem?
1.) What did you for sourcing the radiator hoses and mechanical temp gauges? Here, resources are pretty thin and auto radiator hoses are really expensive.
2.) Got any info on the glass fuel filter bowl? I dont trust the stock unit w/cotton filter.
@audiolabguy Everything I put on that engine is custom by me. I bought a very common tractor/bobcat diesel filter and bent the fuel lines myself. I bought radiator house from my local car parts store. The guages are racing guages or the hose temp guages came from the UK.
utterpower- d0t -c0m is a good resource to start with.
I am hooking up my Yaesu FT-101 EE 160-10 METER TRANSCEIVER I bought on Ebay from Jeff Campbell, from your recommendation!
Found a dealer of new Listers in Maine... Have known about these engines for years. I have a few questions.... Can I run this engine on used Engine Oil if the SHTF? Bet We could find alot of it in dead cars! Could I hook up the second fly wheel to an AC Motor or DC Car Starter with a belt and pulley? RSVP If you can.
@lastquest Yes you can run the engine on motor oil. I think there are some vid of people doing that on YT. That is my plan as well. There will be years and years of fuel left in cars if there ever was a major catastrophe, not to mention old cooking oil as well and grease. It sis best to cut the oil with diesel. And yes, you can hook up the fly wheel to anything the engine can handle. Sorry it took me so long to get back, I am just getting hammered.
@Yankeeprepper I'm just trying to say be careful. Practice without lighting, for at least a full day, eatting, hunting with bows, quietly, so 'goons' do not hear, cook without smoke.
If The SHTF then water, food could be more valuable than money, and there fore hide as much as possible.
You deserve to Survive for all the hard work yo do..
@Films4You I promise you I will be as carefull as possible. I am hoping to power more than just for my place. If the neighborhood comes together. I will be a valuable power source.
Great job on all that stuff! But..I was just wondering...If your home is normally on the grid, why not just get a good diesel generator and hook it up to your home, as most people do? It seems like you are spending a lot of money to accomplish the same thing. You still have to buy the diesel fuel, so what is the difference? Am I missing something? I was just wondering. Keep up the good work. You are giving us a lot of good information. Thanks!
@diazon2002 The point is longevity 1st, ease of parts and repair 2nd and then rate of fuel consumption. All these are the reasons people use these diesels all of the world in the harshest condtions. A "modern" diesel cannot compare to this machine. The fly wheels can also run endless devices that you might need in a SHTF, water pump, grinder, not to mentiion heating water. If you look at the lifespan of this machine, it is much cheaper than buying a modern one.
@vid009 There's a fella named John just outside of Ottawa who I bought mine off and has been great with technical support. His site is woodnstuff.ca , good luck.
Wow! Well done!! But I always wondered one thing. If the grid collapses, and 5000 desperate people find out you got what they want, how are you going to prevent them from swarming and robbing you? You might be able to defend yourself from a few, but thousands will be harder. You gotta close your eyes to sleep sometime, and they'll just burn the house above ya.
Still, I really like your set up.....makes me think even more! :-)
@MigDanskeren 10 to 12 years before it starts to degrade is what I have gathered from those living off grid. And it still won't be a "dead' system. Hard to tell how long if I am not using themvery much or just in emergencies. So it's like paying 300 dollars insurance a year. Which is pretty cheap.
I found a New Lister Single cylinder engine at Central Maine Diesel for $1533.00.
However they want the following prices for the accessories. Steel skid base $1050, Generator End $495, Heavy Duty 4 poles Generator $1295, and Cooling Radiator Assembly for $1495.
These Accessories seem quite High, as the Engine is only $1500.
Also, could I buy and alternator so as not to have to purchase an Inverter. I would Appreciate Your Input.
Nice system. Nice gen also. Like how you have the exhaust ported outside. Ive got a gen and will probably do the same with exhaust so I can run inside garage and keep secured during run times. I also like your battery rack. Guessing you have those in the basement or secured room. Mine are in the garage so I have a possible kid/pet issue so covered mine in plexi glass but moving to a modified gladiator cabinet.
Xcellent vdo, all of it, the engine, wonderful methods and info... but why dont you include anthenas to grow food, bigger veggies and frutes, and the colloides to make bigger richer frutes. We would be glad to see the best of every method.
yeah it is to a point , take a look in the realgoodsdot com thingy they have what looks like a good setup for just under 5,500 im sure its not top of the line but not a bad start i thought besafe brother
@happygillmore Solar is very inefficient and very expensive. The technology for "renewable energy" through solar to live at the level we are living at does not exsist.
@jawbone83 not as efficient. It's not that you can't use them, it's that I wanted a better system. You could use flashlight batteries is you want too I guess.
This is over my head to accomplish, but it is perfect to show me that there ARE solutions to the challenges that are coming soon. Thank you for the encouragement.
Hi Yankee, I'm just now looking at getting my Lister. I can't find one like yours though. The ones I see are slightly more modern but they run off any fuel at all.
@AnnieNM06 They take a bit of effort. There are modifications that can be made to start them with electric motors and even air motors, which I might do myself at a later date. Changfa and Changfa clone diesels might be a better fit. Check out utterpower-dot-com for research material. Or as a petite woman you probably would have no problem finding a strong dude to start it for you! (he doesn't have to be smart either, there are plenty of dumb ones out there)
Yankee prepper let me start of buy saying your the shit! Like you say there are too many ass hats out there. I have made preps here at my house and across the US and Canada. Now I have worked real hard and put away my pennies to move to my favorite region the boreal north. I like to you have some of the same expert badges from back in my army days at ft benning. I was hoping to chat with you about some of your videos for my family God bless and take care.
@Yankeeprepper In fact, everyone should do what you're doing here, in my opinion. There's no good reason to have these huge power grids. It creates too much dependency on a system with a single point of failure, and one which removes us from a basic understanding of what it takes to survive.
@vclxrr You can "say" whatever you want. But "green" is just another fancy word. Like "progressve" or "new age" etc.....I likfe to call it the old fashion label, BULLSHIT.
I wish I could setup something like that, just a little out of my price range at the moment but people stumble on the weirdest things so I will keep my eyes peeled for bargains. I am curious if you had ever looked into wood gas as an alternate fuels source? I have been looking into it as I have wooded land. I was just getting ready to start exercising my Google skills and look into the compatibility of wood gas in diesel engines.
@yankeeprepper how much horsepower does your lister engine have? if i can afford one that is very expensive then what do u think is the very best one to get for someone who isn't on a budget? sorry if i didnt catch it if you said it in the video but how much horse power?
I Have been looking for an alternative power system everything seemed just so expensive and improbable this video has openned my eyes however how much noise do you get through the floor in the house when its running (thinking of running this as a total off grid system and my girl isn't over keen on the noise) I've done some more research into this from first seeing it and I thank you for bringing it to my attention. Many thanks from an Englishman in Germany.
@johnnyboy41 It's very quiet. This machine is miracle in so many ways. The tires isolate the sound alot as well. And I have seen other guys run these in their basement with runner dampeners too.
Do a search on "crazy Jerry's diesel motorcycle" He has an off grid system with a lister he keeps on the back porch!!
i known of lister generators to run non stop for years in dairy farms in south america.they are great!you can even run fueloil or any type of diesel.mine was made in the 70s in argentina under german license.can't wait to set it up as a back up .
Could you send me a link for one of these things? Im really interested in buying one but cant find it anywhere

What is the difference between using 6v and 12v. great vids. Thanks.
CettoMicco 1 year ago
@CettoMicco They have several advantages:
1. Since they are connected together in series, they share any charge or discharge current equally (as all series-connected circuits do). This helps to ensure that they both carry their "fair share" of the load. Connecting 12-volt batteries in parallel lacks this advantage . This can result in shorter battery life, and less effective capacity from the pair of 12v batteries.
.
Yankeeprepper 1 year ago
@CettoMicco 2. 6-volt golf cart batteries are exceptionally rugged, due to the harsh nature of their use in golf carts. Typically, they last a long time in RV service, yet aren't much more expensive than good-quality 12 volt deep-cycle batteries

@Yankeeprepper Great, Thanks for the info.

i dont know that i'd want to attract that much attention to myself with a loud diesel engine rumbling in my basement. part of survival in such a situation is going un noticed so as not to entice others to want what you have. think i'll be going the solar route. sweet set up though.

HOW ABOUT THOSE DIESELS USED IN SMALL SAIL BOATS.

hello i just wanted to ask what type of battery's thos were, are they lead plate sulfuric acid or gel ? i work at a auto shop and a little trick we use to keep our batterys from going bad (discharging) is to put them on wood this doesn't allow them to discharge as much just sitting there because of the temp, if the battery is on a cold surface the chemical reaction will slow down (concert floor or metal ) wood doesn't get as cold so its the best choice to keep a battery from discharging

Hey Prepper!
Thanks!!!!
audiolabguy 1 year ago

RSVP If you can.
lastquest 1 year ago
@lastquest Yes you can run the engine on motor oil. I think there are some vid of people doing that on YT. That is my plan as well. There will be years and years of fuel left in cars if there ever was a major catastrophe, not to mention old cooking oil as well and grease. It sis best to cut the oil with diesel. And yes, you can hook up the fly wheel to anything the engine can handle. Sorry it took me so long to get back, I am just getting hammered.

@Yankeeprepper It may be an idea to build, say just a pipe, small lights and manhole cover as a dummy shelter to draw in any goons.
This could be in range from a highly camouflage place, you know why.
Films4You 1 year ago
Great job on all that stuff! But..I was just wondering...If your home is normally on the grid, why not just get a good diesel generator and hook it up to your home, as most people do? It seems like you are spending a lot of money to accomplish the same thing. You still have to buy the diesel fuel, so what is the difference? Am I missing something? I was just wondering. Keep up the good work. You are giving us a lot of good information. Thanks!
diazon2002 1 year ago
@diazon2002 The point is longevity 1st, ease of parts and repair 2nd and then rate of fuel consumption. All these are the reasons people use these diesels all of the world in the harshest condtions. A "modern" diesel cannot compare to this machine. The fly wheels can also run endless devices that you might need in a SHTF, water pump, grinder, not to mentiion heating water. If you look at the lifespan of this machine, it is much cheaper than buying a modern one.

Wow!

@AlternativePowerMan There are well over 5000 people that would like to have what I have now. Not many are willing to die for it.

How long do you batteries last if you don't use them?
MigDanskeren 1 year ago
@MigDanskeren 10 to 12 years before it starts to degrade is what I have gathered from those living off grid. And it still won't be a "dead' system. Hard to tell how long if I am not using themvery much or just in emergencies. So it's like paying 300 dollars insurance a year. Which is pretty cheap.
Yankeeprepper 1 year ago
@Yankeeprepper
Thanks for your response, I think I will look into this. It would be nice to have a power backup in case SHTF.

@48stevemr I don't mention it, because if you don't know how to crap, you probably should not watching an off grid video.

@Yankeeprepper In fact, everyone should do what you're doing here, in my opinion. There's no good reason to have these huge power grids. It creates too much dependency on a system with a single point of failure, and one which removes us from a basic understanding of what it takes to survive.
