It's just finding your username/email and then using a program/script to try out all possible combinations (It probably goes for more likely ones first if it's well made), there is no "great security program" in place to stop this, youtube however has realised this and has implemented captcha to stop this (They have that now if you fail to enter the correct password now, right?).
