Christmas is a depressing time of year for people that have lost loved ones, especially recently. What I love about this song is that it does shine the spark of hope, Christ Jesus.

So mama is dying and her child is spending her last moments of life in a store to BUY her something. Why doesn't someone explain to the child that spending TIME with mama would be the best gift of all?

The writer probably just sat down and said, "Most people are only happy around the holidays, so I'll write a song that'll depress the fuck out of the people." Throw in a children's choir and half-step key changes in case you don't feel manipulated enough. I turn this shit off the second it comes on the radio every year. @forgotit327 I think a lot of people have over analyzed this song and movie but I am pretty sure in when it mentions that God sent the boy, it was a figure of speech. God only sent his Son. Some people say that God must have sent their "significant other" to them and that's not true. They just happened to be in the same place at the same time. And as for "God telling people it's okay to go to war," check out Ecclesiastes 3:8.

I've been blessed in that I haven't had anyone extremely close to me die. But I know a lot of people that have, and this song speaks to them. Christmas, for a lot of people, involves remembering loved ones that have passed, hopefully to better place. But it still hurts us to have lost them, and we will miss them. Christmas is a depressing time of year for people that have lost loved ones, especially recently. What I love about this song is that it does shine the spark of hope, Christ Jesus.

@riverside1276 My bad it didn't say in the song "I knew that "Jesus" had sent that little boy" however it did say "I knew that "God" had sent that little boy" But the main thing is it is a fictional story and when you make up a fictional story about God you relegate God to the world of fiction and in that case you can make God do whatever you want in the story. Like you could have God telling people it's okay to go to war. The story is fake, it's an emotional sucker punch using the name of God.

While I respectfully accept that others like this song, I can't stand it. It's depressing. I understand the sentiment behind it, but I was horrified when I first heard it since most Christmas music I've heard is festive and fun. I've had family and friends die of cancer like everyone else.

Actually the writer of the song means that God sent the little boy to make someone realize that Christmas is not about presents but about caring. If anyone listening to this song has lost a parent they understand that the kid would do anything for his mother.

This sounds like a real contrived story and I'm glad it is because if God had the little boys mother die just so he could worry himself about (buying shoes?!) and put this man back in the Christmas spirit that would really suck.
