@kevingraves35 midges in sizes 16-24 (depending on the season) work really well (larger in the summer smaller in the winter). Also small prince nymphs, pheasant tails, biot bodies, copper johns, and hares ears all produce well year round. your best bet for a lot of fish on the swift is definitely the Hatchery pipe (some times the bubbler up at the Y-pool can produce well too). Keep trying the Assabet, in spring and fall it can be a great fishery.
I live in Northborough and fish the Swift about once a week. It's about an hours drive. I agree about the Quinnie and the Stillwater. Much closer. The Assabet runs through my back yard but I haven't had any luck there yet. Just started fly fishing this year. What size midges are you using at the Swift? I've only had luck on San Juan's and egg patterns.
@outdoors52 I keep a journal of my trips that includes what was hatching, weather etc. but the Swift is a fairly well known river, and you can find a fairly accurate hatch chart for it on the website fly fishing connection . com, and another in a book by renowned New England angler Tom Fuller.
Great fishing there i always catch large numbers at the swift... Down stream towards the hatchery pipe is the best place to go when oxygen depletes. I was fishing there that same day and only managed to pull 1 fish out of that log up towards the Y pool and it was the only fish i had seen there all day. When i had worked my way down to the hatchery pipe later that afternoon, there was another guy in your same spot at the pipe on the edge of the bank catching fish... i think he only caught 1.
Marlborough is a lot closer to the swift than where I am in Boston (about two thirds the distance) but it's farther from the mass pike so it ends up being about an hour and 10 minutes. I would recommend you check out the Assabet, Stillwater and Quinapoxet Rivers as well which are all right near Marlborough.
