Note for the cameraman, DO NOT zoom in that close on the flame without a lens on the cam. 2 mins in and it's causing a headache. Nice technique, just hard to watch closely.
this guys pretty good but how can he just stick the glass rods in the torch flame without them cracking or breaking? he just sticks um right in without warming them up. wtf
He's working with pyrex glass. It has a much higher temperature yeild point. Plus he enters the flame in the center of it not down by the torch head until he is using the larger diameter glass rods.
You might be thinking of borasiclicate glass which is what is used in large scale (hot glass) glassblowing. That type of glass will brake on any contact with drastic temperature changes.
Actually dewolfe, Pyrex is a brand name registered by Corning by incorporating thermal shock resistance into *borosilicate glass. Boro can have different c.o.e.,, this guy is using coe33, the most common among the pipe scene (called hard glass), coe90, 103, 104 (soft glasses) are mostly use for beadworking or gloryhole blowing, just to straighten a few things out. Its all boro just different coe so hard glass can resist those changes :)
@nanabassist Good explanation. There is Pyrex, Kimax, and what I like to use, Simax. All of which are borosilicate. For the people asking about why the glass doesn't crack. Same reason why Pyrex brand is known for cookware and scientific research. The glass is designed to take high and quick temperature changes. Though, stuff like the pipes at the end of this video will need to be put in a kiln periodically to prevent cracking while working. Boro, is the shit. I love working glass.
@nanabassist Cool thanks for the check on that man. I realized it about a week or so later when I made the same mistake again in a glass gallery. It now makes me question my sources as I was in a Glass Blowing Class at the time that I posted that comment and had been told the wrong info my by instructors....Yikes!....LOL. That doesn't say much for them or myself for not looking it up more thoroughly.
cuse he has a big industrial torch and not just a blow torch when u have a smaller torch then that u need to heat up the whole rod b 4 u heat it up so he some gloves
I really like the way this guy is so casual about what he is teaching. I think he could be a good teacher as he does a good job of explaining what he is doing an keeps it entertaining at the same time.
Dude, get a 4 or 6 mill graphite rod and put it on a stand parallel to your bench, you can use a piece of 2x4 and drill a hole in it and glue the rod in. Then when you have heated the 9mill and go to make the loop you just stretch it a little, pull it over the graphite rod and stick it to itself real fast. The glass thins out and is easy to break with a small flame and gives allot of control. If you sharpen the end of the rod you can use it to poke the hole open again.
dude, im a new glass blower, making "tobacco pipes", and this bit of info helped me so much, now with every 10 pipes i sales to head shoppes i sell over 100 bucks worth of necklace's to them as well, they are a better sale then pipes!!!!!!!!! thanks man! (took me a month to get it right!!!)
about a year ago i had a dry piece that had a mushroom blown in to the end of it and like, the design of it all was just very similar to your work and that particular pendant, have you sold pieces to Trail's?
Good video over all. I liked the camera angle to get a rare view from the front of the flame, and the audio and direction was very good. I'm not sure you needed such a large flame for a mushroom pendant but I guess we have our own styles. Check out my vids when you have a chance. I have a couple of special shape pipe videos and a how to make a mushroom pendant video as well. Keep the torch lit!
hey Matt, I own a custom powder coating business and I love it but just custom powder work doesn't make much money so I would like to add custom glass pendents and pipes into my business, would it be ok for me to call you and get some direction on what I should do?
Haha! That brings me back to my starting dayz...thats the first thing I learned. I banged those things out on my lynx for fuckin ever!! Good shit man!! Thanks!
dude thats neat, but you need to bust out with some more advanced shiz for us guys who know the basics.a vortex marble or somethin would be sweet,or how to drop the stem in a bub,but keep makin em and il keep watchin em

It's likely borosilicate glass, or Pyrex. Doesn't thermal shock easily.
