I go down to Otsuchi about twice a month and more often whenever possible. As part of the recovery efforts, we helped to do search and rescue, clean up, and food and aid distribution. Right now, almost a year later, Otsuchi is just... well there's something disturbing about going around the town and seeing the foundations of homes and the occasional building. I'm trying to capture it on video and trying to get the message across about the damage. But I think the videos say enough for aftermath.
Aloha from Northern Japan. The Pacific Islanders & I from Misawa Air base here in Northern Japan .. will be visiting this town within Sept. I cant wait to share our home islands with them all :C
I am amazed that you see the people just walking for higher ground. Especially after 2004, I would have been running for my life to higher ground after an earthquake and the coming tsunami. Brian, were a majority people doing just that and not filmed? Thoughts and prayers still for Japan. God bless!
Thank you for uploading this. It shows that even during a tragedy, mass panic isn't a foregone conclusion for all.
Sidenote
It's sickening to read comments of people who vilify a nation for the business practices of some. It's hypocritical and pathetically small-minded.
Want to protect dolphins, become a champion for animal rights? Good on you, but the second anyone says that humans deserve to die and get eaten as 'karma' is the second they are as morally bankrupt as they claim others to be.
Sad to see good luck to you all, Its tectonic plate movement caused by the super "perigee moon’’ magnetic pull being closest to earth for 20 years, next one will be in 2029 Plan and build stronger for then!
@malcstag it's not due to the perigee, it wasn't at the same time (close but not the same) and it would be gravitational pull not magnetic pull anyway..
Do some googling and you'll realise what I said, I'm doing geophysics at Leeds university so I'm qualified to correct you :)
I keep coming back to your videos doing my best to find stories of survivors ...I am interested in how people are dealing with enormity of this event. Your videos are the perfect evidence that one must respect the power of natural forces and the people that live in areas often affected by these forces.
When that officer pointed and said "GO" ...your video documents that you did exactly that ...being the driver (if you had ?'d...) you are living proof of responsible driver decision making
I come back to this sequence again and again. Its simple drama and tragedy is extraordinary - I'm sure many of those souls seen in the town in the early stages, running for some kind of safety as the siren wails, are no longer with us. And while the eyes are focused on the sea for signs of a tidal wave, it's already happening. The sea rises at least 2 metres in less than 2 minutes against that little island. And pre-tsunami google shows the island to be connected to the far shore by a big sea w
Hope that the fish factory workers and other people in the streets survived. You did the very right, to get the Hell out of the harbour area and up in the hills! No one can blame that you survived. You just followed the orders from the local police, to get up in the hills as quick as possible! Your video is an important document. Thank's for sharing this video, and good luck for your future. Thank your God that you did survive this terrible earthquake and tsunami!
the politeness and lack of panic of the japan people during the evacuation was impressive... sucks that the epicenter couldn't have been 20 minutes farther out , 9~ minutes is just too little time even for a prepared city
They are doing that. Apparently you missed that they are asking for help for the victims. And why do you try to turn this into a rant about whaling? This video is about about the tsunami; they are not even talking about whaling here.
I've watched other video accounts of the Tsunami and I am sure anyone who recorded the images wishes they could have helped those people that they couldn't help. I watched one video taken from a helicopter and you could see cars trying to flee and being swallowed up by the water. I am sure those in the helicopter were horrified and will deal with the trama of not being able to help those people. They were witnesses and recorded the event. That's all they could do.
I know there's nothing funny about any of this, but I had to chuckle that you missed it (Is that all under water over there?). Good video tho, the whole thing kinda creeps me out.
sorry to hear about the dolphins quote Sadly, the news out of Taiji is no better. Although it is located well away from the epicenter of the earthquake, they did experience swells from the Tsunami. We heard that all 24 dolphins being kept in sea pens died as they were thrashed against the rocky coastline. Hopefully they will not be hunted again for awhile. Have donated to the people of Japan and to an animal charity too and will probably do so again. Thanks and glad you got home ok.
To find out how to help Otsuchi, google Otsuchi relief. The city of Fort Bragg, CA is their sister city and is doing all they can to help. As of yesterday, the survivors still had little water or food and no heat. Let's pray the helpers can clear the roads and start bringing in more water today.
The tsunami waves are really blue & clear at Otsuchi 07:52. Those I see on the news or in other videos are generally murky brown or nearly black. This is so devastating. Praying for Japan
While watching the video I couldn't help but wonder what would have happened to all those people on the streets fleeing as they drove out of the city. There was an older man who was alone on the street as the car went past him. I wonder if he made it to safety.
So many people perished because they had no idea the massive Tsunami coming after the quake. So very sad.
@hrddrvto And people have asked why didn't they stop to help anyone. There was no time to do anything except for flee and try and get out alive as fast as you could. Reports are coming in that the town of Otsuchi is one of the hardest hit.
@bnvn1 Sidenote, it's hard (and potentially dangerous) to try to help anyone when you barely know what to do (where to go) and are not even sure to get out of it alive... All the locals have better knowing of the place and the procedure to follow in case of alert...

@FlyerKBOS Yes, thank you, we have already talked to several international media outlets to get the story out but feel free to pass the story along. The footage is watermarked on youtube so that it can't be used without knowning who is using it.

Did they get up on the hill or not? From this video, it looks as though they gave up on that and decided to hang around near the water. They are very lucky.
What about the dolphins? Did they head out to sea? Or, did they ride the waves in victory of not being slaughtered and eaten, or caned for later consumption. Maybe this year the dolphins are eating fisherman and a new ritual has begun. In all fairness, it is a shame to see such a beautiful place and it's people get creamed.

@avidal7 They said it was the same town, they just escaped up into the hills and barely made it before the Tsunami hit. Some people have asked about the camera work and video quality, they were more worried about escaping with their lives then the videography quality. When the firefighters that were near them on the hill climbed up the hill to get higher, they were watching what was happening and how to get out, not the view finder.

I thought it was a valuable image come close to that tell of the horrors of the tsunami. To shoot accurately in danger as it would have wisdom and courage
My son was one of the exchange students from the sister city here in Fort Bragg CA We Love you Taro Sato and the whole Sato Family and all who are there we are praying for all of you and hoping ur all safe this is horrible! We had our own evacuation since we are on the opposite side and slight damage but NOTHING like this NOTHING!
@MrOranj They were not really focusing on shooting video as much as they were focusing on getting to higher ground since the city was being destroyed. Brian said the fire fighters that were there, they took off and climbed up the hill higher still so his whole group was kind of freaking out thinking do we go higher or stay here. Video was on the back burner to staying alive.
Man at first I thought it was an area of Japan that only received like 1 foot waves, but it became clear pretty quickly that it wasn't...Hopefully everyone got to higher ground safely before it hit.
I go down to Otsuchi about twice a month and more often whenever possible. As part of the recovery efforts, we helped to do search and rescue, clean up, and food and aid distribution.

No doubt, an unforgettable experience. Japanese civil defense is second to none. That was some amazing video.

Are those birds actually fishing? If so that is crazy. Basically they waited for the water to push the fish in

I am glad that you were able to record this rather than be stuck in the flood.

津波の恐ろしさが肉迫的に分かる貴重な映像だと思いました。
危険の中これだけ的確に撮影するのは知恵と勇気がいると思います

I thought it was a valuable image come close to that tell of the horrors of the tsunami. To shoot accurately in danger as it would have wisdom and courage

" *laughs* they're taking it seriously"....... and now you know why...... good job. Nature isn't as predictable as you think now is it?

@billy9038 Actually, the tsunami was predicted pretty well ;)

you should use zoom only when necessary. why didnt you focus on the ship?
MrOranj 11 months ago
@MrOranj They were not really focusing on shooting video as much as they were focusing on getting to higher ground since the city was being destroyed. Brian said the fire fighters that were there, they took off and climbed up the hill higher still so his whole group was kind of freaking out thinking do we go higher or stay here. Video was on the back burner to staying alive.

Man at first I thought it was an area of Japan that only received like 1 foot waves, but it became clear pretty quickly that it wasn't...Hopefully everyone got to higher ground safely before it hit.
