Brava Marilyn. Horne is an amazing singer. Her coloratura is different and I like the experiment she does in this performance. Nobody has the ability to play with so much color. Really, it is amazing!.
The son took me to see Rob Zombie Marilyn has a similar effect. her voice was so powerful she could blow you back out the door! But without a mountain of amplifiers. Yes , she is great.
She's never been my favorite. There is just something about this voice that I genuinely dislike. Something I can't put my finger on really. I do, however, appreciate that she is a fantastic artist with a very, VERY fine instrument. It's just not for me. 3/3.
Her range was superhuman (top and bottom). What glorious sound! And when did she change registers? It's like a magician's trick, first she's in the top register, and then poof, she's gone elsewhere. Incredible. Marilyn was in a league all her own. What a shame I never saw her perform, and thank goodness for these recordings so we can still enjoy her.
I've yet to find a singer that can seamlessly switch between registers where I, or most any trained ear, can't hear. Just think, it could be Ewa Podles. :-)
You have to give a mezzo soprano credit for even being able to sing this aria! Ms. Horne has an incredible range. Because of this, a few of the coloratura lines scale downward instead of upward, but still, very enjoyable.
Nope. At the time of Rossini every voice was capable of coloratura. The first interpreter was Righetti-Giorgi, a contralto with a range from F to high B. Rossini wrote transpositions for soprano as well.
O really? wow. Then again my music history book had some other false info in it too, so im not that surprised that I had wrong information. lol. Thank you.
I am not trying to be sarcastic or biting, but during the course of studying a degree in musicology I will say that many, MANY music history books (especially ones that are generalized books not specific to an era or styling) are full of misinformation and malinformation and just plain unfounded and undocumented information.
Horne gives a joyous, highly musical performance with excellent, flowing coloratura. Some or her ornamentatins aren't that tasteful, but they are quite exciting. I also have to disagree with the comments about her vocal eveness.
I am not charmed by Ms. Horne's voice. It is to masculine for my taste, aspecially in this role. Also the middle en top register do not blend into each other. Rock solid voice though. And she give's her own impression of this aria. 4/4
Interesting that people aren't happy with this performance from Ms. Horne. I'm personally not hearing 3 voices from her at all, though I do hear some slight issues. Perhaps it was not a good day. I think she does a beautiful job of characterisation. The ornaments are her own, though perhaps not entirely flattering. I've heard her do them before. 4/5
While usually I don't like excessive variation from the score, somehow I think Horne does it in a very musicianly, imaginative, and exciting way. The musical line is very firm and not distorted, and her vocal and comedic acting, diction, and coloratura are a joy. 5/5
What she "can" do with her voice is amazing. I do not like waht she "chooses" tohe do.Some cadenzas are not exactly classy. She is always great fun, though! 5/4.5

confermo quanto ho già scritto
in più dico che la Bartoli, eccellente vocalista, non possiede la vocalità rossiniana di forza (Arsace, Calbo)
..la Valentini invece si, anche se aveva qualche problema sugli acuti..
saluti
mongemark 2 years ago
la voce è in alcune note ingolata ma ha due ottave e mezzo di estensione e anche la Callas aveva suoni gutturali;
Ero lì a Macerata e anche al Tancredi a Roma + vari concerti;
bye

My first opera was Barbiere di Siviglia at the Met, and SHE was Rosina. Forever spoiled me.

Is it not a characteristic of bel canto to add ornamentation?

What did she do at 4:41 and 4:43? I don't like that. The rest is perfect!
trumansf 3 years ago
its just different fioratura, she decided to sing a low B instead of a high B. Ive never heard that particualr interpretation either.

A flawless technique combined with an incomparible voice to create effortless perfection. So much color in one voice is simply amazing.

I agree she is great, but why do we have to give her credit for being able to sing this aria? It was originally written for a contralto.
sevoflurane 4 years ago
No, it was written for a mezzo-soprano with coloratura
A contralto piece wouldn't stay as high as this piece does
