  • we just call it press

  • he has some weak ass legs with that attitude

  • @live2graff88 he can squat more than you ever could though.

  • @Jstar2008Nle i think not dumbass, if he doesnt squat he is going to have weak ass legs

  • @live2graff88 but obviously he does squat so what is your point "dumbass"?

  • @Jstar2008Nle Schooled that playah.

  • Everytime i see guys doing leg presses at the gym, rip's voice is gonna be in my head...

  • you can leg press, but thats gay

  • Well here in BFE Kansas my options are very limited, so I go to the YMCA

  • anyone else think that his gym is freaking sweet! equipment galore!!!

  • @gabrielbret what gym do you go to? lol

  • @jayeffector He's strong and bulky. I think most bodybuilders are usually this way naturally because their training and diet, until its time for a photo shoot or competition when they work to get rid of excess water and body fat to expose more muscle. I'm sure he has a 6 pack it's just behind some fat. Anyways, I recommend his book to you if you want a in-depth, detailed explanation of bench press, squat, dead lift, press and power clean. there's a torrent going around if you want to preview it.

  • @JayEffector he's pretty old so he's less inclined to give a shit

but you could always do the tracy anderson method

  • @JayEffector He's a strength trainer, not a bodybuilder. You don't need 6 pack abs to be strong.

  • It is no co-incidence he looks like chuck norris

  • DERRICK ROSE MVP IS TRAINED BY MARK RIPPETOE HIMSELF???

  • It is funny that all the youtube videos where people do this, they only go down as far as their chin and up only a few inches about their head.

  • Great video, thanks for the upload.

  • Isn't it bad to lock out?

  • @rycebouy It depends of the kind of exercise. You don't always want to lock out when you got hundreds of pounds pushing against your joints.

with the press, I've never read or heard anything bad. Exercises that involve the knees however (like the gay leg press), I have.

  • The gay leg press thing makes me laugh every time :')

  • She nearly went the first push.

  • Yeah you could do this or you can just do it seated lmfao

  • @Rotatez I don't think I need to explain why but you're an idiot or a troll.

  • @Rotatez wow your just dumb...

  • that guy in the blue never gets the lifts right LOL

  • Lovely way to dislocate your shoulders.

  • @ryanwegner2010 you are quite wrong. active shoulders with retracted scapula and tight traps does not allow for shoulder dislocation that way. Actually I would think it's almost physically impossible unless your muscles and anatomy is made of paper.

  • @ryanwegner2010 LOL no.. just no. your brain would tell you to drop the weight before you dislocated anything...

  • That basset hound photo bombs all of Rippetoe's videos haha.

  • I dont get the "leg press is gay" joke...

  • @CaEdd92

    leg pressing is gay

    squating is manly

    something like that.

  • @CaEdd92 man, that leg press joke was gay... there's nothin wrong with leg press, you don't have to worry about fuckin up ur back with press instead of the squat.

  • @whitekid3 yes, but it's gay

  • @whitekid3 if you hurt your back, then you're doing it wrong.

  • @whitekid3 If you are performing the squat correctly nothing bad will happen to your back. The leg press is a waste of time if you are able to squat.

  • @vleon1012 I have no idea

  • a session with Rip is priceless. Shoulder problems from years of Bench Press were cured in a few weeks thanks to Coach Rip

  • @Ikefis yes but you have to understand that i have erection problems when i cryy after having a shit

    Thanks for your understanding

  • More great coaching from Rippetoe. I always find something useful in his videos that helps me with the next lift.

  • If you follow bodybuildingmethods advice you'll be a bodybuilder. And you'll never press over 135 pounds.

  • @bodybuildingmethod either you move your body forward (only as far as necessary, no further), or you hold it out of vertical line. there's no other way to do it. of the two, i think moving your body forward is the lesser of two evils.

secondly, the main thing that's undergoing more strain when you lock out your arms in a press is your elbow joint. the amount you're pressing (110, 150, etc.) isn't going to hurt those. Otherwise you'd injure yourself every time you did a bench press.

  • @peacerenity Can someone else comfirm this? I mean. You loose all your tension by "locking" the bar. Isn't that a way of cheating? Just asking since I was taught otherwise :)

  • @Stjarnor Well I guess the first thing to note is that when you lock out and loose some of your tension, it actually makes the exercise harder (both because you have to re-tense and you're under the bar longer), so it's actually the opposite of cheating.

As far as why this is preferred to the continuous load, continual movement style, my best guess is that this uses less momentum (so it's harder) and the end-point of the exercise is much clearer, thus making it more difficult to cheat.

  • @peacerenity Hmm.. the argument that locking actually makes it harder, is hard to belive. Mostly since even a second of rest (under locking) is enough to get a small loadoff, whilst keeping a muscle tensioned (take static tension for exampel) strains the strenght and endurance more. Would you not agree?

  • @Stjarnor I'm not sure about the press, but I know that I've done squats two ways: one where I lock my legs and take a few breaths at the top between reps, and another where I just bang out the reps quickly and continuously. The second is easier for me.

For the press, one thing to consider is that when your arms are locked out at the top, it's really only your triceps that are resting. Your shoulders are still working, and that's usually what gives out first for me.

  • @peacerenity Well, not entirely your triceps. Your skeletal-parts (don't know the english word for it, sorry :/) is the parts where most of the load is moved to. Think about it. Your shoulder joint is the one taking the most "weight" whilst resting, which I do not think a physiotherapist would recommend, since shoulderjoints and alike are quite easily damaged.

Considering your squats, have you tried working slower at the eccentric part? This is where you most easily develop strenght.

  • @Stjarnor

no need to wonder about it. just get a bar, take the heaviest weight you can lift for one rep, raise it above your head and lock it for as long as you can. then tell me how easy it was on your shoulders, because they were "resting" while the bar was 'locked' on the top.

yet the triceps lose a great poartion of tension when the elbows are locked, but since they're not the prime targets here, that's fine i guess.

  • @Mahassiah It's absolutly 100% easier than having the muscles taking all the static load. That's the diffrence. I wan't to work-out my muscles, not cheat 'em.

  • @Stjarnor

ok, I'm not arguing about which is "easier". I'm just saying that your shoulders won't rest with the bar locked on top.

so, I see no problem in locking elbows in this exercise.

  • What muscles does that press work at?

  • @MarkusAir2000 Shoulders

  • so wish i went to rips gym.. the staff in mine don't know shit aha

  • These people clearly have no idea what they're doing.

  • @13andincrediblycut Everybody has to start somewhere.

  • Messam pig panno. Sib.

  • @ccjuju why comment about strength not being a big deal on what is essentially a powerlifters post?! wtf?

  • @ccjuju I wouldn't shoot Rip... you'd just make him angry.

  • @ccjuju : Someone's a jelly fat neckbeard.

  • "See how close you can get it to your nose - You'll only hit it once..." Gotta love it!

  • @ccjuju Because he is a former champion powerlifter and has coached many more later champions from the rookie stage than most people can even think of.

  • @ccjuju i'm pretty sure he could rip you in half. he's 51 now but in his prime he could easily deadlift 600. i highly doubt you can do anything close to that

  • call it preyyyysss

  • there's a dog walking around back there haha

  • i think air squat guy wanted to be in the video.

  • he couldnt find a better place to do his squats than that? lol, he must have been embarassed when he realized that he wasnt supposed to be there.

  • LMAO...you could leg press, but that's gay?! Too funny...

  • @evodevo69 It's not funny to be sexist.

  • isn't locking out bad for your elbow joints?? i thought with any exercise, you should always go shy of lock out?!

  • thats what faggot trainers tell you

  • @BeanerIsland ... could you at least elaborate, so we can lear why?

  • @lm1503 That's mostly with biceps, because the weight will be going in the opposite direction of what your elbow is capable of. With this exercise that is not the case, say the weight is too heavy, your arms wouldnt go beyond lock, but would just unlock. With bicep if the weight is too heavy, you'd go beyond your lock and break it off. Pretty bad explanation, I'm sorry for that :$

  • hmmm, maybe it really isn't a problem locking out with these types of exercises where youre not forcing your joint into an unnatural direction. that said, at that moment of lockout, you are essentially directing the full load from flexible, shock absorbing muscle to the joint. i think ill go just shy of lockout because im certainly not making it any easier for myself by doing this and i'm not risking joint degradation in the process.

  • @lm1503 You're using your muscles to lock it out anyway..

  • @Abdullah2009 .. and that ain't true.

  • @lm1503 Sounds reasonable.

  • @Abdullah2009 Yeah that made NO sense whatsoever dude

  • if that were true gymnasts wouldn't be so stinkin strong.

  • @lm1503 in body building lockout is shunned because of the desire to maintain tension on the muscle. Joints were made to support weight. Although some joints are not load bearing, and care should be taken when working these joints. This is why technique is most important in these areas. It's funny people will tell you it's okay to trash your soulders with the bench press, but ohhhh don't lock out your elbows..lol

  • I love how guy loses his spotlight at 0:13.

    Pretty embarrassing.

  • what do you mean?

  • @xentech well, this guy stands right behind the woman and starts doing his freehand squats, looking like an idiot, why did he go right up behind her, into the scene? It was just weird that's all. Riptoe is instructing her, not him and it's like he tried to but in, that's all. ahhh nevermind! lol

  • @witch2eyes Why that guy did his squats right behind her? Guess he recognized Rippetoe and understood this video was going to the Internet. A desperate try to get famous.

  • rofl he's like hmm am i really supposed to be here? then uncomrtably walks away trying to act casual

  • there's a weird/old dog inside at 1:53 lol

  • @nexticeage who the f*ck has a dog in the GYM. Heard about allergies?! Oh, wait.. that's also gay.

  • @medieteknik Seeing eye spotter for blind lifters.

  • Wow, I've been watching these vids by Rippertoe for the last half hour and I've learnt SO much important information.

  • read starting strength

  • me too! I'm loving this exercise and I can't wait to try it! :-)

  • He's right leg press is gay. Hate that machine so much lol

  • 0:13

  • "You could leg press, but that's gay." Rip is the best!

  • yeah that was cute.

  • "You'll only hit it once." lol rippetoe's awesome
