@sgchaffin I know, still makes me sick too, also we lost superbowl XVI for one yard. History could have been a lot different today. GO BENGALS!!!!!!!!!!!
@anepales Yep just goes to show you that chance is the only difference between the the great players and the good players. Imagine what people would be saying if Tracy Porter dropped the interception thrown by Manning in the latest superbowl and Manning scored a touchdown instead.
this is the first Super Bowl I ever watched (I was 11); what a well-played game. in my opinion, the Bengals were the better team that season, but the 49ers had the greatest players.
Even if that play was intercepted theres no guarantee that wud of ended the game, the score was 13-6 at the time wit about a full quarter of football 2 b played cincy wud of had their 7 point lead n the ball but theres no guarantee they wud of drove down 2 make it a 2 score game n if they did there stil wud of been a gud amount of time 4 Montana 2 rally Dnt get me wrong that was a HUGE drop of odds r that didnt utimately cost cincy that ball game theres jus 2 much time and anythin cud of happen
@temple76502 Yes it would have because with the "TIME" remaing on the clock, all the Bengals had to do was run out the clock. They had big enough offensive lineman to at least run one play, unless, the same thing would have happened to Esiason as did to danny white in the 81 "The Catch" game, or what happened to the Bengals on a Sam Wyche missed call. Remember, the 49ERS could do things with seconds remaining, except call stupid plays like against the Giants in the, was it 15 to 12 game?
This play happened right before John Taylor caught the winning TD pass with less than 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. So there would not have been much time left. All the Bengals would have had to do is maybe make one first down and run out the clock.
One of my best friends from the University of North Alabama, he was always an awesome friend, and a great defensive back, with super 4.2 speed, was very real, along with his ability to read receivers! I love him and I miss him! Arm chair athlete will always be haters, cause they didn't go as far as he did, losers! My friend had his faults, but, he was never a hater! His mistake in this game, was just that, a mistake, in a game, just a game! Sports are for our amusement and entertainment!
to the author. I doubt it would have made that much of a difference in Billups life if he had made the Int. He was a bad human being who was blessed with enough athletic ability to play sports at the highest level. I'll never forget what my best friends uncle told me once when I was a kid. His name was Ron Hormsby and he played MLB for the Giants in the early 70's. He told me if it weren't for football, 1/4 of his teammates would be in prison.
I wonder what would Montanas legacy would be if Billups doesn't drop that pass? What about Bradshaw if Jackie Smith catches that pass from Staubach in superdowl 13? Both would have one loss in the big game instead of perfect 4-0 records.
@kingfish4242 Montana wouldn't have made that big comeback drive, they wouldn't have won 3 superbowls that decade, and wouldn't be the team of the decade, and Montana probably wouldn't be regarded as such a great player. I think he was great because his team was.
@weirdplacefilms I agree about Montana> he was definitely a great Qb,but I still consider Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr better leaders. The Niners needed a bit of luck to defeat the bengals in SB 16 as well. if Bengals RB Charles Alexander runs the correct route on 4th and Goal, the Bengals take the lead, instead, his error led to the legendary goal line stand. I also believe Jerry Rice was the best player on those Niner teams. he just might be the best football player of all time
@kingfish4242 Yeah, that's what I was thinking. In 1988 they struggled to beat Cincinnati even when their star lineman got injured early. Imagine if Krumrie didn't get injured, and Billups intercepted that pass... Oh my god, I'd be such a happy Bengals fan. Yet here I am, hating the crap out of the Jets, Steelers, and Niners for dashing any hope of the Bengals getting a superbowl...
@kingfish4242 - I have a hard time thinking of Jerry Rice as "the best football player of all time". Best wide-receiver of all-time - yes, but not "best football player". I don't know, I just think that to be the best football player - your playing style has to fit the gritty, blue-collar image that football propagates. Jerry was too "finese", too "pretty-boy", too much of a diva. To me, he was much more of a wide-receiver than he was a "football player".
@idster7 probably so,but we'll never really know for sure.I remember watching that game as a 16 year old kid. When Smith dropped the pass, you could see the air go out of the dallas offense. They didn't get back in gear until it was 35-17 Steelers,by then it was too late.
Samuel dropped it and the whole world seen it. The pass may have been a bit high, but he really just mistimed his jump. He failed as did the rest of the Patriots defense on that drive.
Listen up folks..........................this was the closest montana ever came to an interception in a 122 pass completions in superbowl play! for all the critics, its about playing the best when the most is on the line! Greatness is when your protection(offensive line) says "Im sure glad montana is on our team" jesse suppolu. nough said!
Easy to say when you have a sold o-line, mult. pro-bowlers on 'd' like Lott, and Jerry Rice to throw to. Like to see what Joe would've done with the receivers Favre's had over the years. Other than Reggie White, what HOFers did Farve play with? Joe had a lot of help. Take away that level of help & you have Joe in KC. Plus, he played the Bears vs. Steve Fuller, not McMahon, & this guy drops an easy pick. And look at who Simms had to throw to, or Brady pre-Moss.
Fortune does play a role in winning so much. Joe was great, but he had a lot of top quality help. Other qbs have won it all with much less on offense.
Yea, especially in 84 when he had ummmm, let me see i know they were 15-1 and ummm rice was uhhh no, ummm brent jones yea uhhhh no, well i know taylor was on, uhhhhh no suppolo....uh no well freddie solomon was uhh not there. hmmmm 15-1 and that team still is considered to have all those players and yet it doesnt. craig for the double 1000. Your right montana like in 82 had all the Hall of famers. Favre? riddlen boy? what is the point at that comparison?
Jerry was great, Joe was great, Roger Craig, Taylor, the o-line, they were all great because they made one another better. This whole "Joe had lots of help" argument is bullshit. Bradshaw, Aikman, all the greats had lots of help. Ever stop to think maybe these QBs made the guys around them better?
The very next play Montana hit Rice for a 13-13 tie.
Cincy got a FG after that and lead 16-13 then Joe lead the 92 yd drive to win 20-16.
Had Billups hung on to the int then it would ahve stayed 13-6 Bengles more thanlikely they would have still gotten the FG and lead 16-6 and Joe's drive would have been meaningless.
I'm a Steelers fan so i could care less about Cincinnatti but they say Montana never threw an int in a SB, now we know why.
I was at the Vikes game, I'm on here becasue as musch as I dislike Cincy, I only didlike them grom a rivalry standpoint, unlike Cleveland who Ihate period.
To live a couple of blocks away from Bob Trumpy and Bob Johnson in Glendale, Ohio, to go to elementary school with Katie, and to have gotten to know Boobie when he was alive and married to my cousin, are and were great memories. When they lose games they should have won like today's game vs. Denver, it hurts even more. I believe they will get it together one day, but WHEN?
CincinnatiNick25, I want to cry when I see this, too. I am just holding onto the belief that the Bengals will win a Super Bowl before I pass away. I am 45, and I am in pretty good health. I just want to live to see them win AT LEAST ONE SUPER BOWL. If they win more, that will be icing on the cake. I actually KNOW people associated with the team. I went to school when Bob Trumpy's son Matt, and Paul Brown's granddaughter Katie Blackburn. Former running back Boobie Clark was an in-law.
the niners tied the game on the next play. then on the next drive jim breech kicks a field goal and the bengals take the lead. after that the niners go on the game wining drive and i think jerry rice makes the td catch.
yeah, Smith's catching that pass would've made a big difference, but I think the bigger play was the pass interference call against Charlie Waters. It was a horrible call. They're feet got tangled up as both were looking for the pass, but it wasn't intentional tripping. Of course, Swann cries like a baby & gets pissed if you disagree with him. I know, cuz I tried it. He was a real dick about it. That play kept their drive alive instead of forcing a punt. It led to a td. Take that away....?
Although this would have been a big stop for the Bengals,- they couldn't stop the Niners from marching 92 yards to win the game. Billups should have caught that easily,- but instead gets burned by Rice on the very next play......Ouch.
"What a thing to think about for the rest of your life...he catches that ball, and football history would be so different."
Absolutely.Overall, despite all the hype this game gets it wasn't really very exciting as far as offense goes. This pass should've been picked off, no question about it.
I agree with you though , I forgot about joe montana in this game...I was sitting around with friends 10 years later and someone said "hey remember superbowl 23 " I said hell yeah boy what a pass that billups dropped wheeeeww .....that game was 1 for the books. I thought to myself yea....that was the game that ended in dramatic fashion....the guy said yea it was a dramatic seen at the end showing krumrie in hospital with broken leg.Boy! was that game dramatic. never forget that billups greatness
In superbowl's theres a lot of almost plays and we shoulda's. I even hear merlin olsen say "he had it". Well, history tells us different and the only thing he had was a second place check coming to the second winner.....because if you were beat by the niners in the superbowl your not really a loser unless your name is elway and marino, boomer, or anderson or that fella on san diego. Actually i gotta say there winners except the raping in sb24 geez 55-10 and montana went out 2 min into the 4th.
The point is that the 49ers LOSE this Super Bowl if not for that play. Before you claim Montana never made mistakes...he was benched in favor of Steve Young in the previous years playoffs.See Anthony Carter. Wow-it seems to me 38 yr-old Doug Williams & Phil Simms had great games against that same "legendary" Bronco defense.Keep it in persepective.Montana was great in SB's, but he wasn't unbeatable in post-season play. You can't arbitrarily block out big games where he didn't play great.
yea i agree, i like montana, but i think he is vastly overrated about his post season play, 49-3 loss to the giants, 17-3 to the giants, 36-24 to the 8-7 vikings, 13-12 to the giants
he had plenty of shitty postseason games, and by all means he should have lost this superbowl, but he didn't, so u have to call him the greatest of all time
Yes he did have average games....But do not forget the games that got him to a superbowl. The 82 championship game in which he overcame terrible turnovers and interceptions. The bears game in which he destroyed the rugged 46 defense. The games that you said he was average he was also knocked out of or coming off back surgery....remember in those days you could kill the qb. Montana is the example of coming back and overcoming....nough said! BTW do you remember the cotton bowl? chicken soup?
Don't forget Eric Wright barely preventing Drew Pearson from scoring the winning TD though,at the end of the '81 title game on a pass from Danny White.BTW...under todays rules that's a "horse collar" tackle.Drew was just about gone & The Catch wouldn't have would've been a sidenote at best.
To give a famous quote from joe: "You just beat Americas Team asshole" Ed jones. "well you can sit at home and watch the superbowl on tv with the rest of america" Joe montana. The superbowl is the standard.......perfect record for a perfect leader! I remember a great game by timmie smith.......a man not a damn soul would remember if it was not for 204 yards in guess what "the superbowl".
And since you're such a 49er lover you should recall what Ronnie Lott said: "If not for that tackle we would've been the ones watching the Super Bowl."- Montana was great, I don't think anyone disputes that. But last time I checked TEAMS, not qb's by themselves, win SB's.
actually i like the ravens , not really any perticular teams "lover". My wife is the only person i would consider a "lover". I Am pretty sure what wins superbowls. I find it ironic that the 49ers in 84 had a very similier record as "da bears" great team in 85 15-1 but all people remember is 46 defense. The defense was great combined with an offense that was designed to keep opposing offense on the sideline makes for a great team......Glad montana "managed " the game for the niners.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I rank joe montana around the same as rich gannon, doug williams, trent dilfer....these guys were great at managing games but montana was really lucky to have everyone else on the field be stars and win the games he just said " Hey you here...catch the ball" and of course they said like t.o "who can make a play i can" joe said sheeeet betta you den me mutta fugger.......
being sarcastic fella................have been a devouted fan since 80'. I think I know a little about football and i really enjoy people trying to find a way to discard montana to the likes of the new "game manager" quarterbacks. Montana-unitas-graham. I dont care for any other qb discussions. The game is about winning championships. Thats all it is and ever will be "the rings" bitches..........................
Having been a devout fan since 1962, you are wise beyond your limited experience to include Unitas and Graham. I didn't get to see Graham play, but he must have been excellent. However since this is a team sport and there are other factors to winning championships besides having a good QB, I have great respect for the "ringless" Marino, Fouts, Jurgensen, Tarkenton. They are every bit as good as the "multi-ringed" Staubach, Bradshaw and Aikman.
Joe Montana gets a lot of credit for leading the 49ers in this drive, but few people mention the fact that he made a mistake that should have cost them the game.
he made a mistake..... what? the very next play he hit rice for a touchdown.... they gave montana a second chance and he burned billups. I look at it as billups made the mistake that cost them the game. Joe montana has thrown 122 receptions in superbowl play and never thrown an interception. I am curious as to the mistakes your talking about! The only mistake montana has made is not getting his 4 rings polished more frequently!
"Joe Montana gets a lot of credit for leading the 49ers in this drive, but few people mention the fact that he made a mistake that should have cost them the game"
Yup.I'm sure Steeler fans everywhere wish they could've been let off the hook like that & have Larry Brown drop just one of the two picks in XXX thrown right to him.Fact is though, turnovers (both missed & made) often come up big.
I think it's a lot harder for defensive backs to catch passes thrown from the opposing QB- the QB throws the ball on a trajectory to make it as easy as possible for the wide receiver to catch, not the DB. The WRs are in a better position to make the catch - & if DBs are going to catch the ball, they have to do it from odd angles, time their catch perfectly, & catch a ball that was designed to go to the other guy, not him.
I can understand why a lot of DBs end up dropping those passes.
only on certain throws. that throw should've been caught. think deion sanders would've dropped that one. deion actually caught one like that at the end of the bowl game in jan 1989 in the end zone.
Oh my GOD, that would have been his only INT in the SUPERBOWL EVER (Montanas) and probably gave them the win in this game! I wonder how many years that haunted him for, at the moment he was thinking okay we will get em next time and still have a shot to win this one, afterwards I bet it haunted dude for years.
I believe Billups dropped another possible interception deep in cincinnati's red zone. On the very next play, Montana threw a touchdown pass to Jerry Rice which helped tie the game at that point. That was a 14 point swing that along with Boomer Esiason's arm injury doomed Cincinnati.
sports will always have "what ifs". what if ronnie lott doesnt put that hit on woods early in the game? woods may have a good game. what if taylor drops it in the end zone? what if what if
Man, Montana has been lucky in his career. If that play, or the Drew Pearson play at the end of the 81 NFC Championship goes the wrong way, he wouldn't be considered as great. I still don't think he is the best ever anyway. Bill Walsh made him what he was. And, Mike, you might be right about Billups. That might be the NFL equivalent to the homer that Donnie Moore gave up in the 86 ALCS with one strike to go. If Billups catches that, his life probably would have been different.
Yup, and if the refs doesn't make those two bad pass interference calls against Ronnie Lott in the '83 nfc championship or if Roger Craig doesn't make that fumble in the '90 nfcc, Montana would've gotten his rings.
Offset that with your "what if" scenarios and Montana still would be the greatest.
He should have tried to find God or something after his career and straighten things out, it seems that really did wreck his life, and for what? A sport as important as it seems right now really means nothing, easy to say I know but damn your family needs you. RIP.
I don't buy that this one play wrecked his life. If he let a play on a football field impact him *that* much, then he was already very unstable and fragile. I think he was already headed in the wrong direction even before this game was played. His violence (mainly against women), anger issues, & self-destructive tendencies were more deeply-rooted - & had manifested long before Superbowl XXIII. *These* traits were what did him in, not a dropped pass.
You are probably right, it helped the wreck of which was his life go even further in the wrong direction, but he had problems anyways like you said regardless.
This game killed the spirit for my city. Very little known trivia...we were missing our first string starter because he was out getting coked up. What a loser.
.. sad, but true, (Stanley Wilson) was found in the shower of his hotel room, curled up in the fetal position after going on a crack binge.. the biggest game of the guy's career.. but I have to believe (even tho' I was rooting for the Bengals) Montana would've still found a way to win this game, with or without Cincy havin' Wilson on the field ? it was a heartbreaker.
I hate to see people be judgmental of drug addicts. Drug addiction is a horrible beast that control you- Wilson simply had structures in his brain that made him more vulnerable to addiction. And the '80s were all about doing hard-core "recreational" drugs like cocaine - and cocaine is an extremely potent addictive substance. Wilson was a victim of the '80s drug culture, & a victim of his mental wiring.
if you really think about it, if he had intercepted that pass, and the bengals marched all the way down the field and scored a TD, while using a huge junk of time, we could have won that game...:(
I remember crying over two football games in my life, and this is one of them. The first Bengals-Niners Super Bowl is the other one. It's just too bad the passing offense went south for the Bengals that entire postseason. Boomer actually had less than 100 yards passing against Buffalo in the AFC title game. It was largely due to the fact the league prohibited them from using the no huddle offense. Small consolation that this was one of the greatest Super Bowls ever I suppose.
Going into that game I was a Bengals fan. After THAT play I knew the 49'ers where going to win, they did and I'm glad they did. From that day on I became a 49'ers fan and haven't looked back since. I didn't necessarily dislike the 49'ers prior to the Super Bowl so the transition for me was easy. So what if they suck now? They gave me a long time of good memories while Cincy gave me heart ache. Go 49'ers!
I miss you Lewis Billups, ur friend Cordell Billups.. God bless your family and soul.. And because of you thats why I've been a dedicated fan since 88. a lot of bad sundays but we have turned it around a whole lot. We need defense and get out of free jail cards
lewis was a good person,he just had a very tough upbringing. he played with a chip on his shoulder and is one of the most under rated CBs in history. i own one of billups' game worn jerseys,it's a customised away jersey from the 89 season. RIP Lewis Billups. it's better to burn out than to fade away.
This play actually occurred in the first minute of the 4th quarter. The Bengals were up 13-6...and indeed, Jerry Rice scored on the following play. Strange to say, you can thank the Montana magic in part to their placekicker Mike Cofer. After Rice's TD, the Bengals gave the ball back to the Niners, who marched right down the field and set up a long field goal try for Cofer. But Cofer missed, and that led to the Bengals' go-ahead field goal with 3:20 left. The rest is history.
Even if Billups makes the INT, that doesn't necessarily mean the Cincy wins. If I remember correctly, there was still about 5 minutes to play and the Bengals, for some reason, were playing unbelievably conservative the entire game, especially late when they had the lead. S.F. had all but stopped the run at this point in the game and still had two time-outs. They would have almost certainly gotten the ball back and Montana, more than likely, would have worked his magic anyway.
Perhaps. But it WAS Montana and the guy was money in big games. As much of a downer as this play was, I think Cincy's real problem was Wyche and Coslet being so conservative. During the season they constantly opened it up, using run/play-action to stretch the field. Once the playoffs began they went conservative. Almost let Seattle come back in the divisional playoff by being so conservative, and completely tanked in SB XXIII. Don't forget - the offense didn't get in the end zone.
This goes to show you how little margin there is for error in football. I'm not saying with certainty the Bengals would have won had he caught the ball, but let's just say the odds would have been on their side. As I recall, this occurred with around 6 minutes or so remaining and the Bengals up 13-6. The Niners wound up tying the game a few plays after this drop.

I wonder what would Montanas legacy would be if Billups doesn't drop that pass? What about Bradshaw if Jackie Smith catches that pass from Staubach in superdowl 13? Both would have one loss in the big game instead of perfect 4-0 records.
kingfish4242 2 years ago
@kingfish4242 Montana wouldn't have made that big comeback drive, they wouldn't have won 3 superbowls that decade, and wouldn't be the team of the decade, and Montana probably wouldn't be regarded as such a great player. I think he was great because his team was.
Wierdplaceflms 2 years ago
@weirdplacefilms I agree about Montana> he was definitely a great Qb,but I still consider Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr better leaders. The Niners needed a bit of luck to defeat the bengals in SB 16 as well. if Bengals RB Charles Alexander runs the correct route on 4th and Goal, the Bengals take the lead, instead, his error led to the legendary goal line stand. I also believe Jerry Rice was the best player on those Niner teams. he just might be the best football player of all time
kingfish4242 2 years ago
@kingfish4242 Yeah, that's what I was thinking. In 1988 they struggled to beat Cincinnati even when their star lineman got injured early. Imagine if Krumrie didn't get injured, and Billups intercepted that pass... Oh my god, I'd be such a happy Bengals fan. Yet here I am, hating the crap out of the Jets, Steelers, and Niners for dashing any hope of the Bengals getting a superbowl...
Wierdplaceflms 2 years ago
@kingfish4242 - I have a hard time thinking of Jerry Rice as "the best football player of all time". Best wide-receiver of all-time - yes, but not "best football player". I don't know, I just think that to be the best football player - your playing style has to fit the gritty, blue-collar image that football propagates. Jerry was too "finese", too "pretty-boy", too much of a diva. To me, he was much more of a wide-receiver than he was a "football player".

BIGRED224FOREVER 2 years ago 3
Easy to say when you have a sold o-line, mult. pro-bowlers on 'd' like Lott, and Jerry Rice to throw to. Like to see what Joe would've done with the receivers Favre's had over the years. Other than Reggie White, what HOFers did Farve play with? Joe had a lot of help. Take away that level of help & you have Joe in KC. Plus, he played the Bears vs. Steve Fuller, not McMahon, & this guy drops an easy pick. And look at who Simms had to throw to, or Brady pre-Moss.
Ldale11 2 years ago
Fortune does play a role in winning so much. Joe was great, but he had a lot of top quality help. Other qbs have won it all with much less on offense.
Ldale11 2 years ago
Yea, especially in 84 when he had ummmm, let me see i know they were 15-1 and ummm rice was uhhh no, ummm brent jones yea uhhhh no, well i know taylor was on, uhhhhh no suppolo....uh no well freddie solomon was uhh not there. hmmmm 15-1 and that team still is considered to have all those players and yet it doesnt. craig for the double 1000. Your right montana like in 82 had all the Hall of famers. Favre? riddlen boy? what is the point at that comparison?
BIGRED224FOREVER 2 years ago 3
Jerry was great, Joe was great, Roger Craig, Taylor, the o-line, they were all great because they made one another better. This whole "Joe had lots of help" argument is bullshit. Bradshaw, Aikman, all the greats had lots of help. Ever stop to think maybe these QBs made the guys around them better?
jpete3027666 2 years ago 5
The very next play Montana hit Rice for a 13-13 tie.
Cincy got a FG after that and lead 16-13 then Joe lead the 92 yd drive to win 20-16.
Had Billups hung on to the int then it would ahve stayed 13-6 Bengles more thanlikely they would have still gotten the FG and lead 16-6 and Joe's drive would have been meaningless.
I'm a Steelers fan so i could care less about Cincinnatti but they say Montana never threw an int in a SB, now we know why.

idster7 2 years ago
yeah, Smith's catching that pass would've made a big difference, but I think the bigger play was the pass interference call against Charlie Waters.

BIGRED224FOREVER 3 years ago
The point is that the 49ers LOSE this Super Bowl if not for that play. Before you claim Montana never made mistakes...he was benched in favor of Steve Young in the previous years playoffs.See Anthony Carter. Wow-it seems to me 38 yr-old Doug Williams & Phil Simms had great games against that same "legendary" Bronco defense.Keep it in persepective.Montana was great in SB's, but he wasn't unbeatable in post-season play. You can't arbitrarily block out big games where he didn't play great.
333CLEAR 3 years ago
yea i agree, i like montana, but i think he is vastly overrated about his post season play, 49-3 loss to the giants, 17-3 to the giants, 36-24 to the 8-7 vikings, 13-12 to the giants
he had plenty of shitty postseason games, and by all means he should have lost this superbowl, but he didn't, so u have to call him the greatest of all time
silverandblackman1 3 years ago
Yes he did have average games....But do not forget the games that got him to a superbowl. The 82 championship game in which he overcame terrible turnovers and interceptions. The bears game in which he destroyed the rugged 46 defense. The games that you said he was average he was also knocked out of or coming off back surgery....remember in those days you could kill the qb. Montana is the example of coming back and overcoming....nough said! BTW do you remember the cotton bowl? chicken soup?
SpinLover1973 3 years ago
Don't forget Eric Wright barely preventing Drew Pearson from scoring the winning TD though,at the end of the '81 title game on a pass from Danny White.BTW...under todays rules that's a "horse collar" tackle.Drew was just about gone & The Catch wouldn't have would've been a sidenote at best.

To give a famous quote from joe: "You just beat Americas Team asshole" Ed jones. "well you can sit at home and watch the superbowl on tv with the rest of america" Joe montana. I remember a great game by timmie smith.......a man not a damn soul would remember if it was not for 204 yards in guess what "the superbowl".
BIGRED224FOREVER 3 years ago
And since you're such a 49er lover you should recall what Ronnie Lott said: "If not for that tackle we would've been the ones watching the Super Bowl."- Montana was great, I don't think anyone disputes that. But last time I checked TEAMS, not qb's by themselves, win SB's.
333CLEAR 3 years ago
actually i like the ravens , not really any perticular teams "lover".

I dont care for any other qb discussions. The game is about winning championships. Thats all it is and ever will be "the rings" bitches..........................
SpinLover1973 2 years ago
Having been a devout fan since 1962, you are wise beyond your limited experience to include Unitas and Graham. I didn't get to see Graham play, but he must have been excellent. However since this is a team sport and there are other factors to winning championships besides having a good QB, I have great respect for the "ringless" Marino, Fouts, Jurgensen, Tarkenton. They are every bit as good as the "multi-ringed" Staubach, Bradshaw and Aikman.

I can understand why a lot of DBs end up dropping those passes.
svetaswan 3 years ago
Also...if DBs were better at catching balls, they'd be WRs.

Oh my GOD, that would have been his only INT in the SUPERBOWL EVER (Montanas) and probably gave them the win in this game! onblock7 3 years ago
I believe Billups dropped another possible interception deep in cincinnati's red zone. On the very next play, Montana threw a touchdown pass to Jerry Rice which helped tie the game at that point. That was a 14 point swing that along with Boomer Esiason's arm injury doomed Cincinnati.
fairnorth 3 years ago
that wasn't a 14 point swing. it was a 7 point swing. the bengals would've only gotten the ball at the 20.

If Billups catches that, his life probably would have been different.
a7b7c78 3 years ago 2
Yup, and if the refs doesn't make those two bad pass interference calls against Ronnie Lott in the '83 nfc championship or if Roger Craig doesn't make that fumble in the '90 nfcc, Montana would've gotten his rings.
Offset that with your "what if" scenarios and Montana still would be the greatest.
meathead2001 3 years ago

I don't buy that this one play wrecked his life. If he let a play on a football field impact him *that* much, then he was already very unstable and fragile. I think he was already headed in the wrong direction even before this game was played. His violence (mainly against women), anger issues, & self-destructive tendencies were more deeply-rooted - & had manifested long before Superbowl XXIII. *These* traits were what did him in, not a dropped pass.

SuperBowlExpert 4 years ago
Even if Billups makes the INT, that doesn't necessarily mean the Cincy wins. If I remember correctly, there was still about 5 minutes to play and the Bengals, for some reason, were playing unbelievably conservative the entire game, especially late when they had the lead. S.F. had all but stopped the run at this point in the game and still had two time-outs. They would have almost certainly gotten the ball back and Montana, more than likely, would have worked his magic anyway.

Don't kid yourself. The Bengals win that one if he makes that pic....
mikeschiefer 4 years ago

This is true...So I guess we will never know for sure. But most Bengal fans believe that they win this one.
