  • Word of advice to any future climbers.

No matter how scared you get, NEVER grab someone elses rope. Trust your belay. If you don'r trust your belay, then don't climb.

A friend of mine got pulled off of a face at Araps because some kid got scared, abandoned the rock and grabbed onto his rope, pulling him down and ripping his fingers to shreds. He had a good belay so after a few weeks he was ok.

The last I saw of the kid, he got down ok, but his face was like a stunned mullet.

  • @verticalsmurf thanks for the words of confidence, im going there in two days

  • @BridgetandLaura - It is a beautiful place. Seing Araps first thing in the morning is just awesome (camera?) It is the best place to learn to climb, it is beautiful rock. Move with your hands and arms, and lift your weight with your legs. If your arms feel pumped and you can't hang on, trust your belay, yell 'letting go' , count to 3 and let go - don't grab someone else's rope. If you can't trust your belay, don't go up! But it is the most beautiful site up there.

  • @verticalsmurf yeah, i didnt die (: it was good.

  • @BridgetandLaura Glad you had a good time. What did you tick off?

  • @verticalsmurf oh well since it was my first time climbing the hardest one i did was about an 11 (:

we did do the "rock journey" though, and absailed down 40m!!

  • @BridgetandLaura - Looks like your group did the Bard, the Organ Pipes and Mitre Rock. Horrible weather for camping and climbing. Did you enjoy abseiling? Personally I love it, locking off, and looking around, knowing that no-one else will see what you are seing. It's a beautiful, tradgic and awesome moment.

Next challenge, Sweet Dreams near Katoomba, It's a five pitch grade 13, but it's an easy 13, if you can climb a weird ladder, you can do SDs.

    Rock on little smurf!

  • @BridgetandLaura - First time climbing and taking on an 11 is pretty sweet! Did you abseil off the outside of the rock and below an overhang? Did you get a chance to scramble on the inside of the mountain?

My first lead was on Trapeze (I think it is a 14) and I got my hair caught in the Sherrif, that was pretty scary, but one of my mates free-climbed and sorted me out. Here I was, proud that I lead that climb, but one of my mates did it without ropes to free me from my stupid mistake!

  • @BridgetandLaura Awesome!

  • @BridgetandLaura - And if you get the chance to scramble - go for it!

  • Nice trip. Good video. Sorry for the music. copyright sucks. I used to climb in Brazil. Now only MTB and paraglider ... see my last video on a MTB trip to a national flight contest ...
