  • Great to see these guys play this live!

  • The concentration that Dave Greenfield needed to play that must have been so intense

  • holy heavens . I love this song. It transcends all grammer issues for goodness sakes.

  • Warning: Trojan detected playing the harpsichord.

  • Hey Jackwad, the spelling is deliberate and finely tuned which has clearly escaped your simplistic understanding. Now, ask your teacher and see if spelling can ever be described as 'disgusting,' then check the grammar of your post and remove the comma in your sentence. After doing this please reflect on yourself and your comment and ask yourself: by the dictionary's definition, who out of the two of us is the real idiot.

  • bouring

  • @pierretakal

Your spelling is disgusting, and you're an idiot.

  • @charmiancharm i noticed...

  • in the beginning the vocalist looks highly sad or depressed - like he's not up for singing this song once again

  • A beautifully paced song - complex, yet sweetly engaging. Rare indeed!

  • nonostante la bellezza degli altri brani degli Stranglers, Golden Brown a mio avviso resyera` sempre il Masterpiece della band.

  • when a band makes heroin one of its selling points I lose interest. Classic song though. Poor management

  • @studas2011 what age are you then? because its about heroin you lose intrest? so you say that its poor management? ok the beatles Lucy In The Sky with diamonds, so are the beatles also poor management? the best music comes from addicts, led zeplin, the beatles, the stranglers, jimmy hendrix, and go on....

  • beautiful sound...

  • thanks alot, this is amazing really.

  • The Horrors must really love the Dave Greenfield. Dude is wicked. Love this song.

  • I'm Golden Brown. This song is about me.

  • this song is about that hot asian honey i saw walking down the street.

  • One of the most lovliest songs from an innovative and distinctive band; it was a big hit in Israel back in 1982.

  • @SfDoal why does a jew have a big nose?

    air is free hahahahaha

  • gordon brown, text you lies son, lays me down with my machine gun, threw out the night,no need to fight, never a frown(?) with gordon brown, every time just like the last,in the shit tied to the maast, too distant lance-takes both my hands, never a frown with gordon brown, gordon brown-fine a temp tressed,

  • he has a beautiful voice.

  • he does

  • its about heroin definetely. that waht they call heroin back then and still, golden brown.

  • True. So true. I still switch the buzz and think of it as herb merely for my own tastes.

  • definitive its about H^^

  • It's about burnt toast...

  • good shit

  • guys you should just get lyrics...type golden brown the stranglers or yeh wiki it or something. lol

  • It's a song about toast.

  • it's actually a song about heroin...

  • LMHYBAOROTF

  • everytime this cuts to jj he looks like he's itching to do his groovy dance all over the stage!

  • It's not about Heroin.... it's about a new flavour Pringle.... and very yummy it is too.

  • dont bring harry was about heroine, so knowing the stranglers it semms unlikely to write another song about it --- but then who knows.

to me this seems more like an associative, romantic fantasy

  • i always thought it was about marmite

  • a song about heroine.

  • they are obiously high on something

  • I wanna clear all this crap about timings: It starts off in an alternation between 6/8 and 7/8 (6/8 for one bar, 7/8 the next, and then it starts over). The chorus (or at least the bits where Hugh sings) are 6/8 only.

  • personally, i count it as 13/4 (3 bars of 3/4 and 1 bar of 4/4) and then 3/4 for the verses

  • someone can use wikipedia

  • umm no, i wsa counting it that way before i even read about this song on wikipedia

  • stop with the confusion.

    3/4 3/4 3/4 4/4 intro/chorus

    3/4 3/4 3/4 3/4 verse/outro

simple. music theory makes things easier to understand, not more difficult.

What you are saying makes sense, but if you want the official line then buy the official sheet music for the song which is fully endorsed and verified by the band members.

  • That's how it is on the score, yeah. Tbh though, it's whatever works for the individual.

  • Underrated.

  • A Gem !

  • its 6/8 and 7/8 not 3/4 and 4/4 or 3/4 and 13/8

  • According to The Stranglers "Song By Song" Hugh Cornwell tells the author that:

"Musically Golden Brown is in 13/8, so there are three bars of 3/4 waltz-time and then one bar of 4/4, but it only does that in the pieces where there's no singing. When the singing comes in it stays a straight 3/4."

That's a direct quote from the book, by the way.

  • ive seen the official score and im sure it was 6/8 7/8 but i fully accept 3/4 4/4

  • Beeauutiful!!! So few times the waltz keyboard is shown on live performance videos. Cornwell is so cute too...

  • the original is much better the old video

  • Bahlieve,yuor comm. it's right,for me!

  • Cheers,

Love this live version. My friend used to ask me 'wonder what mancheirons are?'

We would have quite happily married any of The Stranglers.

  • You know it's "With my mind she runs", right?

  • later stranglers gigs with Hugh he sang the guitar solo instead of playing it !!!

  • Theme is a 3/4 time signature, refrain is in 13/8

  • not to be a smartass, im weak on figuring out times and stuff, but...well i was wondering could it also be said one bar of 6/8 then one of 7/8? only asked because thats how i described it to a friend of mine who knows theory much better than i, but would be far too polite to correct me.

  • the best way to describe it id: " the time signature was under the influence of golden brown :D" (thumbs up :D)

  • the beginning has three bars of 3/4, and then one bar of 4/4.

  • Hugh looks like he'd been hitting the H like hell back then.

  • Cannabis....

  • These were crazy times......everyone was smacked up...I was doing half the wives and g/fs of The Clash and The Stranglers.......everyone from then was trashed but had lots of talent.....London was smaller then, metaphorically speaking.....club. fashion and music and press (Face and ID) everyoone knew everyone....

  • i love this tune it's a proper anthem!

never a frown, with golden brown

  • *-*

  • TUUUNNEEEE!

  • The guy on the keyboards is an absolute trojan

  • @transformers184 hahahah trojan! wow thats the best word you could of used :L!

  • @transformers184 condom or horse?

  • @transformers184 what does that mean?

  • just to let you no it was the jam who kept them from top spot (just to brag i went to EVERY Stranglers concert, until Hugh left)

  • shhh

  • one of the best songs ever written

  • A year late, better late than ever you are right jiacomino @carpenoctem66

  • @carpenoctem66 The best song ever written.

  • @beggybalti I am lucky enough to know many songs that are about equal in brilliance!

  • @carpenoctem66 Henry Tudor would agree I think

  • a classic song, nearly got to no1 in charts, cant remember who kept the men in black of top spot, something shit i suppose, s1v

  • i so love the stranglers, cant tell how much i think hugh is sooo errmmmm sexy

  • Hugh looks so sad more than the stranglers was ¿Punk? anyway this song is a nostalgic point of our lifes.

  • This song is like a melange between Brubeck and chanson. Very good.

  • Better then athens. Much more natural then athens. Awesome song

  • the version of Golden Brown in Rock in Athens I prefer, but Hugh's gitar solo was a lot better here...

  • How f'n awesome is the guitar solo?? Jeez, I get high just by the solo, that's how f'n awesome it is!

  • what year was this??

  • rockpalast was in germany, and this one seems to be 1983

  • slow,, bad vhs maybee ? ^^

  • thanks for the upload.. great!

  • Now it is nor rare anymore innit?

  • LOL

  • I love how Hugh always looks bored when he plays. But god, he sounds so flawless. Underrated guitarist with a gorgeous voice.

  • wow...hugh more or less played the solo nearly perfect

  • Awesome

  • ..great vid!

    thanks
