Well that depends on your skill set and the area you are living in. You want a nice stout knife that can handle a variety of functions. I don't know if you would want to do it with one single tool. I would go with something think and durable. I have some knife test videos. If you can get a chance check them out. They can give you a little better idea. Please let me know. Take care and hope to hear from you soon.
@Equip2Endure thanks for your response. after going to live off the land, i love it. i went out and bought a Becker bk2, and i love it. whenever i go camping with my dad, and he has trouble splitting knots with his maul, i just baton. with my bk2 that 1/4 inch blade is awesome.

Not yet, Tops is a good company and I'm sure they would help me out if I contact them in reference to the knife, but we want to go about it a different route and see what we can do with the rebuild.
Hay Adam, just for your information, there is also one "survival" feature of the Gerber LMF that you may be overlooking; it was engineered to be more easily modified into an improvised spear.
The handle has scallops on the sides to more readily accept thre curved edge of a pole, and the location of the three lanyard holes are located to opimize lashing it to the pole with cord.
Have not contacted Tops, I have an idea of what their response is going to be since the Fire Strike is marketed as a combat knife, and wood splitting most likley is not considered "Normal Use". I want to complete the modifications and re-test. See if it was a tempering issue before, at that time I think I will contact Tops. Most likely it will be to late to exchange it for a new knife at that time though! Thanks and take care,
for carving, i use my SOG seal revolver or sometimes my victorianox swiss army knife.

Nice vids. One question- can the LMF II make a decent spark if you strike a flint with it?
john22112 1 year ago
@john22112 , long as you use the blade edge, or if you remove some of the coating on the spine.

Which knife would you recommend for me to take out into the wilderness and live off the land with?

5/5 still cant believe what happened to the fire strike. I do like ur "new" model though. You will have to run that through the testing. BS/WU6
