Oh my god, do I know you? I grew up and lived in Atwater for 22 years. That and you are playing Jesu which makes me think you might have hung out in the same circles I did.
I moved out of Atwater in '94. My family was based at Castle AFB. Since then I've lived in Texas, the Phoenix area, and now Seattle. This footage is from a trip I made in 2009, fifteen years later. We probably don't know each other, but Jesu is one of my top favorite bands!
@penguinrock I just had to know. I was one of the only metalheads in Atwater High School 1986-1988 (I got kicked out for idiotic reasons and ended up in continuation school). I started listening to Godflesh in college (Slavestate / Merciless). I have very fond memories of Atwater (not so much with some of its people). Thank you for making this video. I have to go back soon.
this is super cool. i lived there in the late 80's till 95. i still remember everything from walking to Bellevue elementary school to all the shop and railroad track. really miss that place. someday i would love just to go back and see everything.
We lived in 'old base housing" on 5th. Was there when Mr. T visited the youth center and when the SR71 landed, and when we had the welcome home from the first gulf war. I can remember coloring over 5000 easter eggs one year for the egg hunt in the park
We lived in 'old base housing" on 5th. Was there when Mr. T visited the youth center and when the SR71 landed, and when we had the welcome home from the first gulf war.
Was there between 80 and 90. Kids went to school at Schaffer, was in the Boy Scouts with Mac McCoy and Girl Scouts. Loved the parades on the 4th. Never ever lived anywhere that was as cool at Atwater before or since. Thanks for showing
Thanks for the tour man. I was born on base in 1950, lived there till late 1957 when we were transfered to Altus AFB, Ok. The first place I remebr living at was in Castle Gardens, don't rmemeber the address. In '55 we moved to 1199 Palm ave, new housing development then. I might point out that Palm ave. was short, it only went from 3rd st to Linden st. West of Linden was wheat fields. There was an irrigation ditch parallel to Linden and it turned NE there at Palm. That was our playground.
My family was stationed at Castle between 1983 to 1989...We lived in "New Base housing on Caliente Court...Then later moved over to Orchard Park close to the high school....I miss those days
@penguinrock Ha! this is wild, i lived on diablo ct roughly from 1991 to 1994. my fondest memories are all in that neighborhood. we might have known eachother, i'm 26 now
Aww. This is the city I was born and raised in. I just graduated from Atwater High and I moved to Texas about three weeks ago. This makes me miss it so much. :)
I have lived in Atwater my whole life. I graduated form AHS in 1992. I do miss the old Atwater of the mid to late 1980's. Atwate has made some changes (in growth) but still pretty much the same.
New (those days) Base Housing. I had forgotten all about that. Bloss House. Wayer Tower...and the Foster Freeze....back in the day....that was all there was and now...when I visit...I only eat at that Foster Freeze!
I live in a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, which is the sixth largest city in the U.S. The "size" of Atwater is absolutely miniscule compared to the sprawling metropolis I'm used to. It was a delight to traverse the whole of Atwater on a skateboard in just three days.
Thanks for posting this. I haven't been back since my family left in '94. I live in Scotland now and don't know when/if I will ever get back. I am glad to see that the city is still alive. Brings a tear to the eye, especially Shaffer!!
Why did you limit your video to the base, a school and a park? That place has grown immensely to include the Super Target Center and all of the business off of the freeway, the Save Mart shopping center and now a Super Wal-Mart is slated to be built right next to the Super Target...Why not video the whole city?
I stayed at the Applegate Inn and walked over the bridge to see the Super Target... I live in a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, so I see those kinds of corporate chain stores ALL THE TIME.
This video was more about me capturing all the places that I remember from my childhood in the early '90s. If I return (and I am certain at some point that I will; just don't know when), I will try to take more video. I'm surprised by the number of people who have asked me to come back and do more!
liked you video of atwater. i live in tennessee now. and my parents still live in winton. but when i get homesick i watch your video. :) did you graduate from atwater high? you look familiar i graduated in 93. the 80's were the best in atwater. some things have changed but yet...alot hasnt. next time you go visit take more video. :P
I'm a young'un... I was born in 1985 in Illinois, and my family moved to Atwater shortly thereafter. I was nine years old when I moved away in 1994. You wouldn't have known me.
I'm considering re-editing this video, all the footage I took was in HD but I didn't know how to work with it in Adobe Premiere at the time. I intend to return to Yosemite Nat'l Park by way of Merced sometime soon, so if I do, I'll definitely make sure I come back to Atwater.
I STILL LIVE HERE its sad to see what has happened to the base it used to be so full of life ,now its almost a ghost town. glad u saw the new track at the high school ill write some more later. By the way atwater looks better on video.lol @H2O get it?
thats my city where i live today. we are getting bigger the old 2 way street of buhack is now a 4 line street thay are making it bigger we now have super target let us no when ur back i wouldn't mind hereing old stories about our lil old town
OH MY GOD! you went past my house, and at Ralston, they were haveing a VBS, I was there( I was one of the dues wearing the yellow shirt)! lol, i would of loved to be in Atwater during the 80's... that seems like it was the best time to live in Atwater.
Awesome, thanks! I came back with expectations of everything being completely different from what I remember when I was a kid, but I wound up being more surprised by how much was exactly the same, especially my elementary school. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would come back... Perhaps when I go to Yosemite National Park again by way of Merced.
