I just see them as brothers. In canon they're closer than brothers, but they definitely are not lovers. Men can hug and hold hands and not be gay. We should encourage men to be close without fearing being called gay if they aren't that.
An extremely important scene, because it is at this point that Spock realizes for the first time in his life, that he must accept his human half . Perhaps a subject that they should have explored even more in this film.
I reckon it's a way better movie than people give it credit for. Long, poorly paced at times, and in need of script doctoring (considering they made up a lot of it as they went along) but it's more like Star Trek than most of the movies that have been made since. If one does not appreciate these themes, then they should probably go watch Star Wars or something.
@instereovideos They went to such an effort to make them appear young on that movie, I think by the third or fourth film they were just like, awww fuck it, they're old!
The Spock vs. V'Ger plotline in TMP I think was really successful. Spock has the freedom to decide how much emotion to utilize. V'Ger didn't have the capability and needed to merge with living beings to evolve. It's really pretty deep.
People interpret it as gay for a couple of reasons. 1. There are a lot of people who can't imagine a bond this strong not having a sexual element to it--even if that element isn't expressed. That much love, that much investment in one person, is very difficult to read as "just" friendship for some. 2. Hand-to-hand contact is supposed to be extremely intimate to vulcans--such that a touch of fingertips is like a human kiss--which makes their gestures rather sexual.
How this could be interpreted as a gay scene. I support gay marriage all the way, so don't think I'm bashing homosexuality when I say this...but this is just ridiculous. I didn't know that being a good, loyal friend to someone else meant that you were gay.
@xBeatCity --sorry, the above should have been directed at you.
Also, 3. At least by the standards of current American males? Kirk and spock stand way too close and touch way too much, unless they are acting on some sort of closer-than-normal-friends set of social cues. Acting that way towards most guy friends (if you're male, girls get away with this more) is likely to make your guy friends very, very uncomfortable.
@xBeatCity I suppose on some level, I like the idea of them being in love romantically, so I choose to favor that interpretation. Given some of Roddenberry's comments, I am probably not too far off base from what he had in mind. What I don't understand is why some people are so aghast and offended at the idea of a sexual/romantic component to their relationship. I can't understand how it would cheapen the strong bond they obviously share.
Of course being close, male friends doesn't make you "gay" or in love, but why is it such a terrible thing if it does? I don't think as many people would think twice about this if either Kirk or Spock were a woman. I suppose it's just the values our society has programmed into us all our lives, but the concept of sexuality cheapening a strong bond between two people (male, female, whatever) is simply archaic and completely backwards.
@Yoshi741852 It's not boring. it's more dull than anything. It doesn't make you just think "Ah this is so boring I'm gonna turn it off", it's more like too many effects shots that drag things down- There are interesting parts.
i think they should have left this part in as it show that McCoy is a good Dr and Kirk has no understanding. Spock is debilitated, ill, and yet Kirk demands that he get on the bridge immediately
what makes me cross about this clip is that to miss out the Dr McCoy words alters everything and then in the Movie Kirk demands he needs Spock on the bridge immediately. I thought Spock was supposed to be ill Kirk has no feelings . I love Leonard Nimoy 's work so much
Yes, we Earth girls would be throwing ourselves at them. And they'd break our hearts with their cool, untouchable logic. Sigh... Of course, they wouldn't have Spock's sexy, deep voice or his ability to raise one upswept eyebrow and thereby turn me to mush.
Do you think it's meant to be "this simple feeling," or "this, simple feeling?" They're slightly different meanings- first one refers to emotion, second one could just be referring to physical feeling.
It sounds like Spock said the second one but Kirk reacted like it was the first one.
I'm a nerd. <3 So are you, though, so let me know what you think.
I've always assumed it was "this simple feeling", but and I checked Roddenberry's novelization, and I found written "This simple feeling" without commas, then, in my opinion, relates to feelings.
The reaction of Kirk seems to me perfect for the meaning, because he wants that Spock can feel his empathy, that there is no shame to show emotion. But about Kirk reaction I'm not so sure after all... ^__^

@jas0123 No, I see them as brothers because that is what they are.
As an added fact, which has nothing to do with the fact that they are brothers, gayness is morally wrong. Plus, it's pretty disgusting.

Thank you for posting this. A good friend of mine died recently and I come back to asking these same questions. This film was highly underrated because it represented what was best in ST, the philosophical side.
yeah but you know Joe and Jane Q needs CGI and people beating up each other at ever 10 minutes so that's why they make migraine inducing crap like Star Trek 2009 nowadays god forbid they should think a little while watching a movie I wonder how Citizen Kane would do at the box offices today
I think the decision to cut those few seconds more or less comes from the fact that McCoy has come to know Kirk and Spock well enough that he knows what Kirk is doing. And for that intent and purpose, I agree. Plus I don't like how Kirk just shoves off McCoy. That's not cool.
I must have seen this a million times. I brace myself every single one. AND I STILL FLAIL AROUND LIKE AN INSANE FANGIRL AT 0:30. I CANNOT HELP IT. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.
Esattamente. Avrebbero dovuto tradurla in ogni parte. :-(
*sigh* Every time I watch this scene, it makes my inner fangirl melt into a puddle of slashy goo. I don't care how bad the movie was. This one scene makes it all worth it.
IMO, it was a good story but the editing sucked. They could have trimmed up some of the really slow parts and added a subplot or two. I think the writers had a hard time transitioning from TV to cinema.
the movie wasn't bad it was just not made for the masses which is what made all Star Trek movies with the original crew and original cast so freaking good now with the new cast it's nothing but another hollywood crap
Well, it's pretty clear to me why they cut those two lines out. They break up the pacing of the scene. Start-stop-start-stop. The directors cut flows, this sputters.
@lostserenity0 Actually, Vulcans don't kiss with there hands. The touching of hands is irrelevant, it is the touching of minds.
When Vulcans mate, their minds meet. In 'The Enterprise Incident' Spock has a love scene with a Romulan which consists of nothing but rubbing each others hands, at least outwardly. However, if you remember, to effectively mind meld something, a Vulcan must touch it.
As Kirk is unable to reach out his mind, even if they were in love, which they are NOT, it wouldn't work
Vulcans hands aren't erogenous zones under normal circumstances, such as playing chess or accidentally touching another's hand, but it definitely can and is used often as an affectionate gesture, to touch a vulcan's hand. So, like most things, it's sensitivity seems to be under that specific vulcan's control.
It's around 1 hour and 32 minutes of the original movie, after Spock's mind meld with Vyger, he is unconscious and Kirk takes him back in the ship. Then we see this scene in the sickbay.
In the director's cut you can see the same scene, but there is not the line of Bones
I like the little additional bit :). Where does that footage comes from, if it didn't make the Director's cut? Was it part of the theatrical version? Do you know if we can see the full see in the bonus features of the Director's Cut DVD?
This is the old version of the movie, before the director's cut one, I don't know for sure if it is in the bonus features of the director's cut. When I uploaded this I looked for this in the extras, but I wasn't able to find it.
Thanks a lot Annafrancesca. I'll see if I can find an unedited version of the movie somewhere, I,d be interested in seeing what other differences like that there might be.
THAT'S SO CUTE! Aww *-*

English is a silly language. the word Love can mean anything, and sometimes people confuse the meanings

I would say that even if it were Jim Kirk and Miss Spock or Mr. Spock and Jamie Kirk. Their relationship just isn't a romantic one.

@jas0123 No, I see them as brothers because that is what they are.
As an added fact, which has nothing to do with the fact that they are brothers, gayness is morally wrong. Plus, it's pretty disgusting.
Every time I see the TV show and the movies, I see "brother" written all over the place, and that is partly because they act just like me and my best friend (with the exception that neither of us acts like a Vulcan) and we wouldn't call each other anything but sisters.

Thank you for posting this. A good friend of mine died recently and I come back to asking these same questions. This film was highly underrated because it represented what was best in ST, the philosophical side.
LeCutter 2 years ago 7
yeah but you know Joe and Jane Q needs CGI and people beating up each other at ever 10 minutes so that's why they make migraine inducing crap like Star Trek 2009 nowadays god forbid they should think a little while watching a movie I wonder how Citizen Kane would do at the box offices today

I like those 5-ish seconds...it makes you gape even more...if Kirk wants to know so badly, that he'd SHOVE OFF MCCOY...ya know?
xxYaminoHikarixx 2 years ago 53
if there was some uplifting music in the background, this would be straight out of a romantic comedy.
.......just saying.
whichalias 2 years ago 14
I think the decision to cut those few seconds more or less comes from the fact that McCoy has come to know Kirk and Spock well enough that he knows what Kirk is doing. And for that intent and purpose, I agree. Plus I don't like how Kirk just shoves off McCoy. That's not cool.

Don't worry your not the only one here dying from the cuteness(and many other things) in the scene.
I nearly died of squee when I first saw it.

It was like the first gay love story on TV, them came Queer As Folk.
As much as I love that show, this will forever be my fave.

Cosa???? ^_^
annafrancesca1 2 years ago
housewilson85 2 years ago
annafrancesca1 2 years ago
housewilson85 2 years ago
annafrancesca1 2 years ago
Esattamente. Avrebbero dovuto tradurla in ogni parte. :-(

They cut is because from 0:32 to 0:45 is queer XD I love the pairing though
TheDarkCryGirl 2 years ago
...I love them too, but the cut is not from 0:32 to 0:45, the cut is from 0:13 to 0:17 , it's McCoy's line to be cut! ^_^
annafrancesca1 2 years ago
*sigh* Every time I watch this scene, it makes my inner fangirl melt into a puddle of slashy goo. I don't care how bad the movie was. This one scene makes it all worth it.
guinivereXbloodgood 2 years ago 11
ehm...I'm glad that you liked this scene! And the movie is a masterpiece!
annafrancesca1 2 years ago
IMO, it was a good story but the editing sucked. They could have trimmed up some of the really slow parts and added a subplot or two. I think the writers had a hard time transitioning from TV to cinema.
guinivereXbloodgood 2 years ago
the movie wasn't bad it was just not made for the masses which is what made all Star Trek movies with the original crew and original cast so freaking good now with the new cast it's nothing but another hollywood crap
sondano 2 years ago 2
I can't tell...it it a shadow, or did they forget to point Spock's sideburns?
planetiowa 2 years ago
Well, it's pretty clear to me why they cut those two lines out. They break up the pacing of the scene. Start-stop-start-stop. The directors cut flows, this sputters.
harlandmct 2 years ago 4
In addition, Kirk was a real dick to McCoy.
CommissionerBele 2 years ago 2
why'd they cut this scene? It seems harmless o.O
DNDragonmare 2 years ago 2
The scene is not fully cut, just the seconds where Bones tries to stop Kirk who is awaking Spock.
I don't know why the director cut it!
annafrancesca1 2 years ago
Wow. I absolutely cannot see this as anything but a love scene. How did this make it into theatres?!?
...and how can we get it into theatres for Trek XII?!?!?

Hmmm... Vulcans kiss with their hands.... :3
All hail the fathers of slash! <3
lostserenity0 2 years ago 83
@lostserenity0 Actually, Vulcans don't kiss with there hands. The touching of hands is irrelevant, it is the touching of minds.
When Vulcans mate, their minds meet. In 'The Enterprise Incident' Spock has a love scene with a Romulan which consists of nothing but rubbing each others hands, at least outwardly. However, if you remember, to effectively mind meld something, a Vulcan must touch it.
As Kirk is unable to reach out his mind, even if they were in love, which they are NOT, it wouldn't work
StoneKnivesBearskins 1 year ago
@StoneKnivesBearskins
Vulcans hands aren't erogenous zones under normal circumstances, such as playing chess or accidentally touching another's hand, but it definitely can and is used often as an affectionate gesture, to touch a vulcan's hand. So, like most things, it's sensitivity seems to be under that specific vulcan's control.

but then why is he lying there. I and Im sure I will to! if i can find it anywhere =(
ILoveMrSpock 2 years ago
Please! Watch the movie!
...ok, I will tell you.
He is shocked because he had a mind meld with V'Ger, a super entity that/who nearly burned Spock's precious brain because of its great power!
Kirk took him (unconscious) back in the ship. Feeling how empty this powerful logic entity is, Spock understands a lot of things..
annafrancesca1 2 years ago
ooo, so hes ok?!? thats good, as long as he is alright =) thanks

Can someone PLEASE explain to me where this scene is in the motion picture!
I watched it spesifically looking for this scene but couln't find it.
TT_TTsooo confuzed...
frodoforever56 2 years ago
It's around 1 hour and 32 minutes of the original movie, after Spock's mind meld with Vyger, he is unconscious and Kirk takes him back in the ship. Then we see this scene in the sickbay.
In the director's cut you can see the same scene, but there is not the line of Bones

I like the little additional bit :). Where does that footage comes from, if it didn't make the Director's cut? Was it part of the theatrical version? Do you know if we can see the full see in the bonus features of the Director's Cut DVD?
monroemary 2 years ago
This is the old version of the movie, before the director's cut one, I don't know for sure if it is in the bonus features of the director's cut. When I uploaded this I looked for this in the extras, but I wasn't able to find it.
annafrancesca1 2 years ago
Thanks a lot Annafrancesca. I'll see if I can find an unedited version of the movie somewhere, I,d be interested in seeing what other differences like that there might be.
