I get what avbria said. I'd like to share my experience...when I was around 3 1/2 yrs old...I barely spoke 12 words...until I entered Deaf school...I learned a lot, spoke a lot of words n talked to my hearing family with words, everyone's wowed n amazed...I was put on a show/tv to show the world I can talk. Yet when I'm surrounded w/the hearing world, all I "hear" was mumbles n jumbles, lost to what they said. When I'm w/people who signed, I come alive n get involved in conversations. Got it?
I understand perfectly your personal experience, but all these years later research and development of skills/ technology moves forward in leaps and bounds. Got it?
@plator99 wait a minute. You're never satisfied to see people wanting to accept limitations? Uhm... isn't a dead battery for the cochlear implant a limitation in itself as well? It doesn't hurt to have -both- chances to have a better higher probability. And I don't think you will ever know what it is like to be deaf til you experience it yourself, mate. Cheerios! Say what? -waving hand-
@Pammie77 True. They need to understand that a CI doesn't allow a child, or adult, to hear. They "feel/hear" sounds, like blobs, but no definite words. They really need to educate themselves.
When people were talking, I can see how this deaf boy was lost. Imagine if everyone signs, he will be more engaged into conversations. It is always important to sign to deaf children regardless the use of cochlear implant because they don't always get everything.
@plator99 Perhaps some, if not few, can but not all. You are right when you said "learning to distinguish" and "some practice" as these steps require the development of a certain skill to pick up what was said in the room since it is not naturally acquired as opposed to natural signed language. It is nonsense to assume that ALL can listen and talk since these are learned skills just like it is nonsense to assume that ALL can play the piano or do gymnastics.
You're implying that a man made skill is natural, it is not. A child's natural proclivity for quickly learning or adapting to a given set of circumstances can apply to either signing or speaking and hearing if the child is given the chance to do so. Why is this always a point of contention when either of these is concerned? And I'm sorry, but comparing art skills to basic communication skills is a nonsensical argument at best.
@plator99 because you have to be deaf to understand it. I went through that kind of environment as I was able to hear rather well as I was labeled hard of hearing while growing up. Like this boy who showed no clue of what was going on after 13 seconds when he was done singing and for the rest of 40 seconds, people were talking in the background and not even once did the boy showed his comprehension until the woman grabbed his hand to say good bye. Boy, he surely looked confused.
@plator99 Nope. This child is deaf who tries to hear with a listening device like I did so I am making a point that we both have in common. For you who is not deaf should not be assuming but listening to what we have to say. And nope, I am not latino which is nothing to do with this but being deaf does. Can't you tell the difference?
Ah, and you reveal your true nature and bias in your condescension. It was easy enough to draw you out. And yes, confusing a child is easy, he has plenty of time to learn and adapt. But the mere fact that you must attempt to make this about you and your experiences while trying to exclude me as "the outsider", you've discredited yourself quite nicely by doing so. If you had tried to reach a common ground I would have gladly agreed with you, I've suffered bias and discrimination myself.
@plator99 I think you are going more way off with the discrimination thing. It is quite simple as that. I am just a Deaf person as I know what it is like and not any hearing person will understand that or ever live through that. All I am asking is for them to listen to what we have to say. Yes, you are an outsider whether you like it or not but that doesn't mean you are not welcome. There is no intention to discriminate you.
Mixed signals there, saying that I'm an outsider and then in the next breath that I am welcome nonetheless. Could say it was a matter of "miscommunication" as it were, you and I not quite getting the gist of each others point of view. Oh well, the point is to try, by any means to try even if it means taking a chance on something that has a low probability. Its why I'm never satisfied to see people wanting to accept limitations.
and am no stranger to it. But alas, the wind easily separates the wheat from the chaff. Refusing to see what we would have in common and instead diving into your own narrow agenda you're taking the same stance as the bigots and racists who have opposed me in the past, I'm different so I'm wrong. Sorry, but I can tell the difference, and seeing through your narrow point of view saddens me, I hope you continue to grow as a person and overcome your limitations.
@plator99 You can frame all you want. You are just being ridiculous! As a Deaf person, I went through a lot of discrimination and you think I don't know what it is like? No one should be that. I didn't call you names or shun you out of the discussion as I am still talking to you but you have been dismissing me as a Deaf person so your agenda is to stir nothing but trouble. Instead of being open to learn, you made harsh judgment about skills like you know it all. You need to grow up. So long.
Ha, ahh I was right after all, and you revealed your true colors at the end. Alas, I must be truthful in confessing I could care less, I had a good inkling of how you were when you insisted on trying to mask limitations as a culture. If its easier for you to walk away from adversity then so be it, adversity brings out the very best in people, and the very worst, some people on the other hand can't stand being opposed or dealing with anything that is difficult, enjoy that easy path.
@plator99 You missed the point of my valid discussion and you don't even know me. Why would I want limitations since I am advocating for this child to have FULL language accessibility when one assumes that this child can hear and understands everything. Wearing listening devices are not the same to those who can hear and yes, it requires a skill. There are plenty Deaf children who wear hearing aids and cis that some of them pick up speech/listening well and some don't. Get it?
Its obvious at this point you've become incensed and perhaps it would be better to agree to disagree as I don't care to keep pointing out your patronizing manner. I've tried to find common ground with you, but you insist that no one can relate to you unless they receive some kind of stamp of approval. This isolationist attitude greatly harms your cause as well as you twisting the meaning of my comments as sinister while you try to act the martyr.
@plator99 I offered you my explanation of my experiences, that's all. You just chose to fall on Deaf ears. You chose to create illusions but I understand that is the tendency of a troll. I ain't coming back talking with you since you are not being nice as you label and call me names. Just grow up ok.
I'm really trying to understand why you feel the need to obfuscate and redirect the argument, but at this point you've digressed so far away from the spirit and intent of my commentary that I will just let you stagnate in your isolation since you've made it clear you want to be left alone and not speak to anyone who does not implicitly agree with you, enjoy ^_^
My parting comment, I expected better argument as well as grammar and clarity in your writing, your second sentence there was nonsensical, I am forced to assume you meant that your "explanation" fell on deaf ears. And by definition, a troll is someone who posts off topic, extraneous or inflammatory comments on an online community, thus while trying to accuse me of it you also accuse yourself, brilliant. I feel awful that this is the quality of educator American children can expect now.
Basically, if you didn't abuse the spirit of my questions or argument or claim I was dismissing you due to the disability you step forward and started using as a crutch in this argument, I could be asked to care. But, you are solely concerned with an isolationist and biased agenda for whatever reason and cannot respond in a genuine or honest manner. I get it, you have your precious ideologies to push at all costs yay for you, but pushing it into every argument is weak and pointless.
@plator99 Thank you for proving my point again. You continue to label and making an ASS out of U and ME when you don't even know me, geez! I never said disability as a crutch as I am simply just a Deaf person. Your behavior is nothing but arrogant so it looks like you haven't learned how to listen.
U ppl do know this is chiese rite? I mean I can understand it but wat bout you guys?

I agree Avbria, but sadly some hearing parents thinks their deaf chldren no longer needs sign language cause now they can hear. :(

Nonsense, learning to distinguish between ongoing conversations can be learned with some practice.
