  • Saw it at Fortune and it was amazing, though I will never think rocking chairs in the same way again. The sound it made every time it started up made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

  • I saw this a few years ago and I was surprised by how good it was :D I didn't think that a play could scare me until I saw this :P

  • im going to see this but im really scared as its supposed to be so scary!

  • It's Better In The Fortune Theatre, I'd Still Watch This One But Still

  • where the hell is the scene with the rocking chair???

  • is this at the founte theater?

  • @TheAllthatjazzgal No, this video is from the Broadway production that ran for a short time.

  • Went to see this about 2 weeks ago, thought it was absolutely amazing.

Convinced my mum to come and see it with me again:-)

Very suspenseful play, dont think i had one nail i hadnt bitten when i left xD

  • Thank you for uploading this! For drama I have to write a piece of 2000 words on this but I already forgot the entire play. (watched it in fortune theatre two weeks ago)

Thank you very much! Excellent play!

  • i watched this at the fortune theatre wednesday. scared me to death. especially the screams

  • I've seen it twice: just as brilliant both times!

  • this play has been, here in greece, at theater the year 2007-2008,with the same actors and the same director.I've been there both times! It was really great!Well-played.it's really a test for the hippocritic abbilities of an actor.pitty that we don't have the london system where a play continues for several years and with different actors & directors!anyway, thank you for giving me the opportunity to watch the english version!

  • this stage play is one of the best and one of a kind!!!

  • Is this the stage version that everyone is talking about?I was watching the movie and read comments on how the stage version is scarier? Am I correct?

  • I saw this on Saturday with my drama class at The Fortune, brilliant :D

  • Guys don't misunderstand this play isn't scary at all though it does make you shiver a bit. Saw this in Fortune Theater Last Year with the Drama Class great

  • Oh my God, I'm going to see this for my birthday with my boyfriend, I've already seen it and scared me so much (especially the scream), my boyfriend on the other hand hasn't :P hehehehehe

  • i went to see this yesterday in london... absolutely shat my pants! it was brilliant though!

  • I saw this production in June this year, the new actors are so amazing and the new effects are terrifying!!! Definitely recommend going to see!!! Couldn't sleep for about a month afterwards and I still creep myself out when thinking about it!!! But it was AMAZING!!! :)

  • I hope to see this in London on Oct/Nov 10 it will be my 1st time in a Theatre

  • I saw this production when I was in London in 2007... I was so stressed, high-strung, and scared that I had to have other people sleep on my floor! It was EXCELLENT!

  • I've seen this live, and let me tell you there were some parts where the whole theatre was screaming, it was amaazing the tension was excellent i jumped so much and screamed x

  • i just cant imagine a play bieng scary

  • @silenthillmaster755

AHAH that s funny!! That s exactly what I said to my sister before I went and see it!!

    Well I was WROOOOOOOOOOOOONG!!!!

  • i was scared shitless when i went to see this! fantastic at the fortune theatre xxx thanks for sharing this

  • My uncle wrote this, good old uncle steve! :)

I really wanted to meet him though :(

But i havent seen it yet, hopefully ill go soon :)

  • I went to see this in Newcastle Theatre Royal and it is freakin' creey! There is a Hell of allot of moments where you shat yourself!

  • well done for filming this - you took a risk there, it's much appreciated, I saw it about five years ago at the Fortune, it was amazing just how scary they managed to make it. If you get into it it, open your senses - it will scare the bejesus out of you

  • @linclinc5 well said i watched it last December and still cant forget it because it was so good if I had a chance I would watch it again.

  • @linclinc5 Thanks - I actually didn't film this myself, this is from a video of the NY production that ran quite a few years ago, the tape has been making the rounds of the collector's circuit and I just thought I'd throw some scenes up.

  • I saw it last night for the first time & while is was beautifully written, with fantastic actors & was pretty suspenseful at times I have to say I didn't find it scary at all!

  • In an old, haunting and cramped Victorian theatre i don't mind saying i bricked myself senseless. So creepy with enough suspense to float a boat (?)

  • scariest thing i hav ever seen in my opinion

  • i wasn't aware that this play had been granted an amateur licence - has it??

  • @snoozebottle Yes, it's actually been done quite a few times by regional & non-professional houses here in the states.

  • so good, i keep meaning to see it again before they stop showing it.

  • i'm taking btec drama nxt year and my teacher said that we would be seeing this

I've already seen it with my mum and sister but i can't wait to see the look on my friends faces when we see it

  • Ive just been to see this with school drama dept, but i have a really big phobia of ghosts, i went in the theater shaking and came out crying.

The story line was different than i imagined and not as scary but it was very jumpy.

  • is it easy to understand?

  • i saw The Woman in Black while in London and even though I had read the book and the play was still terrified by it. It didn't help that there were teenagers in the front that screamed at every little thing.

  • Hands down scariest part of this play (it was in the London production) is when the lights go out... and he fumbles his torch... holy crap I soiled myself.

  • The rocking chair bit...FUCK MY LIFE :|

  • He Ha

  • this was sooo scary. the scream scared the life out of me and that rocking chair... omg that was horrible

it is actuallt sooo scary. the 2nd half of the play is actuallly horrible but amaizng. scared me sooo much

  • @Joanna194 Haha the screaming makes me jump everytime... it's so scary when she comes into the audience aswell and you don't even know where she is!! Even though she can't really hurt you, it's still scary as hell! the ending really scared me too :S

  • thankyou guys, im going to see it on thursday, would you recommend it??? :) x

  • is it actually really scary?????? :O

  • That really depends on you. Some people find it frightening, others find it suspenseful; it's certainly entertaining either way. I'll just say that I did jump out of my seat more than once when I saw it.

  • @jjobie yes it bloody is, i screamed at a steward!!

  • @abbiallen95 nop

    just very jumpy

  • lol when i saw it i went with my school and everyone was screaming and hiding their faces in thier hands

  • @abbiallen95 - I saw it in the West End around the mid 90's and wasn't expecting much - it starts in a really subdued and small scale way but then opens up with various stage effective achieved through lighting etc. The freakiest moment was when the whole theatre was flooded with dry ice - you can't see anything but you hear lots of sound effects for the moment. Then there are the sudden appearance of the woman - so simple yet really unnerving. Well worth seeing.

  • isnt is illigal to record a play!!!!

  • @JakeSauvage123 : I didn't record this, someone videotaped this years ago when the play was presented briefly in NY. This tape is currently being traded among collectors.

  • Im seeing this next month - I Fear my ears life... Let alone my own XD x

  • It was so scary in the theatre :O

right at the front was not a good place 2 be lol...or near a speaker with that scream lol.

  • seeing it tomorow gunna shit myself!

  • I saw this in London! It freaked me out so bad. And we saw it at night.

  • Me too! I was so scared when we left the theatre. Lucky enough it was St. Patrick's day, so I could get a stiff drink down me without admitting I was scared. LOL

  • This play scared the monkeys aoutta meDX

  • I'm going to see this this year :)

  • sm but this thursday!!!

  • omg, i remember seeing this with my school. i hated it, but loved seeing it at the same time :S :)

  • I know how you feel I was right in the bottom row and it scared me to death my Dad didn't warn me what it was going to be like at all CURSE THAT GHOST FOR RISING FROM THE SMOKE BESIDE ME MAKING ME PEEE!!!

  • i remember going to see this for the first time, i though it wasnt going to be that scary. the first half was ok, i was more frightened by the steepnees of the fortune thearte, but the second half so scary.

  • Why don't we have things like these here in Canada? :(.

  • yes, its scary. It has a sort of after effect. You think of it when you are alone in the dark. Really psychological. There will be a new film version of The Woman in Black released in 2010.

  • might see it today is it scary

  • Amazing play - thanks for posting!

  • im a school kid and i kinda got a annoyed peopel screamed when someone shouts. But it is kinda scary but not a great introduction to theatre, wouldnt want to set foot in another theatre after that , Fotune theatre is tiny! lol

  • omg this was brilliant :D :D

  • I saw this yesterday at the fortune theatre in london it was absolutely superb

  • Great play. I saw it once at London's Fortune Theatre, amazing... But you MUST see it on Mexico City!!!! You can''t imagine how wonderful is there!!!!! No words to describe that experience!!!!

  • I saw it once in Mexico City and twice in Tijuana and I agree that it is a magical experience. Another thing that I have to say is that Rafael Perrin the young actor was my directing instructor in Mexico City.

  • do u have a video of dis play when staged at mexico city

  • going to see this on saturday cant wait!

  • Ok saw this in london's fortune theatre and it was entertaining and what not - but not scary, nor spine chilling, jumped when the door slammed but thats about it.

I suppose the atmosphere was killed by all the screaming school kids.. I mean the lights dimmed and they screamed, that did ruin it a tad.

  • i have seen it live!!! it isn't the actual woman who is scary! it's the amazing build-up that the actors create and they leave you hanging!!! it is well worth seeing!! and it isn't "terrifying" more "jumpy" !!

  • i saw this in london when i was 12 - i never knew what people meant by the term 'spine chilling' until that night!!

  • it isnt as bad as everybody says it is!

  • lol go watch it live.

  • i did and i was laughing, some bits were jumpy and a bit scary though. i've seen scarier things.

  • Hm..I want to see this but am a little worried!

  • Its ok dont be worried. i saw it at 12 and it was freaky but still manageable and i could sleep ok that night

  • Watched this a few weeks ago with my school, it scared me alot! i screamed loads, it was really good acting.

  • we went to see this with the school and tbh i wasnt really scared but i swear on my familys life this guy in the front row called for assistance, then this woman came and helped him up while the play was still going, when he got to are row he dropped and started screaming, he was having a fucking panic attack from the noise and it was forrible, he was crying and shit like that but the play still went on, thats what made it bad for me fucking horrible

  • saw this last year with my englsih class...me and my two mates were white with fear and yh...i may have cried somewhat as we left lol tht chair still haunts me xxx

  • The rocking chair scene is the scariest thing in my life, the picture of that scene has NEVER left me!!!

  • same, it creeped me out soooo much!

  • Why is the text different in this post than as printed by Samuel French?

  • Because they're constantly changing the play. Probably to keep it fresh or "exciting," but also quite possibly because playwrights often go back and tweak shows that have been running for a long time. Could have also been the director's idea. Who knows.

  • Aha,

I go around the theatre all the time whisphering

    "Spider....Spider...."

    all the time now:D

-since we did the show in the Theatre in The Round, we had all of these hidden doors and platfourms, so before rehersals, I'll sit in one and wait for someone to come in that saw the show with me and I'll starting screaming and going "Spider, Spider!"

It's too bad too): The director asked me to be the woman in black, but since I was in Into The Woods at the time I had to say noD:

    Best show ever!

  • Ahh seeing this tomorro :S

  • i saw this play like a week ago to day it was the scariest thing iv ever watched and i dont get scared easy i had to sleep with the light on but seeing wicked the next day helped me get over it im still scared she will walk around the corner now lol

  • I saw this in london 5 years ago, i still haven't gotten over it!

  • i went to see this in london few days ago, omg this scared me silly when it got to the rocking chair - half of my mates after the trip are still gettin over it ! :P brilliant

  • it was really good day out!scay but i only screamed for the sake of screaming!

    really great to watch!

  • i loved it!

it was freaky... but i wasn't that scared.. i loved it too much.

but we wanted the woman to walk through the audience but she only did it once

  • i saw this a few years ago with school..i scare easy nad hate sudden loud noises, i nearly had an asthma attack..id go again though haha, the actings amazing.

  • I saw this in at the Fortune Theatre in London. I was a little disappointed. I enjoyed it but it was far from scary. I was polite but there were occasions when other audience members laughed at things I know weren't supposed to be funny.

  • scary? i fell asleep, nice comfy theater

  • In this club me and my 2 other friends are in it. And we a re seeing this show. It's gonna be funny! Do you know how loud we scream!!

  • i saw this today at worthing.

  • same, it was scary :S

  • lol, r u from sion.

  • Dude thats good, but you really shouldent be filming in there!

  • +1.. I do want to mention that I wasn't the one who filmed this - this is an old video that someone took of the short-lived Broadway production, been floating around for a bit so I decided to put some clips up from the tape.

  • I saw this in London and it was absoutly fantastic and really scary :P The whole audience was scared! Was a good laugh tho :) Thanks for posting!!

  • omfg i saw this last night in cheltenham....scariest thing ive seen in my life, if you havent seen it then go now lol

  • in stoke dis waz

  • lmao i watched dis yday in theatres lmaoo i jumped out ma seat in regeant theatre lool x

  • regent theatre in hanley? or a diff?

  • i saw this yesterday (as previously posted) at the fortune theatre in london. I didn't find it too scary, it just makes you jump. The stage doesnt look quite like this either...

  • im going see this tomorrow (wednesday) in stoke on trent ... it looks really really good

  • ugh im going on tuesday =S

  • each actor play it in his own way - the script does differ but the story is the same (Y)

  • i just came back from seeing the 2008 version of this - they change the actors every 6 months so they dont get physcotic and to keep things fresh apparently - this version of the opening is alot weaker than the current one - my drama teacher has seen the production 10 times and said that the one that is currently playing is the scariest she'd ever seen it - i pooped myself :( really good play though ! :)

  • Very cool! How does the play open now? You've got me curious...

  • well instead of the actor entering from the side he comes out from the back of the audience, shouts really loud "what day was it?" he scared the crap outa me, it was really good though ! :)

  • yer he did the same when i went to see it, no joke i jumped about 50 feet in the air...lol! such a creepy play!!

  • Did you get a good receiving of this?

  • im 14 and we had to aschool trip to watch this! i shitted myself!!! terrifying

  • i've just got back from watching this, my throat is still aching like fuck!

  • i going to watch this with my school and apparently it scares the shit out of people!! OMG save me!

  • I wouldn't call it "shit" but it's certainly one of the weaker stagings of one of the most terrifying opening scenes in theater. Why the changes to the script?!?! It's perfect as written!

  • I'm not sure what you mean... do you mean the whole thing with Kipps walking in and starting to read from his manuscript? It's always started with that. I don't know why they added in the prior bit with the thunder and all, I don't remember seeing that when I saw this in London.

  • no i mean when the actor come in, he came from the back of the audience and shouted really loud :) Kipps was going "It was 9:30 on christmas eve" and the the actor walked down the isle and shouted "What time was it" but he shouted it really loud so we all jumped, was kinda funny :) but it was well scary though, doing loadsa cw on it now and im like ahhhh just shuup ! :) lol wb x

  • No, the dialogue has been changed significantly from the original script. The backstory stuff is all new, and kills the flow and energy of an incredibly powerful opening scene.

  • Where do you suppose this one was done?

  • This video is from the broadway production a few years back.

  • I finally got a copy of the original script as produced and checked it out for comparison; there really wasn't *that* much new stuff added. I imagine it was quite possibly Mallatratt himself who made the additions.

  • apparently yes. haha.

  • Saw this @ the fortune theartre about five years ago!! I have never been so terrified in my hole life!! Amazing how with just three people!!

  • The acting and production quality is pretty good. It's a shame so much of Mallatratt's script was changed. The original monologue is one of my favorites.

  • I saw it in Auckland a while ago and it was the scariest shit..... AGH

  • im scared now....

going with school and have made my friends promise 2 look after me...

    wish me luck

  • lol i just went about a week ago and it scared the crap outa me.

  • What I would really like to see is a close-up of the Woman in Black make-up, just so that I can see how it's applied.

  • i went with my school,

    never came back.

    hah,

    shit scary!

  • I saw the one in London a year or so ago, people in the audience were screaming it was soo creepy!!

  • I'm going to watch this, can someone answer this question? Why do they dsay dont sit on the end of the isles and dont look up?

  • not sure bout "don't look up" but they say don't sit on the end of the isles because in the woman in black's first appearence she walk right down the isle, and it's the creepiest thing ever if she walk right past you: you don't see her coming and you just feel her clothes brush you and you look up at her and you can just see the edge of her pale face...never forgotten that

  • And that happened to me!! She walked right past me... I was terrified!

  • me neither

i was sat on the aisle at the front!

i heard my cousin shout "omg shit" from behind me and looked up and there she was.

she brushed past me... it still scares me now!

  • same! I was on the front row, the seat next to the aisle, and when she came I screamed. And do you know the part with the hooves coming closer and then the scream, gosh! That was so scary!!!! I went with the school to see it and we were all scared! lol! Never slept that night!

  • i saw this yesterday with my school we're all 15 and honestly we all needed another pair of pants with us its that scary

my i ended up with a sore throat i screamed that much

  • i saw it today in london! lol was pretty intense

  • the most fucked up thing i seen seen in my life. Omg i had to sleep with the lgiht on for 3 days LOOL (i was 15 hehe) proper fukd up man

  • Just saw this- It was soooooo scray :-) I went with my school everyone was screaming lol!!

  • Ok, I'm off to see this tomorrow.

    Is it really that scary?

    And how is it scary?

    :) x

  • It's the Broadway production, that ran for a short time after the West End one became a hit.

  • My school did a production of this, even that scared the fuck out of me!

  • This was one of the best little gems of theatre. Funny, scary and so unique. I screamed so loud...we could not stop laughing!!! A MUST SEE!!!!!

  • i went to see this a few years ago after we saw the film,it's brilliant,VERY scary.

  • I went to see this last summer w/ my sister and even though it was a matinee, I was scared out of my wits. Such a good play and I would totally recommend it to anyone who likes this sort of thing.

  • please could ianjboswel reply to this:

i saw it yesterday as well. did you see it in the evening or matinee? was it in london and did you see a group of school girls sitting on the right isle??

    write bcak please

  • yes it was london, fortune theatre, yeh i was across the isle from school girls, so yeh we were there at the same time :)i was the other side of the isle on the very end so she walked right past me... and yes it was the evening...the play was great, only bad bit is we have to write loads of coursework on it now :(

  • i just saw this yesterday with my school..........it's amazing, ive never been so scared :-)

  • i went to see this on thurday

ive never been so scard in my life

  • wow wat a clip scary !!!!!1

  • I shat myself when I saw this in London.

  • Thanks for uploading - I love this play!!!

  • fuck me dude this is one of the best things ive ever seen but also the scariest! Yeah it starts off ok but then towards the end they cram in a load of scary bits like the rocking chair, guy with the torch sound effects it's soooo scary!

  • Saw this play last Thursday. Blimey, it is scary.
