@nyc11104 I agree with you. Most composers prior to the classical era left hardly any articulation, phrasing, or dynamics with their pieces. It was considered an insult to the musician, as if the composer was telling them how to do their jobs. Plus, ornamentation was left out of the manuscript, as it was to be used at the performers discretion. In a way one could say that the composer provided the skeleton, and the performer fleshed it out.
