We never hear about the involvement of China & the Soviet Union for the north or Australia, South Korea & Thailand for the South (or Canada's involvement for that matter). At the end of the day the south could still have won after the U.S. pulled out, I know about the peace accords of '73. The north ignored these accords after a year and plowed through the south to Saigon.
