Have to say this: by the end of the 16th century, harpsichords often had a stop called "harp" where they had pins jutting against the strings to make them fuzzy. The texts show that this was an expected condition for harps, and indeed, most african instruments today still have contraptions devised for this.
It's only in modern times that the aesthetics have gone to "clear" sounds;
By the way, shouldn't you learn to make divisions on the music?
@wmacdonald We sure do! Per Mare, Per Terras!!! You're more than welcome, I LOVE your videos, definitely among my very top favorites of all time. If I ever move to Skye, I'll sure visit y'all's harp shop.
IS MATH SIN!!! What a beautiful song that is. I am a Macdonald myself, and although not of Glencoe, but of Sleat, I am a proud Macdonald nevertheless and I weep for the ones that perished that day and mourn them every year. I didn't even know we had a song for it, and this is by far, one of the most beautiful melodies I had the pleasure to listen to on a Clàrsach Celtic Harp. Very well done, you make Scotland, all the Celts, and our Clan Donald very proud, girl! And congrats to your dad as well.
@wmacdonald I hope to not bother you, but I also have been in some trouble finding material to play on my new harp, if you could send me some I would be really gratefull, also I love your videos and I find them to be a great inspiration as a musician, in any case I thank you in advance for the attention and for posting such wonderful pieces of music.

Do have a place online where you buy sheet music? I have a 24 string harp and have the worst time trying to find music that 'fits' that number of strings.
Just which scale did the players of the original instrument use? Pythagorian? Modal Just?
I'm far more concerned by the 'thick' nature of the sound... I suspect the instrument would enefit from thinner strings which would give a clearer set of harmonics, producing a less 'fuzzy' sound
Thanks for you comment! Define out of tune - I must agree with you :-) one of the bass notes I play is a little sharp for my ear! If you listen to later recordings of my harp you will notice that the fuzzy sound is no longer there due to my father re working the gauging :-D...J
Its a harp.. if at least one of the notes wasn't a little waywrd, something would be wrong;-)
So did your Father use a lighter gauge? I heard a player on here using very thin strings, and the music makes a much cleaner sound for longer, but I guess that it is harder to control
So beautiful.

Does one have to grow the nails for playing this type of harp?
yunta51 1 year ago
It helps to have nails but you can get away without ;-)

I've been meaning to tell you how much I like the peat stain you're using on some of your harps.

the base note sounds like the tolling of a bell which suits the story behind this piece of music
MissAlbaNuadh 1 year ago
somehow i like the "out of tune" base note. gives it something *old* ^^
