My cat ate 1 pill pocket minus the pill which she spit out. She never ate another one. I put the pill in cheese, out it came. Cream cheese, kitty malt, butter, baby food, gravy...all didn't work. And she was pretty dangerous with her claws and teeth. Bless her. She finally got over her cold with my above pilling technique. (It comes in liquid form...wish vet had told me that.)
My cat avoided all ways of taking her pills. I finally had to get a friend to open her mouth and insert the pill. The cat was inside a cloth bag and that was inside a heavy plastic bag. The bags protected us from her claws. I held her neck out of the bag and squirted water in her mouth after the pill went in. She kept spitting it out. Eventually, we got it inside her. I massaged her throat to encourage her to swallow. She was rewarded with a lick of butter and some treats.
There is a product at pet stores called Pill Pockets (dog and cat varieties). They are small meaty flavored treats and you can insert the pill into the treat. Some pills may need to be cut into pieces and several treats given. Be sure to watch and make sure the cat eats it all.
You always need to be gentle! If you frighten the cat, it will be even harder next time. Try embedding the pill in a morsel of food - a small piece of cheese often works well.
Thank you! Sorry to hear your cat needs pills. You might try the cheese trick as mentioned below. Just mould a little cheese around the pill (not too much!) then try putting the cheese/pill down in front of your cat. With any luck he or she will just eat it! This is much less traumatizing than trying to put it in your cat's mouth, The trick is not to make it too big. Good luck!
When my cat got sick with hyperthyroidism, we went through a period of several months where we had to give him pills every day. They way we did it is we would take american cheese and mold it around the pill. As long as he wasn't able to chew the pill, he'd wolf it right down. That required placing it slighly back in his mouth.
A few months later, he was the first cat ever to get thyroid surgery....an innovation of a particular vet from Chicago. He lived another 10 years.
It's amazing what they can do now! They can also treat thyroid with pills. The pills in this video were quite large antibiotics, but sometimes smaller pills can be a problem as they can drop out of the mouth later if not swallowed properly. The cheese trick you mention works very well, particularly for small pills as it makes it easier to swallow. (This cat loves cheese!)
my two cats have to take meds twice a week. I had to get the medicine in liquid because it was impossible to get them to swallow the pills and keep them down. you are so lucky!
Whenever he has needed pills, he's always taken them like this! (I'm glad to say he's not on medication now). This is a strange cat; he'll eat anything - particularly if no one's watching. His favourite is cheddar cheese, but he also likes Weetabix, Shredded Wheat and muesli - even the raisins!
Holy cow that cat is BEAUTIFUL.

I'd get the cat high on catnip and then I'd give the cat an injection of whatever.

You know why cats like cheese, of course? It's so they can wait for the mouse with baited breath....

Well, luckily he was only on the pills for a short time. As you can see, the pills were yellow. I think he was hoping it was a piece of cheese!

haha you make it look so easy :P

Yes, it's easy with him because he'll eat anything! Other cats can be tricky!
