Most people don't know much about belly dance and I can't really blame them for "sexualizing" it. The costumes and the moves by their very nature are sexy and suggestive. .. and these make the art form not only beautiful but also controversial at the same time. I've been dancing for 5 years and one advice my mentor gave me is this: when dancing, don't look at the men in the audience... look at his lady companion instead, haha!

What bugs me is that it seems like ALL they know how to do is shimmy. There's some technique missing. I do applaud them for being beautiful and having the guts to get up there, but there is a lot missing from their routines. However, what they do is what the American audience tends to like (and expect) from belly dancers.

About the American audience, I really don't think that is necessarily true. A lot of people tend to think it is sexual, however, not everybody in America thinks belly dancing is sexual. The people who do are ignorant.

And i personally do not think think any thing is missing from their routine, however, to each her own ^.^

I think it really depends on who's dance, and what style of belly dance they are preforming, ya know?? For example, Turkish belly dancing seems to be more sensual then, lets say, Egyptian. In the Middle East, it seems to be a dance of the culture, like hip hop to America. They preform it at weddings, etc. Either way, I concur with you about how much talent and hard work it takes :)

I did not find this overall presentation and dance something special. In an average Bollywood movie almost 3-4 songs are inserted with same background and dance steps which are even more complicated than those shown by Kaya and Sadie rather I felt the style where they were swaying the red cloth is actually what is shown in Bollywood movie songs.
