I saw him play live a few years ago - he was great... I had no idea he had these skills though - and I think it's good trait that a guy doesn't always have to show off his speed and flash. He seemed to be playing just the 'weird' shit he was into that night - Chinese tunes and such... And he did what became Jeff Buckley's 'Grace' too, which was quite special
excuse me ?!? gary and jeff worked together and gary wrote some of the most imortant songs for jeff and they performed together. what the f*** you mean by *use him*? i think you have no idea what an artistic collaboration might be -- foremost in music. take care of your own face. thank you
that's not quite how it was. jeff wasn't at all happy with their collaboration. I could explain it in much further detail or you could read a book called Dream Brother by David Browne. thank you.
well, i bought the book, i read it and i didn't really find hints to justify your critisism on gary lucas. he wanted to keep jeff in his band, and jeff didn't stay: normal stuff between artists. even later on gary was invited by jeff to perform with him in some occasions. i don't think or feel that jeff had to be mad at gary or the other way round. still don't get it why you argued in that rude way. maybe you'll explain more. thank you
i find it hard to believe you actually read the book. anyway, to me jeff was immensely more artistic and talented, perhaps lucas was more technically advanced but that's all he was to me. jeff had what he needed to ever have a chance at making it, and he seemed to want to exploit him for that. jeff was all new to the business, and he wanted to take advantage of that. lucas wanted the record deal contract to make him in control over jeff artistically, and economically. that's what I think.
but you could interpret the happenings completely the other way round: lucas is a great composer and wrote perfect songs for jeff. jeff profited from that and left as soon as he saw an advantage in it. lucas only tried to keep him desperately in his group. problems with contracts are ubiquitous and i wouldn't construct a character discussion out of it. at least dissing lucas as you did is and preaching and unfair. there's always two to tango
I disagree, lucas wrote songs for himself and his band. I think jeff felt he wasn't getting the freedom he wanted, he was unhappy and wanted out of the band. in what would this advantage be that you're talking about? I don't think I was unfair, yes I might be biased but I still get to share my view of it, that's fair. what I said probably didn't come off as polite, but you know, fuck that.
Man, this guy sucks! No, I'm honestly joking. (ha) He's incredible. However, I probably wouldn't have had an exposure to Gary if he didn't perform with Jeff Buckley during his early career.
That's the great thing and the sad thing about great offbeat artists-- they're hard to discover except through connection to more mainstream (though not less talented) artists like JB.
Some other greats I've discovered via JB: Rebecca Moore, Alim Qasimov, The Dambuilders, Elysian Fields, Joan as Policewoman, The Jazz Passengers, Seedy Arkhestra.
i'm sorry jeff did that to ya.

Yes. Because you're a dumb whore who is too busy stuffing cocks up your gaping pussy to understand the genius of Gary.
P.S. He started becoming famous due to Captain Beefheart, not Jeff
gtralisfr69 2 years ago
you're an idiot. I didn't say jeff made him famous. and his genius is nothing compared to jeff's.
