The original cut of the music video was 16 minutes long. Johnny and Faye Dunaway gave them so much good material that they were able to make it that long. It took a while, but they were able to cut it down to what you see here. The band then modified their song to fit the 6:30 music video. They sent the video to MTV and never told them how long it was out of fear they would never play it. MTV ended up playing it in heavy rotation and it became a huge hit.

To this day, Petty says he doesn't think that MTV even realizes that they were playing a music video that was over 6 minutes long that often. Perhaps they were distracting by the songs tasty licks and Johnny's awesomeness? I think so. So no, this song was not written for Johnny. It's about how the music business sucks ass and steals your soul. Johnny just happened to be in the right place at the right time (as usual) or he would have never been in this video.
