Make sure you're using a commercial grade not a retail grade of paint stripper the key ingredient you must have is:Methylene Chloride almost all the retail versions have little to none of this because of environmentally friendly issues
Bio: Doesn't lecture (officially) has never received a scholorship nor any awards for his work :( He doesn't sell any of his work. He is a simple forth generation apprentice trained French Polisher with double distinction City and Guilds Certificates in Wood Finishing and Antique Restoration having studied at the London School of Furniture in the East End and has 25 years experience as a wood restoration expert. He is quite good with wood though :)
CORRECT use of the cabinet scraper would be to remove large amount of stripper residue an to clean out your quirks (edges/corners) scraping like you did will form lines and make the wood patchy as it doesnt remove stain evenly, the only way to recoat a chair like the one you striped would be to spray coat it with a pigmented lacquer. Ideally you would want to restain using a transparent penetrative dye and enhance the figure, not cover it up!
Dude! You need much thicker PVC coated cloth gloves! You need to SOAK the chair with stripper and get some wire wool with some NUTS! Remember to wash down chair with clear water if you soda it (NOT CAUSTIC SODA, washing soda crystals, caustic soda will form a deep chemical stain reacting with the acidic wood tannins)
After the applied finish has been removed you can leech out and even up any remaining stain by washing with boiling hot washing soda. Nice guy. WOULDN'T PASS NVQ Level 1 wood finishing in the UK.
WRONG!!! Do NOT use a wire brush, too aggressive. Use methylene dichloride solvent stripper and a coarse wire wool. Do NOT use latex vinyl surgical gloves, the solvent will ruin them in 5 seconds if you are stripping properly. Do NOT use a cabinet scraper, one chair will take you two days, you will get blisters and you will deeply scratch your chair. DO apply plenty of stripper and allow to soak and wire wool off two, three or four times.
@BambinoMiko lol i went on about NDP because they had an ad. if your not canadian im sure you dont know what im talking about lol. what i was saying related to the video was he didnt fully strip all the stain out.
I am currently removing paint from one of my bathrooms that had tiny cracks all over the surface and mold growing. I used a product called citristrip gel. spray on or paint on, the paint comes off after letting it sit for 30 min to an hour or so. easier to use then scrapping.
Speak up dude!
