Moped laws are different. Texas keeps a list of moped brands. Some 50 cc bikes are not on the list, but if the dealer fills out paperwork certifying the model won't go over 30 mph, then the bike can be registered as a moped. The difference? 15 year olds can ride mopeds with a moped license you get by taking a written test and anyone with a drivers license can ride it too. If it is classified as a motorcycle you need a motorcycle license. My Aprilia 50 cc is a motorcycle. It goes 42 mph.

Holy shit. That bowling alley at the start of the film is/was on San Gabriel Blvd just south of Las Tunas Drive/Main St. in San Gabriel, CA. I grew up in that area. The earliest memory I have of that area is around 1979 but I don't remember the moped store.

Yes. Anything under 50 cc is considered a moped in the US. All mopeds are automatic transmission. You can't take them on many roads because the max. speed is 30 mph. You must be 15 years old or older and need a moped driver's license and helmet. They are not common here. We have a lot of motorcycles though.

Thanks for posting that. As a kid I had a Sachs almost indentical to the one in the video, as well as a Motobecane, and a Garelli rebadged as a "General" that would hit 45MPH downhill and 35 on level ground.

We Brits of course had the 'Sports Moped' 50cc of raw unbridled power. Until the government castrated them on 1st August 1977.. I had that 'sachs' too, in the form of a Puch Maxi standard vairent then later , a sport with the seperate petrol tank. Not forgetting my fantastic NVT easy rider, which was a 2 speed auto with Franco Morini engine.

For the most part, yes. Most states specified automatic transmissions. Some of the early mopeds from the 50s and 60s had manual transmissions, but they were mostly considered small motorcycles.
