Suicide is irrational.

People think that by committing suicide they'd be happier than they are now. But after they commited suicide they would just cease to exist (unless there is some sort of afterlife). It makes no sense to say that something non-existent is better off than something else. By definition, non-existent things can't BE anything, let alone happier than existent things.

So suicide wouldn't be an end to your pain - there would be no 'you' to experience the end of that pain.

For instance, Some may rather cease to exist by a quick and (relatively) painless death rather than say, starvation, a life of disgrace and imprisonment, or just some other generally unhappy life. Suicide isn't irrational as much as it is simply an alternative to a painful existence. Though I do not recommend it in most situations.

I have an idea how to help curtail suicide. You could impose massive "fines" for suicide. Fines? How do you fine a dead person? If the government passed a law that states that people that commit suicide automatically forfeit their entire estate to the government (a portion of which goes to suicide prevention & hot lines) it would decrease. After all our government is compassionate. And what could be more compassionate then seizing the deceased's estate, or the surviving kin's inheritance?
