I see so many comments abt tabla players. These ppl are only as human as u and I can be. To them it's not who is better n who is not. Yes they are in constant competition n constant fight to be better, but only with themselves. Outdoing themselves n learning more ways to render a piece is their high, n most others here is see get a high on comparing these very dedicated n simple humans.

There are many good Tabla players. But there is only one Zakir Hussain. He is a musician's musician. Beyond that he is a great person. Other musicians deserve our respect too. It takes a lifetime of hardwork to become good. Fortunately, I know most of the top-class musicians, singers etc. and I salute them all. By showing respect for them, I canget their blessing and learn a little bit. Humility is the first step in learning music.

zakir hussain is the rock star among tabla players. there are many components to tabla playing as the players on this forum will understand. at this high a level of playing, there is no BEST. there is a categorically accepted group of people considered to be the best in the world but there is no one leader. zakir's fame really comes to the west because of his incorporation of tabla into western tradition. he is a fusion player. that and his showmanship are what have made him famous.

how am i being jealous? it's a fact. zakir hussain incorporates his style to create a more fusion style of playing, more palatable to westerners who might not understand traditional hindustani classical. he's also fairly youthful-looking, and he's got lineage. there's no doubting for a second that he is amongst the greatest tabla players alive. but he IS a rock star amongst tabla players. i really don't see how i'm being jealous, but you're entitled to your opinion.

sspunjablahore ji, I doubt ur knowledge about tabla, No one is near to Zakir Ji. Your comments are biased bcoz Tari Ji is from Lahore and you r also from the same place, bt that doesn't make Tari Ji better than Zakir Ji. I like tari's Tabla, bt Zakir is the Besssssst. Everyone knows.

@latikathakur I agree. Their Ustads were guru bhais and they are of the same lineage. They are both amazing artistes. Comparing these Tabla players is like comparing colours. You can really say one is better. The answer would therefore be opinionated.

THE ULTIMATE.....till date.... Tari can take lessons from him...if he wishes...its still not late for him.............Tari is predominantly a ghazal/light classical accompanists ...no way near Zakir ji.......or even Swapan ji..Aninda ji & others....

@BABAMUGHALBABASAHEB Are you saying that Ustad Tari Khan is shit? He is quite amazing. Tarji has the utmost respect for Zakirji and realizes that Zakirji is a stalwart in Tabla playing and humbly bows to him for that. Ustad Zakir Hussain is also quite fond of Ustad Tari Khan.
