In your descriptioin below, you might have gotten it backwards. if you like the show, you will NOT like the movie. Everyone I know who has never seen the show liked it. :)
and the whole issue with racebending and stuff. I would've been ok with it if it wasn't for the denial given by both Shyamalan and Paramount, and them claiming they've got the best actors indiscriminately for the role. Now after watching the movie, I don't think anyone could seriously believe these are the best actors a big name like Paramount and 150 million dollars of budget could have gotten.
special effects in themselves were nice, but generally it was done pretty incoherently, you have someone literally waving their arms for a few seconds, and then 1 or 2 seconds later something happens. I say what this movie needed was a different script writer more than anything. Shyamalan literally wrote down what he was thinking while the storyline progresses, and that's why everyone pretty much explains everything everytime they talk.
I was a fan of the show. Got into it first because finally they managed to show some East Asian elements in a Movie without East Asian being all those stereotypes you see in other stuff. Hated the movie though. Doesn't like the casting that much, Dav Patel was nice, but really think he should be Sokka instead. Hate the fighting choreography, maybe that's because I was an immigrant who came form a town that is just beside the Shaolin temple and my expectations for martial arts were abit too high
you thought the martial arts were fantastic? omg they were FANTASTIC? kinda feel sorry for you that you see their half done emo attempt at martial arts were fantastic. for all I know, they don't even have an action choreographer who knows any martial arts for this movie and you thought the martial arts were FANTASTIC? then what you think of The Forbidden Kingdom then?
wow i wish i had seen your vids when you made this. Just found them resently and i like them.
Anyway, my mistake was that this was my summer movie. When they announced they were going to be making it that probley where it all went wrong. Being a huge fan of the show I was as exited when the Harry Potter movies came out. After seeing the movie, I left the cinema furious and ranting about how it was so wrong. I wanted and still want to make my own version when im able.
I'm about to be a geek, but it was actually penguin-sledding. XD Fire lord ozai. A lot of the acting was terrible. Uncle Iroh was all wrong, although the actor was good. Oh, plus the earth benders were SURROUNDED by earth and it was unrealistic.
I agree. I loved the series. All three books of them. I can't wait to see Toph, to be honest! Anyway, what's with Uncle Iroh not liking tea as much? And I always got the "funny old guy" feeling from the character. But the movie, he was more brooding, though his kindness was true to the character. Oh, and another thing. Aren't they supposed to be able to use their Chi to create fire? But in the movie, they had to actually have a fire source around. wonder why they did that.
@Foursworn I'm all for Sammo Hung as Iroh, racist or not, when you have an actor that can actually resemble what the source material made a character out to be, less work is needed. and with Sammo, he frigging knows what he's doing in terms of action, Shaun Toub needed a lot of training to get all the firebending parts right, and frankly I don't think it was all that nice, but you don't need to train Sammo.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but am a fan of the TV show.
Got to like it quite late, having seen it at a few spread moments and never thought of it as anything special. Then, Nickelodeon showed a marathon of the entire series from start to finish and after watching through all that, I was stuck.
I was considering to watch the movie on the cinema, but from what I've read here it is not what it's cracked up to be.
@SweLink88 If you enjoyed the series, there's some good news for you. Nickelodeon has another season coming out taking place further into the future. I believe it deals with the ancestors of Aang, Katara, and Sokka.
I never watched it but I heard about it. Aang's voice wasn't the same as in the movie, and the arrow on his head was almost invisible! And yea, I heard Sokka wasn't funny and I was like "WTF?!?!" because he's the comedian in the TV show! The creator's really screwed up the movie.

I mean what the heck how often are you going to find a fire? I have no idea how the fire nation even got this war started.
i was disappointed as far as being a fan of the show. sokka wasn't funny katara wasn't sincere. oh and iroh never once mentioned tea. they didn't have suki and she is an important character. that being said it was a good movie, and it disappointed me the least out of movies i went to see in the past year and a half.
I am a HUGE fan of the series , I felt that they left out a lot of Soka's humur aswell , and they missed the part where the water master that tought Ang , refused to teach Katara because she was a girl . They missed a lot of key points , that they could have put in and made the movie what at most 20 minutes longer, and i agree that the effects were fanominal , but the actors were not the best , I think that the director should has watched the series from end to end , I give this movie a 6/10 .
yes he beat the raid with A GIANT FISH NO TIDAL WAVE plus the prison that haru was on it was on a boat plus it was katara that inspired them to earth bend not aang or "ong"
Also, that in the t.v. show, ang (sorry if misspelled) made a spherical ball of air that he rode on all the time. I was expecting him to do that, but he didn't in the movie. :(
i really liked the movie. Sure, a lot got left out, but anyone who was expecting a carbon copy of the cartoon is being idiotic, because it would never be possible, no matter who directed.
god the thing i hated most about it ( havent seen the movie :P) is ang cause in the movie you can see that he's fat and he also sounds like he's speaking trough a tube no effense this is just the information i got from the trailer
im a big fan of the show and i was really disappointed with the cast director. other than aang and prince zukko i felt no connection to the characters. no offence to some of the actors but i would be happy with a recast for the second movie
I am one of the biggest fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon and when I saw the movie I was greatly disappointed. But I thought the costumes, props, and scene design stayed true to the cartoon, but the actors didn't make me believe it. They left out so much from the cartoon that it made me sad, and I also think they could have made it longer. And one thing that really bugged me was there was no Kyoshi Warriors. I love them and Suki and I wonder how they are going to put her into the movie.
I agree with you that Sokka (I don't know if thats right) should be more funny in the movie like he is in the the TV show. Also the avatar state, I've at least seen him doing that more than sevens time which is sad because I thought every time he did it was cool.
I've seen a few episodes of the show here and there and i liked them so i was excited to go see the movie. During the movie i was led to believe that the whole point of the movie was for Aang to master all the elements, so that's what i was expecting until the end when he defeated the fire nation and that was it. The movie was over. He didn't master fire or earth so why is the movie over? So i left the theater confused and a little angry. lol.
@snsaunders The movie follows the first season of the show fairly accurately. He effectively wins the battle for the Water Temple, but that doesn't end the war over the Fire Nation. With each season he basically masters another element. But ya, I can understand your confusion/anger!
I actually saw this movie, even though I've never seen the shows, or read the books. My dad was a fan of it, and that was the only show on so we watched it. The movie was alright, I liked the effects, but I felt like it was the same mood throughout the movie, nothing really jumped out =/
DUDE this shit was suppose to be bigger than harry potter this was suppose to be a fucking successor to star wars or just as big but M wat ever the fuk his name is (not important) had to but rape the FUCK out of a unique series BUT WAT PISSED ME OFF THE MOST IS THE LAST SCENE WHERE AANG NOT UNG IS STANDING ON THE HUGH WALL OK AANG CREATS A HUGH WAVE AND THATS IT BUT IN THE FUKING SERIES AANG MAKE A GIANT FISH THING AND JUST WREAKS SHIT......M wat ever the fuk ur name is please die slow :)
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've heard it was awful. And now I see why. When you convert from one media thing to another, you need to touch base with BOTH of your intended audiences (fans of the show versus nonfans) and this movie apparently does neither. I think M Night depended on superfans to make this movie "successful", which even that couldn't hold up. Disappointment.
I loved the show, bout to go see it friday, hopefully. But, I'm just wondering, did they leave it really open for a new season? since you said he scared away the fire nation in avatar state..
@xDJxRAMENxSPRINKLEx Ya, they definitely left it open for a sequel. He scared them away in that particular battle but the war itself is far from over.
i think the movie was a little good, it could been so much better to be honest, i like the actor who plays aang, i think he can pull the character with much better directions, the only thing that i don't like is the editing, the movie is so fast thatthey throw you all the scenes, and also it needs transitions its to fast the movie i think a 2 hours and half movie coud be better for this movie, i really want a sequel to improve the flaws of the movie
I was so excited when the trailers came out and I still really want to see this movie (it sucks though that Australia has to wait until september to see it!!! so I have to wait even longer!!) :( but I also expect that it won't be all that great... such an awesome series can't be made into a movie and still keep all of it's awesomeness... (if that makes sense) lol
I LOVED the cartoon though! one of my favourites! :)
Hahaha where's my comment? Well I wrote it after the negative stuff that you said, saying that I wasn't gana watch it in the theater and just wait to rent it because of what you said. But then after hearing the positives and your really good point about why we should go see it, I changed my mind and retracted my comment :) I'm gana go see it this weekend! And no, I'm not just doing because you said to, I grew up with the show and absolutely loved it, so I'm actually pretty syked!
I enjoyed the movie. I was also a fan of the series. I loved, loved, loved the scene with the earthbenders! I hope they someday get their own sequel going. I too was disappointed at the fact Aaang didn't show his full potential. But I loved the ending when they all bowed to him and he had this nervous look to him! It bothered me that they changed the pronunciation of the main characters' names. I didnt care for the water nation's princess. i felt they could have gone with a better actress.
I can't belive I missed your bew video - I feel bad that I'm 2 days late.
I haven't seent he series and aren't planning on watchign the film but I'm thinking I might want to watch the anime - the only problem I had with it when I tried to watch it was the fact we was so kid like and didn't show much responsibility - which I know he must do near the end and grow to show that but the first 7 episodes which I watched seemed to show him as a powerful kid and not a hero - I like following a Hero!
@esdorin It's funny. The trailers got me really pumped for it. My only concern was Zuko's scar and the fact Aang didn't talk in the trailer. I figured it was because the actor was lame. But, I liked the actor! :D
@aceblade not on purpose or anything but if they took the time to make it. it would have been a awesome movie. like im not really a critic so ill agree it was good. but they could have at least learnt a little bit about the series like come on
ok ok. i will watch it just for the sake of appa and momo.
usually, here in manila. event movies like this is shown 1 or 2 days ahead of the US showing. maybe the distibutor knew in advance that this version sucks and decided not to go head to head with Eclipse. thanks for the info aceblade and i will let you know after i watch this on june 16 here in manila.
@misspandapie haha, I'm sorry. I read into that and it made sense why it was cut. I think one love interest for Sokka was enough for the first movie. And the plan was to put them in the second movie...I just hope we get a second one!
@LaNuzaWorks I had a look at a cam capture of the movie...lol, the quality is sooo, soo bad. Sometimes I wonder why people even bother with that quality of illegal download.
@aceblade No, i dont like the cam capture. i have to wait maybe 3 to 4months before a good copy or dvd rip is available. i will not waste good money to buy original dvd if this one is a real junk! but, i have to watch it in the theater as i said or wrote. just for the sake of appa and ok, momo too!
How the hell do you mispronounce the main protaganists names? I mean, this is based off a popular animated series and Aang's name is said at least 8 times per episode! jeez!
good???????? i stood up and screamed "NOOOO!!!!" there was almost a riot at our theatre.... 0.o
be mean to the actresses!!! its not that hard to act!! COME ON!!! (Firelord ozai? lol) and god i hated that movie.... remember your rant on The Knowing?? my rant could kick that rant's butt... lol jk :)
god i hated taht movie... i feel like tossing my computer aside cuz i hated it so much...... <.< BLAH
i agree with most your main pts.
end scene=WTF *screams again* glad you talked about this
@amandaymaddie The end scene made me want to scream too. Especially after how cool it was to see the Moon and Ocean spirits swimming about just like in the TV show. :)
cool i was not planing on watching it becose my expectetion went to zero after a few review i guess ill give it a try my espectations are now back to wat i was expecting
and Iroh was really carefree. Who did wanted to spend his time with Zuko to drink some tea. He was also a father figure and wise old mad to zuko, setting that feel that he really is Iroh. Setting a side to the jolly old fat man which I was actually a bit glad...(dont hate me I did wanted him but at the same time I wanted the appearance of that type of character) if you watch it and look at the beauty and seriusness of the Avatar world and for its character, its a good movie. Matt's right...
Man, I guess I won't bother seeing it. Avatar was one of the only 'anime-ish' shows that I like.. in fact I love the show. If I wasn't such a critical person I might be able to see it and enjoy it but from what you've said I would probably fixate on the annoying changes (like the different name pronunciations.. wtf).
Unbreakable was amazing as well. I only saw it for the first time a few years ago and I'm disappointed at myself for not seeing it in theaters lol.
@ramltfaw If you're a big fan of the show, I would recommend checking out the movie. If you go on a theater cheap night, you can see it for less than the price of a rental. It's worth a look. :)
I really liked Noah Ringer for his first movie. The pronoucaition did kinda go the asain way though which is all honestly I wished it didnt. The movie did show the audience the seriousness of the storylihne. I study a bit of mix martial arts not much but I do and I really appreciated showing the different forms of tai chi. I really enjoyed Sokka and Iroh. I thought he was a bit funny but I thought he was true to the character too. Sokka was always serious and sarcastic. I liked it.
i totally agree. Dont even start with it. I thought i was alittle funny. But I am seeing potential of it being really funny. Okay, as for the series... The movie had little time to really show Aang as a child, in fact it really showed me that Aang wanted to be a child in the movie...idk, I really liked Iroh. he was carefree in the movie.
Omg nevermind...you said everything I thought it was...I really liked it though. the movie.
@Protocall13o2 lol, oh you. I just would have liked the characters to show off their true nature more. I found them more bland than they needed to be. :(
@aceblade I do have to agree on that... I mean there is alot of potential to see more of each and every character but Like I mentioned that the movie was kinda going at a steady slow pace. And it only started to pick up towards the middle... The movie was meant to go a little detour though. It was striaght out og the show but I was expecting that. You cant say it went totally out the window and the other way from Avatar... *cough* dragonball z ...*cough* if you know what I mean...
I agree. I didn't like the change of pronounciation for the character names.
There were little details that made me laugh, like Uncle Iroh drinking tea. That kind of stuff.
I didn't find that the ending was that much of a let-down... The non-violent thing with Aang just being like "Yeah, I'm not going to kill anyone" was much more in character for him.
Another thing I didn't like was the fact that they played up Zutara. I'm not a fan, and the whole "the avatar can't have a family" bugged me
@ZorasSapphire Aang not killing is in character for him, but not when he's in the Avatar state. He doesn't come close to controlling it until the 3rd season. That frustrated me, but I understand why they chose to go that route. I just felt it wasn't in line with the TV show. :(
@aceblade Mmm, yes. I do agree that in his Avatar state he's not really aware. The movie however, doesn't give me the sense that he doesn't know what he's doing while in the Avatar state. That's why I didn't mind it, though I would have liked it more if the Ocean Spirit had flipped out on the fire benders like it did in the show.
@kramermuxx You're right about the directness. Sometimes Katara was narrating things that was obvious. "My brother likes the Water Princess." ...duh.. lol
@aceblade I particularly enjoyed when they met with the earth benders. the kid introduces with "This is my father" I sat there waiting for more and realized they just wasted 2 seconds of my valuable movie watching time. When they could have simply let us find out that it really doesnt even matter.
The last scene could have been so much better if they would have used some dramatic silence instead of the music they used. It ruined the mood.
And the effects for the bending were cool, the martial art moves were nice, but it didn't feel like they were manipulating the elements to me. The movements weren't matching what the elements actually did a lot of the time...
I'm not a fan of the series, I never really got into it, and I thought it was awful, although I did have a good time going to see it, laughed a lot, although most "at" the movie rather than "with" (highlight could be the epic "woooooooo" war cry xD )
I also thought the acting was terrible.....
The movie felt so rushed, they were jumping all over the place trying to cram so much into a couple hours
...and the entire time I was sitting there "It's super effective!" kept popping up in my mind
PENGUINS!!!!! Gah they could have done so much better. I was watching the movie and it felt like I was watching some film that someone badly edited. Like they cut down parts just to fit the time limit for the movie. Sokka, Aang, Zuko, and Uncle were the only ones I thought fit well besides the water princess. I mean Your right Zuko's scar could have been better because it was on like one forth of his face not just his eye but he pulled the character off. I wish and hope this movie gets redone.
I regret the fact that I wasn't able to see the show when it was still on tv. I will ,however, watch the movie despite that. I'll probably get the dvds of the show and watch those. I was soo surprised to hear that they wanted to make a sequel to Unbreakable. Too bad they couldn't do it. I really loved that movie.
Man, I loved the show. And I too was a HUGE fan of the show, and agree with your vid 100%.
I loved the Aang/Blue Spirit scene, the last fight between Aang and Zuko, and that whole montage of fighting when Aang was trying to get to the outer wall of the Northern Water Tribe.
And I thought all of the acting was great! It was the stupid scripting done by M. Knight. But if they make a sequel, which would make me the happiest person alive, I would pray they get someone else to write the script.
@aceblade I know right? I saw the movie again (because people say watching the movie the first time brings your expectations down so low, the second viewing becomes amazing)
And it was SO much better. And the things that confused me started to make sense.
I recommend a second viewing to anyone who was dissapointed with it the first time
there was no pro it was all bad

I am one of the biggest fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon and when I saw the movie I was greatly disappointed. But I thought the costumes, props, and scene design stayed true to the cartoon, but the actors didn't make me believe it. They left out so much from the cartoon that it made me sad, and I also think they could have made it longer. And one thing that really bugged me was there was no Kyoshi Warriors. I love them and Suki and I wonder how they are going to put her into the movie.
TheLegendOfRandi 1 year ago
i agree with this
themutantgerbil 1 year ago
I agree with you that Sokka (I don't know if thats right) should be more funny in the movie like he is in the the TV show. Also the avatar state, I've at least seen him doing that more than sevens time which is sad because I thought every time he did it was cool.
HirokoManzaku 1 year ago
I've seen a few episodes of the show here and there and i liked them so i was excited to go see the movie. During the movie i was led to believe that the whole point of the movie was for Aang to master all the elements, so that's what i was expecting until the end when he defeated the fire nation and that was it. The movie was over. He didn't master fire or earth so why is the movie over? So i left the theater confused and a little angry. lol.
snsaunders 1 year ago
@snsaunders The movie follows the first season of the show fairly accurately. He effectively wins the battle for the Water Temple, but that doesn't end the war over the Fire Nation. With each season he basically masters another element. But ya, I can understand your confusion/anger!
aceblade 1 year ago
I actually saw this movie, even though I've never seen the shows, or read the books. My dad was a fan of it, and that was the only show on so we watched it. The movie was alright, I liked the effects, but I felt like it was the same mood throughout the movie, nothing really jumped out =/

Disappointment.

i think the movie was a little good, it could been so much better to be honest, i like the actor who plays aang, i think he can pull the character with much better directions, the only thing that i don't like is the editing, the movie is so fast thatthey throw you all the scenes, and also it needs transitions its to fast the movie i think a 2 hours and half movie coud be better for this movie, i really want a sequel to improve the flaws of the movie

Dixavd 1 year ago
@Dixavd Ya, Aang assumes the role of the hero because he pretty much has to. If he had it his way, I'm sure he'd like to just do kid things. :)

and Iroh was really carefree.
Protocall13o2 1 year ago

aceblade 1 year ago
I really liked Noah Ringer for his first movie. The pronoucaition did kinda go the asain way though which is all honestly I wished it didnt. The movie did show the audience the seriousness of the storylihne. I study a bit of mix martial arts not much but I do and I really appreciated showing the different forms of tai chi. I really enjoyed Sokka and Iroh. I thought he was a bit funny but I thought he was true to the character too. Sokka was always serious and sarcastic. I liked it.
Protocall13o2 1 year ago
i totally agree.
Omg nevermind...you said everything I thought it was...I really liked it though. the movie.
Protocall13o2 1 year ago
@Protocall13o2 lol, oh you. I just would have liked the characters to show off their true nature more. I found them more bland than they needed to be. :(
aceblade 1 year ago
@aceblade I do have to agree on that... I mean there is alot of potential to see more of each and every character but Like I mentioned that the movie was kinda going at a steady slow pace. And it only started to pick up towards the middle... The movie was meant to go a little detour though. It was striaght out og the show but I was expecting that. You cant say it went totally out the window and the other way from Avatar... *cough* dragonball z ...*cough* if you know what I mean...
Protocall13o2 1 year ago
I'm not a fan, and the whole "the avatar can't have a family" bugged me
ZorasSapphire 1 year ago
Azula's got the creepy grin down pat. xD
ZorasSapphire 1 year ago
@ZorasSapphire haha, she totally does. I was impressed.
aceblade 1 year ago
@ZorasSapphire Aang not killing is in character for him, but not when he's in the Avatar state. He doesn't come close to controlling it until the 3rd season. That frustrated me, but I understand why they chose to go that route. I just felt it wasn't in line with the TV show. :(
aceblade 1 year ago
@aceblade Mmm, yes. I do agree that in his Avatar state he's not really aware. The movie however, doesn't give me the sense that he doesn't know what he's doing while in the Avatar state. That's why I didn't mind it, though I would have liked it more if the Ocean Spirit had flipped out on the fire benders like it did in the show.
ZorasSapphire 1 year ago

I saw it in 3D. halfway through i forgot i even had the glasses on.
And the writing in the movie was way to direct. they should have let the audience experience more instead of simply stating every little thing.
kramermuxx 1 year ago
