i got a couple questions for you. i just rescued a 3 year old black and white tegu. im not sure if its columbian or argentine. how do you tell the difference? also i got him about 3 days ago. hes pretty feisty. whats the best way to tame him? how long does it normally take to tame them?
on the taming thing..put a shirt into his tank so he gets used to your smell.when you get him out wear two shirts so that he can hide under one shirt and you won't get scratched
So by reading these comments its takes time for your pet Tegu to trust you which I can see. I am thinking of either getting a Tegu or a Nile Monitor Lizard. I think both would be tough to tame
can you give me some tips on taming a young tegu it keeps trying to whip me and bite me every time i reach in for me. its no more then six inches i would appreciate the help
Sure. First be patient, nobody can tame a tegu in one day, or one week. Do not force your tegu trying to pick him up or touch him; until he comes to you first. How do you make the tegu come to you? That's easy.
yah my tegu gets a little nervous when I pick him up... kinda wiggles his tail in circles throwing himself off balance. But once he's close to my body he's much more relaxed knowing he won't fall.
Bubba lets you pick her up from her cage because she knows you are taking her outside. After 45 minutes of roaming in the backyard she will let you pick her up again, but if she doesn't feel like it was enough time, she will stiffen her whole body in a way that I have to place her back on the ground. Then I pet, and talk so she relaxes back and carry her next to my body back to her cage.

No. It's better to get a special one from a petshop. Reptiles kept inside the house need an alternate supply of sun rays.

Argentine tegu are black and white and very tame, while colombians are reddish and more skittish.

An argentine black and white tegu would be much easier to tame than a nile monitor.

I have noticed that they also can be attracted to your body heat as you hold them. It seems to have a calming effect.

Place a piece of clothing or garment with your scent inside his container for a whole week, and then try to pick him up.
