If you go to original sources, you'll realise that the problem wasn't the winter, it was the summer. Of some 500,000 men lost, about 350,000 were lost during the approach to Moscow, and "only" about 150,000 during the retreat. The retreat started late because winter was very late, but very harsh that year. The Russians did fight, first at Smolensk, and then at Borodino, which was the bloodiest single day of battle before the Somme.

The French occupied Moscow on 14-16 Sept 1812, and the majority of troops began the Retreat on 18th-19th Sept. And yes, you're right - after Borodino, they needed some serious R&R. The 30eme, which is the regiment I studied in depth, entered Russia 3808 strong, were approx 1500-1800 at the start of Borodino, and 364 were left at the end of the battle. But Moscow would have had supplies for the winter if it hadn't caught fire/been burned (depending who you believe ;)

They involved less men on the way back, of course ! The Russians suffered from the winter, too...

The russians saw that this advantage was also the greatest weakness of the french so the russians were in fact the best tactical enemy of napoleon, they realised that they couldn't win against the french on the battlefield, so they did the only logical thing, retreating,destroying supplies and opposing were they could
