That was one one of the worst rescues I've ever seen. They were very quick, but lifting the car and just dropping it back down like they did to turn it back over can paralyze or kill a driver who has suffered a neck injury. Thank god rescuers are (usually) trained better today.
@conesussteve Here are the facts. I asked J.R. personally about this crash. Fact #1) They asked him if he was in pain, he said no. Fact #2) They asked him if his neck hurt, he said no. Fact #3) They asked him if they turned the car back over, if he thinks anything will get hurt, he said no. Fact #4) He only suffered a slight concussion, a cut under his eye and a lacerated finger. Fact #5) His helmet was cracked from this, and still has the helmet to this day at home.
I did enjoy reading Dr Steve Olvey's comments on this accident in his book "Rapid Response", and in particular the interference from concerned crew members and onlookers, where he was concerned that flipping the vehicle over may have broken the driver's neck...
The book is a fascinating read, for anybody out there who is interested in what guys like Olvey, Trammell, Bock, Hanna et al did for safety in Indycar/Champcar.
Really wierd crash, and what a luck!! Rescue teams have improved a lot since 1980! it´s was comom back the car on "4" wheels until 1994, we dont see it anymore´, nice footage tks for upload!
@illicitstill It doesn't have anything to do with it being in Arizona. It's just that we've gotten a lot smarter about driver safety in the 30+ years since the accident
He got his 'bell rung' a bit, a cut on his eye, some scrapping to his helmet but the integral roll hoop -- a safety design of Indycars for quite a while, worked. This accident happened towards the end of the race and groups of people flipped the car upright afterwards. He just rolled over his left rear tire sideways and it got underneath the car and flipped it.
I've always how he could be injured in this crash? Was his head sticking out or not well enough protected? Or was he uninjured? Thanks for the footage btw!
