I'm trying to match up the All of You he played at first with the form, but seems as though he doesn't play a full number of choruses. Is anybody else coming to the same conclusion?
Billfreaks, you are invited to a beautiful Bill Evans master class on YT! The class includes an in-depth analysis of Bill's classic solo performance "A Time for Love". You will LOVE this, promise:) Type in "Dave Frank" Bill Evans on YT.
Bill Evans is an incredibly rare combination of talent, humility, and artistic vision. That's why he's one of the very greatest Jazz musicians of all time.
this makes me cry. i wish he were still here. he could teach us so much. this conversation and recording and every recording of bill evans is priceless. he is one of the most inspirational and extraordinary musicians ever. I wonder how great he would have gotten if he couldve lived to billy taylor's or marian mcpartland's age.
I did a new solo piano transcription of this version and an accompanying interview with Chick Corea that will be in the May 2010 issue of Downbeat mag....(on the stands in May.)
Bill's version of All of You here is just ridiculous. I only have to hear 1 seconds to know that it's Bill playing. He has such a heart-melting touch, and his ability to spontaneously translate his thoughts onto the piano is inspiring.
Bill Evans was a gifted musician. On this video,he played "a waltz for debie",different than in another video. His left hand had more feel.Iquess i want to say, it was beautiful.
Evans is one of the few musicians I can listen to for days -- then have to stay away from for weeks while his phrasing works its way into my heart and soul.
Mariam McPartland held a major part in the history of American Jazz. She played for years at the Hickory House, a jazz club int NYC. Some the the musicians who played with her, called her friend as well as their savior are Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and many more. Joe Morello the drum great played with her for years before going with Dave Burbeck. Mariam was great.
I came across Marian Partkand on podcasting a couple of years ago. Since then, I've heard all of her programs with a lot of fun and interest, as well. In particular, this one is my favorate since it is very much classic jazz piece which sounds very much comfortable to me. Thanks a lot for sharing on youtube!
Does anyone know what kind of piano is being played? Any guesses? Really nice sounding. Granted 99.9% of that is Bill Evans but this piano sounds really nice in general.
I have some memory that Marian uses a Baldwin in the studio where she tapes her show, but you may wish to check to see if she has a website and gives the detail.
Bill Evan's true virtuosity shows here. He is a mature player, and even he realizes that studying his older recording. I personally think his drug use transcended him above that of a regular musical mind.(i dont want people saying "mozart didn't do drugs". I know that. But it's no doubt psychoactives change the way you think and henceforth how you interpret and play music)
The sad thing is that today's young music consumer has heard NIN and Britney Spears but couldn't tell you who Bill Evans was. They're missing their whole misical heritage and something very beautiful and unique. What was it Duke Ellington said?
"There are only two types of music. Good music and bad music."
True but Duke was still right. There are only two types, good and bad, but it's up to you to determine which is which and that all depends on how you analyze it.
Britney Spears = VERY Bad Music Haha. I love jazz, but it's not the 'only' good music, (but i do love it). But, i definitley agree that everyone is missing out. Jazz was (and still is in many ways) a trail blazing style of music... it was not respected as music in the begining. Just like some good music nowadays.. (something to remember),... but i'm definitley not talking about Britney Spears!
Bill's short little thing here of All of You, it's a testament of the fact that the limitations are not limitless... musically I think Bill goes just as far out into the stratosphere as Coltrane did, and he does it within the walls of conventional jazz
@jamssmith This has been one of greatest wishes in life , ever since a friend sent me a tape of Marian and Bill discussing piano playing. Please the Powers who have the original recordings, I beg you to release a CD - please!!!

A Marian McPartland interview results in double the pleasure for the listening public.
Her personal musical talent is equal to the guest she interviews. Two stars for the price of one.
She just clicks with who ever is on the stool on the day. Amazing,
