If you like this try searching Jimmy Bowskill...the guy looks just like the guitarist Paul Kossoff and plays so good he impressed Paul Rogers himself. Some guitarists today carry on this sound and Jimmy Bowskill is one of them
@professoricon Kind of a shame really... I totally loved the gruff crackle he had in Tons of Sobs. Totally the biggest influence on my own singing in The Gypsy Bangles!
@professoricon Yeah very True. Robert Plant is but a shadow of his former self/voice. However Paul Rodgers voice is actually pretty amazing considering his vintage...
absolutely the tops!! great choice!! I am 52 yrs old and this takes me back to my youth, when we all felt wronged, god, how wrong we were!! I just hope we never forget classics like this!!! Paul and the rest of the band were iconic geniuses!!!
"Let me hold your tongue oh! I know you'll understand the way I feel" He's not referring to where her taste buds are either, he just wants to play with the womans hot spot. Very alpha male.
I love this song too, and I wish I could find the tab for it and more on youtube. Funny, but whenever I do a search or google 'free woman' I don't get the results I'm looking for!

@fellowvoyager these passages are from page #17 of The Companions of Jehu written by Alexandre Dumas pere--"Sir, I have heard speak of the Companions of Jesus," replied the magistrate with his jeering smile. "The Jesuits, you mean? That is not what I am seeking, sir."....Elisha consecrated Jehu King of Israel, on condition that he exterminate the house of Ahab; Elisha was Louis XVIII; Jehu was Cadoudal; the house of Ahab, the Revolution.
Hmm.. seeing that you are the only guy in this thread endorsing their version, I would say you don't represent most people.
Don't get me wrong, it's great that Three Dog Night did a cover of this song. Gave Free some early exposure, but let's not kid ourselves. The original is seldom topped.
Especially if that original is the mighty Paul Rodgers.

One of the UK's premier bands of the era. Blew Hendrix away when he heard this outfit the first time.
PR...one of the great soul singers of any time, any place, any color! Seen him with Badco 4 times and with Jimmy as well. So powerful & bluesy. Just fucking amazing simply said.
The remastered version of "Tons of Sobs" includes eight bonus tracks, the last of which is a different (better) version of "over the green hills" taken from the live BBC sessions.
shit I know what you mean man...Koss just feels every note he plays deep down. there's no other guitarist like him. I mean Hendrix and Page and others are amazing, and they dazzle with a mixture of technique and soul, but in terms of pure soul Kossoff wins hands down.

professoricon, I too love this track, and it was always great live, as well. In fact, I think Free's self-titled album may be my favourite of the band's six studio albums, owed greatly to the masterful vocals of Mr Paul Rodgers. On this album he demonstrated that he was technically and emotionally exceptional, as well as having probably the most powerful Rock voice ever. His voice is particularly anguished and smouldering on this album. Great stuff!
I think PR has a great rock voice, but there are many others to equal him (IMHO): Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, insert your favourites. However, singing the blues, there is just no-one better (or equal), and I include Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Al Green, or anyone else.
