i have a slim desktop is it ok if i buy a power supply but just put it next to the computer can i do that?

@kerlan and crwl8: the extra 4 pins have been added to motherboards in the last 5 years to supply more current for THE SAME rail in the first 20 pins. discrete graphics are powered by connectors on the respective card.

what does the 4 pin off the 20+4 pin even do? is it needed??

@Kerlan It powers the pci-e slot so in theory if the slot is unused the board sould work with just the 20pins, although I've never attempted this.
