My first car was a 65 GTO...when I blew the factory motor ( which I found out was a 326 ) I replaced it with a 421 out of an old Catalina. I can vouch for the fact that it was one kick-ass motor!!
@CentricParts LOVE that cruise, I used to go with my friend and his Grandpa who is a GM executive, we got to take a monte carlo pace car and then hang out in the GM racing bus all day and go "behind the scenes" of the displays, etc. It was AWESOME.
Saw this Pontiac at Bob's Resturant in Burbank, CA. this summer with all of it's paper work, It had Jim Wangers name printed on the built sheet and 421 H.O next to it. I call it, the "Holy Grail" of GTO's.
The Ferrari was a little piece of forign tin that should have stayed in Italy. Sure it was quick, not as quick as the Pontiac, but thats only because it weighed about 80 pounds, not because any pavement pounding POWER like the REAL automobile called the GTO.
@MrRightwingextreme at that time american cars were the best in the world.. the main reason were the world wars because america didn't have their industy complexes bombed like that was the case in europe.. and ferrari did go around corners much better than this huge GTO which is also a beautiful car.. somewhere around 1978-1980 american auto industry took a big downturn in quality nad it never recovered completely
I remember February 16, 1963, at Challenge Cup 250, Daytona Speed Weeks, where Paul Goldsmith/Ray Nichels, Car # 50, 1963 Pontiac Tempest Lemans 421 Super Duty ( 2 x 4 barrel carbs) Won the race by over 5 miles, beating the defending Champs Ferrari GTO ! No wonder Pontiac named their new Muscle Car the Pontiac GTO !
The gentleman with the dark blue jacket & brown pants by the Goat is Jim Wangers & was responsible for having this car get the 421 HO motor in it before being featured in the 1964 Car & Driver article which not only put the GTO on the map but Car & Driver as well. 0-60 in 4.6 sec. NOt really, BUT thats what Car & Driver reported.
