Which also prompted him to use more of a nasally voice in City of Evil and their Self-Titled album. He performed all of 2004 (including this video) and parts of 2003 in extreme pain. Obviously you can hear in this performance that his screams don't sound too pretty.

His scream is definitely different in this video. Listen to other live versions of it. Like 2003 at warped. His voice is so weak in this performance, it's close to blowing out. Doctor's told him if he kept going, he had months before he would have become completely mute.

Man I remember listening to this back when it first came out, before they even made Waking the Fallen. Hearing the chorus was like hearing a close friend that knew exactly what I was going through. I wish their new stuff still had this kind of beauty and power.

@volainge09 I think it has less to do with money and making a living and more to do with label politics. As soon as A7X signed to Warner Bros. Records, their music became more mainstream. No screaming, no really heavy shit, because a major label wouldn't support that shit because it doesn't sell. However, the music scene is alot different than it was back then, with screaming bands consistently realeasing records that chart in the billboard top ten.

@klolklolklolk alright then name a band that sound ANYTHING like avenged sevenfold. remotely even close to the stuff they put out now. there's only so much you can do in the metalcore genre. only so many riffs you can reconstruct and only so many ways to can scream a verse and sing a chorus. they evolved into a band that can get away with playing any type of music. the songs on stst are too long, and poorly structured. the songs on nightmare are long, but each part has substance.

I still love this band. I personally even think the self-titled album was A7X's best. But at the same time nothing can silence Waking the fallen and Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. I just wish they played We Come Out At Night these days.

@PerfectWeaponA7X its not though really. it not TERRIBLE, but they are 1000x better now then they were during this time. the fact is that he does sound terrible here. you can tell his voice couldnt handle this type of screaming so he stopped. he isn't breathing correctly when he screams. now? he has one of the most unique voices in the history of rock. unique enough for slash to use on his solo album. i didn't love city of evil but the self titled and nightmare were their two best albums

theyre so much better now its ridiculous. waking the fallen was their best album, but sounding the seventh trumpet is just a bad one... and no wonder he stopped screaming like that.. he sounds terrible here. the screaming on god hates us sounds like he wont murder his voice like he did back then

@klolklolklolk alright then name a band that sound ANYTHING like avenged sevenfold. remotely even close to the stuff they put out now. there's only so much you can do in the metalcore genre. only so many riffs you can reconstruct and only so many ways to can scream a verse and sing a chorus. they evolved into a band that can get away with playing any type of music. the songs on stst are too long, and poorly structured. the songs on nightmare are long, but each part has substance.

actually he has had a minor surgery of some sort but it didnt have anything to do with his screaming or anything, matt didn't want to continue screaming throough all their albums, he wanted to start singing more. thoguh nowadays he does scream at some parts of their live shows to show people that he can still scream :)

Yeah, i thought the same way, and he's not sick, this is one of the last concerts with screaming before making City of evil, at this point his screaming became worse than his screaming 2 years before that concert, that's one of the best proofs of him having a surgery, and i DONT GIVE A FUCK what his manger said at all excess video, people are saying stuff, dosen't mean it's true, he just wanted to clear his name.

yup. if anyone wants the link, i'll send it to them how matt says himself that he had an operation to repair a blood vessel in his throat. he goes into vivid like detail, but nonetheless, i know it to be a fact that he had surgery. ppl need to accept that just because he's a rockstar doesn't mean that he's invincible. yeah, he needed surgery, didn't scream for a while, but he screams nearly as good as he used to now. :D

STST and WTF best albums by them but their new albums are ok but a metal band has to do metal albums cos the self titled album wos more rock than metal same with DITR at least in COE they tried summut that sounded like metal without screaming but his singing is now better maybe thats why he stopped screaming for a bit plus the self titled album made them loads of money but some people dont even no about A7x screaming cos all they listen to is afterlife so A7x need to bring screaming back

dude theres acctually some matt screaming in coe and self titled. liek in coe the beggining and end of beast and the harlot. and in the self titled critical acclaim( at the end of " the making" video. it shows him screaming for that song. then him and the rev were shown screaming for a little peice of heaven. n same with ditr. thers screaming here in there. its less now casue they dion singing. :D

I think Shadows had the biggest change. From screaming, wearing wifebeaters, eyeliner and waxing his hair, to dressing up like a rapper and yelling with a gravelly voice :P
I still love this band. I personally even think the self-titled album was A7X's best. But at the same time nothing can silence Waking the fallen and Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. I just wish they played We Come Out At Night these days.

Yup, though keep in mind that this is in 2004. He still does a clean voice now sometimes, but it sounds very different than the clean voice back in the STST and WTF days.
