@Haloman315 race cams, mild cams, high perfromance cams or whatever you want to call them push the valves open at a much higher rate and leave them open longer to allow more air in and out of the cylinder. the "lope" sound that you hear is actually from the engine running very sloppy because at idle alot of the exhaust is being pushed up through the intake due to long duration and valve overlap. At high rpm's the air doesnt have time to get pushed back out the wrong valve because it compresses.
@junkymustangs That is also why you lose alot of low end power when you go with a more radical cam profile compared to stock. I've seen alot of people build basically a stock low compression engine with stock heads and put a big cam in it and it runs like shit because that engines bottom end wouldnt hold up to anything over 6000rpm and they placed a cam in it that makes power between 3500-7500 rpms. Then its a pain to keep it idling while in gear, because its not making any power at 600rpm.

Blower surge is caused by compressive oscillation and the lack of a bypass valve. It's aggravated by a large cam, but that's no excuse for it. To make the engine run right, either bypass the compressed air at idle (waste it) through a valve, or *accurately* tune the engine so it will maintain a steady rpm at idle and keep the oscillation from starting. The latter is more difficult since you must accurately tune the fueling needs for all engine temperatures. It takes dozen of hours and days.
@byronrace... the two cars in the video most likely have a pop off valve or burst panel on the intake manifold. Being supercharged and not exhaust driven turbos the purpose would be for a backfire and positive over boosting which would be costly on a supercharged car without the pressure release. The idle surge is coming from being alcohol injected.

First if you want big cams dont look at a forced induction vehicle, because of the supercharger the cam is smaller. The surging forward isnt the cam its the surge from the supercharger. The largest cams you can fine will be on big cube sportsman engines.
The blower surge is not because it is overdriven the more overdrive you put in a blower the less surge you get how many top fuel or top alcohol dragsters do you hear with blower surge? NONE! They either 1. Dont know how to tune a blown alky engine or 2. Have it tuned that way for the show to make it "sound cool" a properly tuned blown injected engine should have very little to no blower surge at all unless you are trying to tune it way down

The blower is set up "over driven" which is causing the blower surge. Swapping to a larger diameter blower pulley will create a more even idle. Blown big block Impala is just too bitchin, blower surge and all.
doesn't seem like it constantly idling up then back down again close to stalling is very healthy for it, i don't see what the problem would be with setting up the idle a little bit higher, so its easy and manageable.

@mydogzty Yes it is. First of all, the title is misleading the surge you hear is from the blower. Second of all, cam size refers to the size of the lobes on the camshaft that open and close the valves. The bigger the lobes, the longer the valves stay open to let more air and fuel in to create more power. Also, the sharper the lobes, the farther they push the valves in to let more air and fuel.

It may be impressive for your average tyrekicker to see at a show, but if any of those cars went near a track (which I reckon would be rare), everyone there would be telling them to get a new cam. Believe it or not, they'd most likely pick up a few more horses and a quicker ET with a proper cam. That silver Mustang however is absolutely brilliant, and it just sounds so brutal...

@mydogzty Big as in the lobes on the shaft are so big it causes the engine to lope because huge lift is not meant for Low RPM opperationg.

Im just wonderingwould it be hard drivng a manual? Im learning manual in a Ford lazer KC 87 hatchback FWD 1.6L, and I've learnt how to use the clucth now, so just wondering if the engine is sorta revving like this at low RPM's, would it be hard to take off etc let alone to drivng manual?

@mydogzty No problem. The Ford you describe sounds like a European one, and if that's the case, I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.

@BeltDrivenMadness my neighbour says its technically based off a Mazda...so i do not know how it can be European. I was just saying that if the engine is reving or lobes like it does in the video, would that mean that the engine is reeving up then revving down (around low rpm) so the power will be coming on and off and i just thought it would be harder to take off in a manual and try not to to stall it

@mydogzty Yes it is. First of all, the title is misleading the surge you hear is from the blower. Second of all, cam size refers to the size of the lobes on the camshaft that open and close the valves. The bigger the lobes, the longer the valves stay open to let more air and fuel in to create more power. Also, the sharper the lobes, the farther they push the valves in to let more air and fuel.

I've seen 3500hp Top Doorslammers and 7000hp Top Fuellers that idle better than the blown cars in that clip. It may be impressive for your average tyrekicker to see at a show, but if any of those cars went near a track (which I reckon would be rare), everyone there would be telling them to get a new cam. Believe it or not, they'd most likely pick up a few more horses and a quicker ET with a proper cam. That silver Mustang however is absolutely brilliant, and it just sounds so brutal...
