You might consider rewinding the motor coils to get higher voltage (and power) at low RPMs. That, or rig some gears/ belts to step up the RPMs before the motor. Very nice turbine though, impressed.
Get copper pipe that will fit the wind mill pipe. Cut two ring about 1/2" to 1" wide.Find old car stater that have carbon bushing.. Try to save the carbon bushing & spring also. Mount bushing on motor base and ring on pipe. This is call slip ring. See else where on internet. You can run two wire from load to top onto ring. Make base holder for carbon bushing to ride onto slip ring. Run two wire from bushing to motor (source).
this is quite impressive man. I was looking on the net to see if you could generate power from a treadmill and you have answered my question. thanks and good luck in your further travels.
no prob. I see alot of generators homemade by many canadians. They seem to like the rebuild alternator design usually involving cams to change the gear ration wich would usually provide power like your cars ciggerette lighter.
Cool man, Way to go...I only use recycled & stuff laying around also..The only way I know to run the wire is bore a hole thru the frame then straight down tower. Rick.
What happens if the wind winds the cord around the pole? It doesn't look like slip rings are involved here to pick up the electric. Everything else looks good. I am working on a small savonius type myself right now.
most of the testimonials I have read state that the law of averages unwind the cord as often as wind it up but, mine seems to wrap the same way often. so once a week i climb up and spin her around to unwind the cord. any ideas on a maintanance free solution would be greatly appreciated.

Hey did you use the existing hub ? I have the same motor kind of wondering how to mount the blades was thinking 1/4 - 20 drill and tap.

Is there anything that needs to be done to the motor to make it a generator?
glight01 3 years ago
not at all. apparently these permanent magnet motors automaticly generate power when run in reverse.

good question about the cord winding up.
