Is there any pattern to the english concertina button layout, or is it something you just need to memorize?

Another one which I've missed!
There are one or two similar phrases. Seems to me that you have the ability to learn "by ear" even if it is not yet very well developed.
I can spot similarities but can't apply them.... In the same way I can spot other peoples spelling mistakes but can't spell myself.
