Unbelievable, I must have seen this part about soap around '94 when I was 10 and I never forgot the way this was explained. Beakman's World was as educational as it gets and what's more, it's still entertaining and funny. Too good.

Well, I'm no Beakman, but I can answer that. Lightning is caused by a built-up of electrons, the 'particles' of electricity, in storm clouds that are basically just charge up until they're so much electricity in the clouds, that it unleashes it in one giant burst, which is attracted to the opposite-charged protons of the ground.
