  • the thing that strikes me the most here is how little diff there is between gibson and the epiphone. not audible to me :P

  • lol the epiphone is for the kids. I love the goldtop look and I dig Joe's playing, but that comment is a little silly. A 500 dollar guitar is for the rich kids... the poor kids all get Ibanez Gios lol

    Customer Reviews:

I bought mine over 2 weeks ago at Guitar center and was struck by the Alpine White color, which I found out was a Custon Shop limited edition. When I got it home, I noticed that it wouldn't stay in tune and that was due to the fact that it wasn't set up properly upon the leaving the factory in China, contrary to what the inspection label ...

  • Why does the Epiphone have binding and the Gibson? In some cases, less just isn't more. Apart from in the case of Gibson costs/specs ratio. The more you pay, the less you get. :P

  • Saying that a guitar with your name on it is for kids was pretty dumb.

  • @Philtration - Obviously he didn't mean it like that.

  • Bonamassa, one of the best Blues guitarists in Modern times, and also, one of the most personable and down to earth musicians also.

  • Yes, VERY HAPPY! Glad you care :) :) :0

I have been looking at the Les Paul style of guitars for a couple of years now and just couldn't see spending

3000.00 for a Gibson Standard. Then I started looking at Epiphone Les Pauls but read a lot of negative reviews about the poor electronics that were used on their guitars. Then I saw this 1960 Tribute plus and after reading the ...

  • Great job Joe and congrat's. I want one!

  • Epiphone is not just for kids, a lot of adultts by them because of cash flow but also because the Epiphones above the $500 mark are pretty dam good and depending on the guitar better than a lot of lower priced Gibsons.

  • anybody else think the studio has the best tone?

  • @ESPsandEmgs actually it has alot to do with bridge, pickups, action and wood the pickups are the main reason for the tone beecause ive put amazing p90 pickups in a cheap ass squier and that guutar howled after and gibson owns epiphone souly on the fact that epiphone went under they bought them out is why they own them

  • @emanhacker

Yea, I put an EMG 81 in a Jackson JS20 about 15 years ago, it sure made that little piece of shit sound a lot better! But it sounds like a wet cardboard box compared to my EMG loaded Les Paul Custom, with the SAME pickups.

  • I got to play #55, i believe, of the original run pretty extensively. What a guitar!!! Still trying to replicate the tone in my current Les Paul.

  • 1:06 I turd with it a bit

  • @broBERRRY - *turned

  • I want it left-handed!!!

  • epiphone part has reverb thats y it sound a bit different.

  • Custom is the best, but that Epi sounds better than the Gibson Studio....

  • The Gibson Custom has a more "bite"

  • i have an lp studio ultra and it sounds as good if not better than the others...i hotrodded it and it looks and sounds great...

  • I own the Epi and it sounds better than a Gibson LP standard any day!! The burstbuckers really make the difference!! you can put good pickups in anything and it will sound good. Even though my Epi sounds nice and throaty acoustically anyway!! And remember it's got the extended neck tenon too, not an ordinary Epi feature!

  • I have the Gibson Les Paul Studio Bonamassa, i can only say, It is the best Gibson you can get for 2199$

  • The Epiphone sounds actually pretty good, and I noticed Joe moved a lot faster on the neck, perhaps the playing action is very nice..give it a miss Snobs, a good Guitar player can make just about any guitar sound cool, the name on the Headstock is just not the point.

  • @GalaxyHorse finally someone thinks like me. i ordered the epiphone. it has great reviews and seems nice without the gibson price!

  • Gibson Custom - 0:05

    Gibson Studio - 2:26

    Epiphone - 4:09

  • Im fed up of people saying epiphones are for kids. Im 25 and cant afford a gibson so I bought meself an epiphone instead. Its still a good guitar for feck sake! By the way despite what he said he is still an awesome guitarist!

  • @Mflyingspacemonkey I've got a £500 Epiphone Les Paul Custom and a £1,800 Gibson Les Paul and I love my Epiphone just as much and I play it as much as my Gibson.

  • I like the way the epiphone sounds.

  • "This guitar is mostly for kids"- psh...

  • I see him in march live :D in germany sorry for my bad english

  • When you get a Gibson you pay more for the brand than the quality.

  • @brunofreireguitar You've clearly never owned a Gibson...

  • My prefers epiphone, though I once owned a Gibson lp custom. I hotrod them with better electronics and sometimes tuners to get them where I want them, but I think epis are great guitars, esp for the price.

  • Maybe you can see Joe test ANY guitar in the world, but without his red Jazz III Signature pick, he will be in trouble. That was one of the first things that I looked in this video. But in the other hand, his style of playing is uinque, and the sound of this guitars is not from this Earth. What I would give to have one of these babies in my hands...

  • He sounds a bit patronizing when he is talking about the two lower priced guitars.

  • There's not much I wouldn't give up to have that kind of talent.

  • his voice at the start off the video sounded like john c reily

  • at first i didnt see it was joe, and i said to myself "wow this guy is great"

  • the first one he talks about is hanging up at his fathers guitar shop in New Hartford NY really cool!

  • You see dickhead I do research befor I open my mouth asshole maybe you should start doing the same.

  • Carth the only stupid bastard and retard here is you! Ass wipe!

  • Epiphone was in the united states for over 75 years before moving over sea's in 1976. Today Epiphone has been a American guitar company now over 110 years. The majority of Epiphones workforce are all from the USA. From Top management to master luthiers. The Chinese workforce at Epiphone is only 15%. Today Epiphone is once again a top guitar company. I personally prefer certain Epiphone Sg models over Gibson.

  • @EPI6fingers

Not only are you a fucking idiot, but you are also a liar. That is absolutely ludicrous and if you truly believe that then I feel sorry for you.

  • i found the epiphone model in a local pawn shop i saw the price bargained i bit (the dude seemed desperate for money)and bought it for $100!!!!! w/ the warranty sticker, that plastic protector you see on new phones and not a scratch on it the guy didnt know what he had in front of him

  • Since top luthier Michael Voltzs left Gibson and joined Epiphone in 2001 his main goal was to make Epiphone once again a great guitar company. Today he has done that and more. Most of today's Epiphones are of The top professional quality and Gibsons every equal and better. And it's All because of Mike Voltzs. So again I say thank your Michael Voltzs for making Epiphone once again a great guitar company!

  • after trying out two of the epi JB LP's and returning both, finding them to be woefully challenged on workmanship, fit, form and finish - I picked up a JB studio.... its beautiful - form meets function! don't waste U'r time on the epi. Thanks gibson, thanks JB!

  • i gotta get that studio but its never in the shopzzz gnarrr!!!!!!

  • @BIRDINTHEHOUZE word is that gibson will ship a new batch to retailers sometime in march 2012...

  • The epiphone sounds lame when compared to the others.

  • @blogtvpunk Its just the pickups. Thats it to be honest. Change the pickups and it will sound the same.

  • @Snakelings

To bad they all have the same USA Burstbuckers in them even the Epiphone. So you might wanna tell us what pickups should go in the Epiphone so that they would sound the same.

  • @Zhaggysfaction

Its not the pickups dummy, its the quality of the wood that makes a guitar sound great! Thats why Gibson (literally) OWNS Epiphone ;)

  • @ESPsandEmgs

You might want to learn what sarcasm means. "blogtvpunk" said: Epiphone sounds lame. To which "Snakelings" said: It's just the pickups. Change the pickups and it will sound the same. To which I said: They all have the SAME pickups. There must be then a super pickup that'll make Epiphone sound like Gibson. There isn't because Gibsons are better, woods, hardware, craftsmanship. You don't have to tell me.

  • @Zhaggysfaction

Yea my bad bro :D I realized I had clicked reply on YOUR comment and not @Snaklings after it was already sent. I have been waiting for your angry reply LOL. But it was too late, it had already been posted.

  • @ESPsandEmgs

Don't worry about it, we're all good. At least you admitted your mistake.

  • @Zhaggysfaction

Yea, I guess I could have rolled with it and argued that Epiphone was equal to Gibson, but I'm not a dipshit, so it never would have worked.

  • @Zhaggysfaction Actually you don't know what the FUCK YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! Time and time again people have tested this "theory" in a studio with only the wood as a variable. People repeatedly FAIL to distinguish between woods. It is all SUGGESTION! If you want to and are primed to hear something, then you will hear it. The pickups are the most important thing! Bridge, nut, tuners, and strings less so. Wood makes a MAJOR difference in ACOUSTIC guitars but, not in electrics!

  • @Zhaggysfaction The difference you mention between Gibson and Epiphone has to do with the playability and NOT the sound. I have an Agile AL-3000, Korean-made LP copy, that cost me 640 $ after having the pickups replaced and, it smokes any of the Gibson LP Standards I have played. I have a Gibson LP Studio Faded that I got for 650, they're like 800 new, and it is a very good guitar. I just wouldn't pay Gibson an extra 1,500 $ for a maple cap and some paint!

  • @bbnatedogg

You might want to take the sand out of your pussy and calm the fuck down. So you're saying that a 700$ Epiphone sounds better tha a 4000$ custom shop les paul. And you might actually want to learn to read and read what we were discussing here. One said that he thinks the epiphone sounds lame yet it has tha same exact pickups as the CS Gibson so why don't they (all 3) sounds the same then if it's just the pickups. And yes the differences are in playability...

  • @bbnatedogg

Which comes with better woods and craftsmanship. And usually along comes better tone also. If you don't like Gibsons, fine. But if you think that pickups are THE MOST IMPORTANT THING then you're so far from the truth.

  • @Zhaggysfaction You are RETARDED! Joe even SAYS in the video it is NOT A SCIENTIFIC comparison as they are set up differently. The pickups being at different heights would affect the sound of the different guitars. Also, no two sets of pickups are EXACTLY alike. I never said that the Epiphone sounded better! Learn to FUCKING READ! I don't think it really sounded worse OR much different. If you think that every custom shop guitar sounds better than any guitar that is cheaper

  • @Zhaggysfaction then you are truly stupid. You can believe what you want. I'll believe actual science and my ears. Go ahead and pay thousands of extra dollars for a maple cap and some paint! It's idiots like you that allows Gibson to jack up the price on their guitars in the first place. I'm willing to pay extra for a guitar built in the US to someone earning a living wage but, I'm not going to throw away extra thousands of dollars for some bullshit markup!

  • @Zhaggysfaction I can buy a guitar from Warmoth, US built, that will FUCKING SMOKE anything that comes out of the Gibson custom shop for less than 1,500 $. The wood is the LEAST important factor in the tone of an ELECTRIC guitar! This is BACKED UP by SCIENTIFIC research. All your belief is backed up by is a bunch of other idiots that circulate the same fallacy and guitar companies that ENCOURAGE this BULLSHIT so they can charge you extra!

  • @bbnatedogg

Oh now you're calling me an idiot and retarded. Learn some manners. Listen to yourself. If you insist on confirming everything with science. Why then two Exactly same guitars build and set up exaclty same with same sounding pups and yet the two guitars can sound very different. Hmm what could it be? And if you can't hear the difference between the epiphone and the others you should meet your doctor. Why don't we all just change to Warmoth then if it's so easy.

  • @bbnatedogg

And if you think that something being made in th US makes it holy and automatically better then, oh boy you are far from the truth. I can get you dozens of guitars built here and they will smoke every guitar that has every been made in the US.

  • @Zhaggysfaction Your answer, two guitars that have identical specs in every way do NOT SOUND VERY DIFFERENT! Unless you mean when TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE play them! I could play a crappy guitar and it would sound pretty good and, you could be playing an all original 1959 LP and you would still SOUND LIKE SHIT! And I never said that guitars have to be made in the US to be good! I just meant that I am willing to pay some extra for a guitar not built by slave labor in China!

  • @bbnatedogg And if they do sound very different when played by the same person then, it is because YOU EXPECT THEM TO! As I said before, it's called SUGGESTION! Real a fucking book about human psychology!

  • @bbnatedogg

Your starting to make this personal saying I sound like shit. Where are your videos proving you're such a phenomenal player you say you are?

  • @Zhaggysfaction You mad bro? I was just trying to make a point. I had never seen you play guitar. You're pretty good actually, not my cup of tea really but pretty good. And my videos are up your mum's twat! The POINT was that TWO DIFFERENT players playing the SAME GUITAR will sound different. But whatever.I'm done trying to talk some sense into you. If you wanna believe that paying 5,000 $ plus for a LP is worth it then, knock your fucking self out. Gibson thrives on people like u

  • @bbnatedogg

Actuallu I saw your videos in your mothers twat last night. That was just for bringing my mother into this. That was just pathetic man. And you trying to talk some sense to me stopped working when the first thing you said to me was I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about in capital letters. There must be many of us then because Gibson is where it is. I did not say two different players.

  • @bbnatedog

If you would have started with a little more tolerant tone we would have gotten an intellectual conversation here and either or both of us had learned somthing but you just had to start with the word fuck and it was ruined. So there you go, happy now?

  • @blogtvpunk it IS lame when compared to the others

  • @blogtvpunk maybe thats why a Gibson costs thousands of dollars more

  • I've played the JB Studio. The neck's a bit too thick for me personally, but it sounds amazing.

  • el que es gallo donde quiera canta... pinche maestro

  • And so, the Studio JB is in my possession. It's an amazing guitar, and a big thank you goes out to Joe and Gibson for making this available for us, mortals. I love the sound, and the feel of this guitar. I think I finally found what I 've been looking for!

  • God, he sounds like Eric Johnson!

  • Well Joe, I'm not a kid, but I'm not going to spend 4000 bucks on a guitar. So I ordered the LP JB Studio version. Can't wait till it arrivers!

  • I have his Gibson. Absolutely amazing instrument!! It's butter smooth and plays like a dream

  • i like gold tops without the silver covers

  • He says about the Epiphone... "guitar for kids". I'll take the Gibson thanks!

  • Thank you Joe

  • He's so humble and self-effacing. "Take them out, beat them up, put scratches on them..." Amen.

  • I love this video because it proves that Epiphones are almost or even as good as some gibsons.

  • Or he just makes them look good.

  • who would've thought joe?

with playing like that, who wouldn't have thought! You super star!

  • The custom shop guitar sounds very thick. The other two guitars sound thinner. I prefer thicker Les Paul tones, not everyone does though.

  • YES!!!! My Epiphone Joe Bonamassa goldtop has arrived! What a beauty!

  • one of the best guitarists ever!

  • I'm receiving my own Epiphone JB this week. Can't wait!

  • Joe is a humble guy and he is really good playing guitar. An epi is not as good as gibson but is still a good guitar, I mean is not "home made" or something like that. The price on the other hand can make the difference but look at this in the way that "its better to own an epi than to dream of a Gibson and don't actually have it"

  • to say an Epi is a guitar for kids is kind of insulting.

  • @Malikon13 I think he said this because he use to play his Dads Les Paul as a kid.

  • @Sportsterfan68 maybe, idk. Not all of us can afford $2,500. Gibsons these days. : ( My Epi makes me a living though and pays the bills, so I love it. Maybe I'm just defense of it.

  • @Malikon13 I understand...The JB Gibson Studio LP Goldtop costs $1430. I know price can be a huge factor when buying a guitar.I'm sure your Epiphone is great.

I perfer to buy USA made products when possible. Rock On!

  • @Sportsterfan68 I would prefer to as well, but I play for a living so I'm usually lucky if I make rent, lol. It'd take years to save up thousands for a guitar. They're just tools, they don't know where they come from. Wood and strings is wood and strings to me.

  • funny thing... the cheapest one has the richest sound :)

  • Comment removed

  • Can't even wait to get mine...

  • Am I the only one thinking his playing and sound is close from Eric Johnson's???

  • @parroun no you are not he def has the "EJ" vibe and many comment on his videos about that very thang.

  • @MOSKII58 Thank you :)

  • Keep practicing Joe, and we might let you play in our band (if your dad's got a van)

  • Joe is awesome.

  • anyone noticed the epiphone strings arent rapped around :s

  • i would have thought xD , freaking best guitarist @ the moment should have more then 3 signature guitars XD !!!!!!!

  • I admire Joe.... but I don´t think in guitars for kids... jack white plays a plastic eastwod from the 50´s and the first time I´ve listende to dead leaes and the dirty ground it really hitted me like a bomb

  • Dammit!!! Lost my pizza slice watching this =P

  • Got my les paul studio bonamassa today and its just great.Dont feel like any studio i ever played before.Sounds killer and plays great.....It is a bit on the heavy side but that i like with my les paul so i see that as a bonus:)

If you are thinking of buying one,do it now before its to late.......

  • "This (Epiphone) is mostly a guitar for kids."

No Joe, you really don't sound like a kid when you play it.

  • I swear I will jam with Joe one day. You readin' this Joe? You're my main inspiration, dude. It'd be an honor to play some blues with you.

  • Joe seems like such a nice, humble guy. Really nice to see that he's still down to earth while also supremely talented!

  • @jemdave13 no I dont think he is humble.

  • What amp was he using here?

  • I just got my signature Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio today and all I can say is that this is a really nice guitar. I have owned many Gibson guitars including a Studio and this one is every bit as nice as the rest. The reason Joe Bonamassa is so popular with Guitarist magazine is that he is just as good as Eric Clapton or Stevie Ray. He seems to be a very down to Earth guy and a hard working musician. I know some people will disagree with me in my comparisons but that is a matter of opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • if you want to hide the weak points of a guitars sound, you add reverb!

  • @MrCountyJoe rubbish

  • @MrCountyJoe

so you're saying nearly all recorded guitar tracks are weak?

    fool.

  • @infinityjet

so you're saying nearly all recorded guitar tracks have that much reverb as the one of this jb studio?

    fool.

  • @MrCountyJoe

it makes no difference whatsoever...do you play guitar?

  • "This is more or so a guitar for kids"

Great selling point on the Epiphone Joe haha. Either way all three guitars sound great.

  • I have an epiphone les paul and my friend has a 1980's custom but i cant tell the difference when we use the same amp.

Who knows maybe it's not gibson we should thank but marshal amps for all the awsome guitarists like slash thats played in the 1980's-1990's.

No offence to gibson i love gibsons :D

  • i bought the new issue of guitarist with these guitars in thinking there would be more of these vids on the disk and there wasn't any at all not even this one! how come?

  • All guitars sound great but there defintley is a difference between the Gibson and Epiphone the Epi sounds a bit darker with more mids while the Gibson has a brighter singing top end with lots of clarity all guitars are worth the money though :)

  • WOW, dude, these guitars have SERIOUSLY LOW action. I love that, I'm trying to get something like that on my strat...plays as easy as keyboards :D

  • I love the way in Joe's hands they all sound awesome!

    $1000 to $4000 ??

    90% in the hands!!!

  • @chooseyourblues 100% true! You can give a good player a $100 china made guitar and they will make it sound great and you can give a beginner a $5000 guitar and it will sound like crap. NO disrespect to beginners but you get the point.

  • thumbs up for todays google .. guitar...

  • I can't help myself, but Joe doesn't seem quite comfy when talking about the affordable Gibson guitar. Is he fibbing?

Anyhow, nice looking and good sounding guitars!

  • A true inspiration to me, your average kid. And he achieved his goal of getting his guitars into the hands of kids, because I'm lucky enough to own the gibby and epi version.

  • seems like an awesome guy :)

  • Amazing! so kind of them =) Now gotta get me one! :D maybe one of each someday <3

  • Outstanding! So good to see that Joe is dedicated to getting his sig guitars into the hands of regular players and kids, rather than just collectors. He is a genuine nice guy. I'll bet we will be seeing a sig line of his '59 burst reissues from Gibson in the not too distant future...

  • I wish Gibson would do gold-top studios regularly.

  • @van1980 They do make the Studio ’60s Tribute as a Goldtop, van - it's quite a beauty, and you can read a full review of it and the Bonamassa Epi LP in issue 343 of Guitarist!

  • @GuitaristMag

What amp was he plugged into here?

    Thanks!:)

  • @infinityjet He was plugged into a fantastic Lazy J Model 80 combo from UK-based boutique amp maker Jesse Hoff. He used the amp's VAC attenuator to keep the volume down but other than that there were no pedals - it just went straight into the amp.

  • They all sound very similar - just proves it's more the player than the axe! I bet if they were all set up identically, the differences would be even smaller. I thought the licks seemed a little more "forced" on the Epi, probably meaning it isn't as easy to play as the other two. (I still wouldn't say no to one as a gift, tho'!) Interesting!

  • Legendary!

  • Good stuff...Joe B is a great player and cool to see how happy he is being honored w sig guitars. The guitars,in this clip, sound overall great with the historic having that extra voodoo. It has,at least for me,that explosive attack followed by some bloom.

  • Hi i'm Joe Bonamassa and i have 3 of the same guitars, now watch me play typical blues. who would have thought?

  • I'm watching this because I have a thing for Goldtop LPs, but for god's sake why does Guitarist magazine have such a huge raging hard-on for Joe Bonamassa? I don't get it. There have been some great features recently like the James Dean Bradfield interview, but too much of this guy.

  • @PantheonLincoln I've noticed Guitarist magazines recent obsession as well...I believe its because Joe has brought blues back to the forefront of the music industry which hasn't been done since SRV...but also its not just any blues its "British" blues and Guitarist magazine is UK based so I can definitely understand there new found love over Joe...I'm definitely obsessed with him XD

  • @AnotherKindOfBlue4 "british blues"? joe's from america. born in n.y. and a huge srv and jimi fan.

  • @dallascoug but his biggest influences are from the British Blues scene such as Clapton, Gary Moore, and Paul Koscoff. Sure he likes SRV, Hendrix, Billy Gibbons and Eric Johnson who doesn't? But he himself has stated numerous times that he is trying to bring back the "British" Blues and he IS a huge reason Kids nowadays are listening to the 60's British Scene. The English guys played heavier blues with Les Pauls and Marshall Stacks while in America guys were playing Strats and had Cleaner tones.

  • @AnotherKindOfBlue4

Agree, he sounded so much different and "NOT as pop" as John Mayer. To me, John Mayer is not so much of being a blues guy like him.

  • Strange comment at 2.12 - 'this one's actually good one'. That mean there are some bad ones???!!!

  • A hand made prototype is bound to be a better guitar than a prodution line instrument .. really cool for him to do this though.

  • amazing interview!

  • awesome video :)
