how did u set the amp and the distortion? i used a behringer OD300 but my sound is DIRTY! the dirty sound depends by my pedal or by the amp or equalizer settings (hig-medium-low) ?
@Waiting7up I don't use distortion pedals. The overdrive is done entirely by the TriAxis preamp. That's definitely necessary to get a huge metal sound like this one. Unless you're Joe Satriani and you want to base your entire sound on pedals, hey go for it. I just don't think you're likely to find that huge tube-overdriven metal sound like this in a pedal. If you like this kind of sound, look into MESA/Boogie gear.
I think your playing of Orion is the most technically executed on all of you tube.
Incredible....I hope you make mega bucksin your own band. Many thanks and keep shredding and posting such informative tutorials that make metalheads happy! You are SICK!

fail ... you play it wrong ... the flow of the rythm is different then your play and the main riff is played with single down strokes between the cords, you play chord:single stroke:chord not chord:double hit:chord
Do you mean the B minor descending riff right before the bass interlude? In EADG order, the chords are: -244, -243, -242, -044, -043, -042, 244-, 243-, 242-, 022-
first fret low E. I can't get the rhythm down for that section as it is on the CD. if you listen to the mp3 it starts at roughly 2:11 and goes onto roughly 2:42. I don't know if I'm wrong or right or whatever but if you can PM me or even post a reply here on exactly how you play that part I'm having so much trouble with it. I prefer playing rhythm tbh (not that I'm not good at lead) I just always thought it was cool. anyway if you can reply that would be cool you rock dude awesome video \m/
It's sort of a "gallop" riff. It's a 16th 16th 8th pattern that fits in a quarter note. You play 16th 16th 8th on the open E then 16th 16th 8th on the 1st fret and back down again. To practice it, play the rhythm with four 16th notes and work on not playing the last 16th note per each quarter note. I can't think of any other way to explain it in text.
thanks and one last question (sorry lol). at 5:00 on your video what exactly are you doing? I know you told me previous you like to add 5ths but I'm not so great on music theory etc. Umm I know it's oto much too ask maybe could you explain the chords here? and also at exactly 5:53 in the video. that little gallop thing. It looks nothing like how I do it. I can't make out what the chords are. the rhythm on the second part is different each rotation. it's just reall difficult( for me)
Sure. I play a 022 then 133 and back to 022, partial muting the low E string. Adding a 5th is also known as a power chord. For the low 3 strings, adding a 5th is as easy as taking the root note of the chord (in this case 0 or open), moving down a string, add 2 frets to the right, and playing that note simultaneously with the root note. Examples are 02, 13, 24, 35, 46, 57, 68, 79, etc. You already know how to play them for sure, but probably didn't know they were called 5ths. Sorry about that :).
thanks but it looks like your doing 022, 133, then 244. I know I'm being rly annoying but I rly wanna learn it. maybe if you have msn or aim or anything I could talk to you about it there?
hey dude great video I'm learning the rhythm parts of this song. Now I'm stuck on one part which is the section after the bass solo. like 4 muted low Es, A, 4 muted low Es, E, then 4 muted low Es, then the C chord. then the bit after like the chuggin on the low E. on all tabs it says like this 00000001110000 then back to previous (but chords reversed)
basically the part you're showing starting at 4:18
I see your playing chords there on the tab it says to mute the open low e and first fret...
oh cool I can't really make out on the video what exactly your playing could you tell me? and also I can't get the rhythm down like is the tab wrong or what? I've been rewining that song back about a million times I can't get that little section down from 2:11 to 2:42 in the song itself. any help would be greatly appreciated :D
It would be A-B-C if anything (not B#), and the B would be misleading if it was written as 0224 (which is an E5 with an extra 5th on top) rather than -244 (which is a B5). The actual chords are A-E-C and that's from the official transcription book of the album. Hope that helps!
This is the best orion lesson on you tube by far...Extremly accureit notes and chords!!! Do you have any other lessons??? You are the man!! (sorry about the spelling, I am from Ohio) LOL
Rhythms are probably the most tricky thing in music so I can sympathize. Start up a metronome at a slow pace and practice it note by note and keep repeating it til you can play it with your eyes closed.
Haha, well 'he' is me. I'm more or less telling you the frets and strings. You gotta do a little of the work yourself if I don't tell you exactly what's going on. Use your ear and trial/error! If that's too much then go buy the official transcription book for $20 or so from your nearest music shop.
I saw you did a cover of this already, but if you could do another with the setup you have here it would be great, because it sounds so much better on this vid.
Standard E tuning. I don't know what the settings were for this recording. Not drastically different from any other video really :). Do you own a Triaxis? LD2 Yellow mode will generally get you in the ball park. I am constantly tweaking my settings. I haven't found anyone else's setting numbers to be satisfactory to me, ever.
Tube amp and a Line 6 Uber Metal, if you spend the time you can recreate any Metallica tone very very closely to the records. Have to flatten out your amp EQ though and relay play around with the pedal. Of course it all depends on the amp, it's a very versatile pedal but it sounds like crap with some amps.
How do you get a good muted sound? Everytime I use palm muting I can't seem to get a good clean heavy muted sound, usually it just comes out kind of, well I don't really know how to explain it but it's not really that good clean heavy muted sound that I want to get.
Nice buy! I love this guitar. Actually now that I've got my old Epiphone Les Paul loaded with DiMarzio pickups and rewired for one vol/one tone 3-way switch, I love it even more!
If you want to kill all your tone, go with EMGs. I suppose they're best for really hard-rocking metal sounds. I prefer the tighter sound from mid- to high-output pickups like DiMarzios; you get more control over the tone and they're much better for lead playing.
