This opening always made me think some world-class motion picture was about to appear on my screen. This music always sounds like you have to watch or else.
You are correct: the current Chris IS a doctor (pediatrician). The Chris who retired from his law practice in 1978 was his grandfather who was married to Nancy (before she married Dan McClosky after the elder Chris passed on).. Their youngest child Bob is Dr. Chris' father by his wife Kim.
@Sheri451 You're talking about Dan McCullough(the guy announcing in this 1978 episode)right? He was later replaced by Dan Region and some new music in 1982!
Hey Greg your post brought back great memories. My mother and grandmothers would say "it's almost time for Lisa", everything would STOP from 130-2, they would not answer the phone and if they did the person was told "why are you calling me during my story"? My grandmothers HATED Lisa but watched her every single day, and would talk about her like she was a real person. I had the chance to tell Eileen Fulton this once after her cabaret show and she roared with laughter.

Seeing this make me feel like I am sitting in my grandparent's farm house as a young teenager again. Those really were "the days" although you couldn't have convinced us then. :)
@hazyeyes44 First Guiding Light, and now As The World Turns. Why are the networks throwing in the towel when it comes to soap operas in favor for more local programming, informercials, local newscasts, the whole kit in kaboodle.
At least ABC's still airing their soaps *GH, AMC, etc.) and NBC only have Days of Our Lives as their sole soap.
Seeing the ad for Duncan Hines makes me hungry. Duncan Hines over Betty Crocker anyday, they're more creative and more marketable with their products. If you wanna save soaps, then it's time to dump our financial system that's consumer driven, and go back to a more physical economy where everyone will have a job again, by rebuilding our infrastructure, cities, transportations, nuclear power, and our educational system. And damn good wages would enable husbands to carry the entire family.
@LaurenLover81 and your taking like a Marxist. Change is a way of life and Marxism will not nesscary save your favorate shows. The young people are tried of these old horces.
@donmccullen They're not watching them enough to be tired of them. And they sure as hell aren't going to get a sense of history and character development from Snooki or the Real Housewives.
@Oakdalian They don't CARE!!! If they did they would have watched ATWT and it would stil be on. The young people CONNECT with Jersey Shore and Real Housewives.
Heck the older crowd back in 1973 did not care for "The Young and the Restless," and that was a scripted daytime drama. Eventually the other daytime drams got the memo and made changes. Biggest one DITCH THE ORGAN!!!!
@LaurenLover81 Hi Laren - I'm with you 100 percent regarding Duncan Hines. I'm a scratch baker, but if I had to use boxed cake mix, it would always be Duncan Hines. My mom made the best desserts our family ever had using DH -- including Sock-It-To-Me Cake and her wonderful pineapple and cherry cheesecakes, in which the cake mix was used to make the crust. How's that sound with a good cup of coffee?
All of the P&G soaps bring back these great memories. I will truly miss them all.
Must have been from the middle break, because at the opening, the announcer usually said, "And now for the next thirty minutes/full hour... 'As the World Turns.'"
No "rnigna"-the announcer shorten his speech to just "As the World Turns" in 1978. From 1969 to 1975, the announcer says: "And now presented live for the next thirty minutes-'As the World Turns'".
I would guess approximately 1975 or 1976, because "Moist 'N Easy" cake mixes came out as P & G's version of Betty Crocker's "Stir and Frost," which were launched in 1974.
I don't know why...but I could listen to this theme, along with EON, every day. It's superior "I've arrived" sound somehow manages to pick me up if I'm feeling blue. Soaps were serious about their daytime dramas back then. Thanks for posting...
Okay, pause at 0:17, there are three boxes of Duncan Hines. At 0:22, there are two bottles of Head and Shoulders. What year are those opening credits from?

My mother loved As the world turns,
She would not answer the phone or the door when it was on.
She was a devoted fan of the show.
I just had to add this because it always made me laugh.
If anyone talked during the show. She'd say SHHH!! I'm trying to help these people.
MY mother would say that to be funny. but, She really didn't want to be interrupted when watcing As the world turns.
It's so sad now that they are going to end the show for good now.
Greg.
