Demming & others have tried to make us,USA,a quality & leader in more than just manufacturing-in all elements of business.Yes, it is a futile efforts when our society elects idiots like Obama & literally ruins businesses, transforms industries for the worse, & eliminates the incentives for success. Thx to all great thinkers that have tried to make us,USA, successful but until Americans can see past fools & foolish promises from idiots like Obama,we will never succeed as we have the capability.

Check out The underlying law of nature. Bing or Google it. Discovered relatively recently, it is possibly the world's most useful knowledge. One of countless reasons–its understanding and application is the most effective and efficient means of improving the performance of any process.
I weep for you Dr. Deming, I deeply sympathize. My company failed the TQM hurricane test in 2009. Management was 80 percent ineffectual at engaging the worker. Our G.M. was known for regarding the producers as 'Only good as your last F-up'.
The owners mostly stood by and let the sales office jackals ruin things further by meddling in the problem solving process, largely ignoring process improvements at every suggestion.
Current Ford CEO Alan Mulally can be considered a successor of Deming as is evident from his successful management years at Boeing and at Ford thus far; the only major U.S. automotive company to not need bailout funds and who's public image and relative sales are constantly improving.
The very best managers always seem to have engineering backgrounds strangely enough, good for me though being a EE major and all.
@PrinceNoctisCaelum That attitude going in will get you nowhere though. I've seen many potentially good engineers fail flat-out due to ego. Lose it. Enter the workforce with humility and you will succeed.
You fail to name the long list of right wing idiots.... convenient!
Also, Management is the problem. All these hot-shot CEO's that have thumbed their noses at Deming over the years because THEY want to be the star who shows a big short term profit - then slither on to another company for more pay, while the company they left suffers at their mistakes!
There certainly there are others, just listed some of the obvious relative to the bank issue and certainly toyotas deviation and troubles , 500 word min.prohibits a full list

@vfullmer Sorry, but that's really an over the top stretch to bring Obama into the conversation. Let's start with Ronald Wilson Reagan who was the biggest promoter of corporate greed in our times. The problem is at the top of the corporate culture which is all about making money for the top people/investors and then leaving for the next group to screw over. Read a book on Deming and the 14 Points and learn.
@murphicus I agree...transformation definitely has to start at the top. To whom does the organization answer (usually whoever is paying for its operation) and what do they reward? I've had recent experience with a manager who tried to do the right things right but was crushed by a boss who has done a number of things to hurt the organization, often in direct opposition to the organization's purpose. Why is this boss still there? Simple: because he brings in revenue, so the cost is ignored.
@TavernacleRecords I honestly think this republic has no one to blame but itself. Dr. Deming told this nation to get its act together, and unfortunately, his teachings fell upon deaf ears. Its actually pretty pathetic that all this nation had to do was listen to 2 guys(Deming and Juran), and we could've stayed the manufacturing powerhouse that we once were. I'm actually so ashamed of my nations nowadays that I actually list my nationality and "stateless". That is how much I hate my nation.
LOL Obama has nothing to do with this....global warming is obama's fault too (sarcasm) ....dont put your dignity in jeopardy by making a comment like this
I did not realize this guy was a distant relative of mine, until long after I heard of him. We descended from Wethersfield, Connecticut Puritans. I descended from John Deming and his wife, Honor Treat. It's a small world.
Not a big surprise that Ford was the only American car company that worked to follow Deming's methods - and now they have the highest quality of American cars, and in the latest consumer reports - some of their models out did Toyota & Honda...
Also, Ford is in the best financial shape of all the American car companies.
In the video response above from "The Fog of War" Robert S. McNamara talks about how when he started working at Ford, they did not even use an accounting department - they weighed a sample of their bills, then put a dollar amount per pound of bills...
i worked for FORD NZ from 2000-2002 then they sold the factory to a company that went under, the factory closed i lost my job and to this day i still say ford were the best company i worked for
Back in 1999, I ran into Alan Mulally at a shopping center here in Seattle. He was president of Boeing Commercial Airplanes at the time. I'd seen a show on PBS about the Boeing 777 project, which he was the leader of. He was really an impressive man to talk to. I even brought up W Edwards Deming! *L*
It's interesting too that Donald Petersen (in this video, the Ford CEO at the time) is from Seattle & there is a room in our Allen Library (named for Paul Allen's dad!) that Petersen donated.
Thanks for posting this. You wouldn't happen to have a video of the Red Bead Experiment handy, though, would you? I know some folks who might benefit from seeing it....
Thank you very much for posting this. I've seen "If Japan Can Why Can't We" (Clare Crawford-Mason's NBC report), but never saw this wonderful BBC (I presume) documentary.
